Free database software?

Postby cleverdan » Sat Apr 05, 2008 11:53 pm UTC

Anyone know any good free software for making a concise database for XP? Or will it be hidden somewhere in my shitty outdated Office 2003 package?

Concise database? What are you talking about exactly?

The main free options are MySQL and postgres.

The office options are access (not in basic packages) and excel (many limitations).

MS Office 2003 was referred to by the OP. I have not tried using OO for such things.

Don't touch Office - Access is a horrible database program. I haven't ever used OOBase, but suspect it's similar. Learn a good database language like SQL. Others have already pointed to the major flavors - I'm relatively happy with mysql due to its extensive php integration, but MSSQL and Postgre sql are both nice.
(defun fibs (n &optional (a 1) (b 1)) (take n (unfold '+ a b)))

Open Office's database is no different from Access, which in all honesty, is an excellent application--it's not intended to replace MySQL or PostgreSQL. MSSQL is. Access is just a way to interface with a database, with a limited database engine of its own. It's for people who need to use a database, not make one.

Since this isn't a religious war, we probably shouldn't be saying how much one rocks/ licks taint; what are you trying to manage with your database? Some are likely better than others for your purposes.
