I haven't done it myself, but I've heard some very favorable reviews, so it's probably something that would be good to check out.

Strange that Wubi didn't work properly though... maybe try checking the CD for defects (boot from it, select "check CD for defects"), that might throw something up.
Did you have any previous linux installations beforehand? 8.04 wouldn't install for me simply because i had a previously existing swap partition.. bit crappy if you ask me..
