My company blocked youtube

Postby Azrael » Thu Nov 08, 2007 9:14 pm UTC

My darling employers have blocked youtube, which is tedious. But I can get around that issue using a proxy server. However, when I do so I get the error message:

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

whenever I try to watch anything. I have Flash 9,0,47,0 installed, so I'm assuming there's a problem with Java -- it's not 'turned off' as best I can tell (firefox: tools-options-content and the enable java & javascript boxes are checked). But when I dig through my Java settings, I find things about proxy servers. But I have no idea what to do with them ... of even if those settings are contributing to the problem.

Feel like helping me procrastinate?

(using firefox 2.0.0.9, JRE 1.6.0_03)

Edit: Ignore what I previously said.

Edit 2: Have you tried reinstalling Adobe Flash? i remember my friend had a very similar issue, and just updating it fixed it.

Is this only for youtube when using that proxy?

*bad recollection of memory*

I'm trying really hard to remember the issue my friend had in comp science cause he was also using a proxy to go on youtube and got the same error.

Hm well, if I was in your shoes I would see if the problem is in firefox and use IE for a second. If the same problem occurs then at least you know more about the source problem. And with what oyu already tried I don't know enough about all the setting in Java to give any mroe advice.

I only remember updating Firefox and Flash for my friend and maybe even switching proxies and problem got solved.

try using a transparent proxy, non-transparent proxies usually block things like javascripts.

keep in mind though that a transparent proxy is not secure, if your company is monitoring your internet usage through their router, they will be able tot ell your visiting youtube (even though the software blocking youtube won't)

Some proxys tend to block flash/javascript. Find a more versatile one.

Otherwise, do some work? :)

Okay, find torpark and put it on flashdrive. It's an independant web-browser that will allow you to go to any site bypassing security. It will be slower than you are used to about 76kpbs downlad speed.

Are you using Vista?
For some reason firefox will not work with any flash on my vista install, but IE works fine.

Ah, that sounds reasonable...

Other things:

Vista: No, XP
Work: ... but ... but ... I don't wanna?

Aha, I have had this problem...

youtube can work fine with proxies. The problem with most proxies and youtube is that the address to the .fla doesn't go through the proxy. My friend modified a php proxy from sourceforge so to make youtube work. I'll see if I can track down the code and upload it somewhere.

Edit{ he deleted it, but remember - it can be done!

- look at the youtube javascript etc and try and determine the .fla address.
- upload your own .fla player in the same dir as the proxy
- extract the .fla address with regex or whatever
- proxyfy the .fla address then pass it to your own fla player
- replace youtube's fla player with regex.
- profit?
}
