gnome-terminal replacement with transparency

Postby Arancaytar » Sun Jun 23, 2013 2:23 pm UTC

Apparently gnome-terminal has dropped transparent backgrounds from its features in some recent version. Does anyone know of a terminal emulator that still supports it? (Real transparency, not just copying the desktop background.)

Really? Dropped entirely? It seems very odd they would dispose of such a useful feature. Isn't transparency still available via Compiz?

Anyway, how do you feel about Tilda and Yakuake and the like?

It seems unlikely that gnome-terminal would drop this feature. Check your graphics driver to make sure you've got a good one for whatever card you have, and check your window manager to be sure compositing is enabled.

They really did drop the feature. It's only as of Gnome 3.8, which hasn't hit the regular Ubuntu or Fedora releases yet, but there are folks complaining and filing bug reports, and it's mentioned on the Wikipedia page.

I don't think of transparency as a usability feature, and I'm guessing that Gnome don't, either, but removing it seems like an odd and yet entirely predictable move. Apparently it's just yet another feature that failed to meet Gnome's increasingly high standards to justify inclusion. I hear Caribou is going to drop the Z and Q keys.

There's always MATE, which is a GNOME 2 fork, complete with terminal. I'm not sure how much of it you need to install if you just want MATE Terminal, though.

Konsole still supports transparent background colors, and it seems more similar to Gnome Terminal than most of the other alternatives.
