Windows 8 could not detect this networks proxy settings.

Postby Whelan » Sat Feb 08, 2014 1:55 pm UTC

Sony vaio running win 8.1. The system tray icon on hover says "Not connected - no connections available"
Running the troubleshooter returns "Windows could not detect this network's proxy settings"

"netsh winsock reset" and "netsh int ipv4 reset" both failed to help.

On a perhaps related note, (As in it started at the exact same time) I have no sound, and hovering over the volume system tray icon gives "the audio service is not running." But running the troubleshooter on that fixes it. I'm thinking it might be a driver issue?

Definitely sounds like a driver issue. Have you tried uninstalling the driver and then re-installing it?

Also, can you manually check the current IP settings for the connection?

I ended up fixing it by rolling back the system.

Be careful and watch driver updates in case it happens again. If a driver becomes corrupted because of a bad update and causes this, rolling back your system may cause it to reoccur if the driver attempts to update itself again using the same method. However, there's a 98% chance you've fixed your problem.
