Trouble loading Facebook

Postby Nubsy » Wed May 30, 2012 10:10 pm UTC

Hi everyone!

All of a sudden the other day, I was unable to load Facebook. I assume there may be other sites, but FB is the only one I've run into. I ran down the normal list of fixes. Cleared cache, tried different browser, re-cycled the wifi, I even flushed the DNS cache. Nothing. I've tried on my mom's laptop on the same network, and it works there. My computer works on different networks, but not at home.

I'm running Arch Linux; 'Linux matt-laptop 3.3.7-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue May 22 00:26:26 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux'. I've tried Chromium, Firefox and Epiphany. The only way I can get it to do anything is if I delete the cookies relating to Facebook. Then the page loads, I log in, but the news stream is somewhat useless. Expanding comments doesn't work, if I scroll down, no more stories load, if I click on a link, they don't load either.

This is kind of frustrating, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the help!

What does "unable to load" mean? Do you get an error? A blank page? A different page?

It just never loads. Eventually Chromium gives me the 'No Data Sent' error:

No data received
Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this webpage later.
Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.

This is after trying to load for about a minute+.

Take a look in your hosts file (I think it's usually /etc/hosts on Linux) and see if there is anything strange. This sounds suspiciously like you're being redirected to something. You say your computer (the one with the problem) works on other networks, and that other computers on your network work. To me, that implies that there is some sort of redirect happening on your machine but not when you're on your own network. Maybe your ISP is blocking the server that you're being redirected to (because it's a known evil site) whereas the other networks you're using do not.

Check hosts, run a Malware scan.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to change your FB password, using a different machine. Also, if you're not already using it, FB has a feature (Account Settings, Security, Recognized Devices) where you can see what devices are/have logged into your account. Remove any you don't recognize. They also have a feature that sends a text message to you whenever some new device tries to connect to your FB account, and you have to give it permission via a code in the text message before it allows the connection. This is a good feature.

Nothing out of place in the host files. I didn't get a chance to do a malware check, however, it seems to be working somewhat again. FB is slow to load, but it does seem to be working again. We'll see how that goes, though. Thanks for the help. :)

I don't like bumping threads, but this was already posted and I'm experiencing the same problems. Running Windows 7 here. Can't say for sure when the problem started. At first I thought it was just a problem with my browser (Firefox), but tried Chrome and same problem. It would just say it was connecting and never actually go to the webpage. If I went to facebook.com I couldn't connect but strangely, I could go to es-la.facebook.com, but sometimes it was the other way around. I can as of this post access es-es.facebook.com

I figured after a while that maybe it was a virus or malware, so I tried Spybot, Malwarebytes; MSE I use all the time and didn't pick up anything. The weird part is that yesterday when I was running Spybot and Malwarebytes (this latter one I'm not too sure of), I could access the pages just fine, both on Google and Firefox. I did some reading online and saw the virus Vundo thrown around a fair bit, but most of those results were from 2-3 years ago I looked it up on Wikipedia and aside from not being able to connect to FB, I don't have any of the symptoms. Also, as far as I can tell, FB is the only webpage that I have trouble accessing.

I barely use FB so it's not like I'll go insane without it, but I hate the thought of having malware on my comp that I can't do anything about.

*EDIT* Running Windows Malicious Software Removal now and hasn't picked up anything either.

*EDIT2*Seems to be solved. Changed my TCP/IPv4's DNS to Google's. Anyone one from the future who might see this, just change it to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4.

I think Facebook's servers were just acting up a little bit recently.

Well, it works, but sometimes it's pretty slow. Loads slower than the other pages.
