Python Shells Hate Me

Postby Jorpho » Fri Sep 05, 2008 8:41 pm UTC

What exactly would be a good interactive Python shell for Fedora Core 9?

IDLE seems to be out of date. Actually, it works sort of well, but whenever it tries to do tab completion, a blank window pops up and nothing else happens. I understand this has something to do with a compatibility issue between Python 2.5 and the old version of Tcl that IDLE uses. (It actually might be fixed in IDLE 1.2.2, but oddly enough I can't seem to find a package that includes 1.2.2 instead of 1.2.1.)

IPython (which I have to run from a console) always seems to hang after I try to run a few commands. The freezing does not seem to be particularly reproducible. Maybe there's a particular terminal emulator which is more compatible with it? I use the default GNOME terminal.

Pycrust crashes as soon as I try to run show() from Matplotlib.

This is nuts!

(Don't people still use interactive Python shells?)

IDLE running in a terminal window works well enough for me when I need one...

type 'python' (sans quotes)

Actually, not sure if it's technically IDLE, but it's basically the same from my perspective/needs.

I tried IDLE and it felt weird and behaved weird. I tried IPython in the default GNOME shell and it works great. I'm in Ubuntu though, which may explain why it doesn't hang for me.

So basically this comment doesn't help you at all.
