Opera and Tor

Postby Mach1ne » Wed Mar 04, 2009 4:11 am UTC

I installed Tor on one of my comptuers to check it out, and with firefox 3 i get a warning that suppose firefox 3 with tor leaks timezone and livemarks info via tor. Is this true? Secondly, can Tor work with Opera or Chrome?

I thought I had heard something about that being fixed with newer versions of TorButton, but it appears that that is not the case.

Tor can be used with any application that supports a SOCKS proxy by specifying that proxy manually in an options menu. Opera and Chrome (and any other at all recent web browser) will. However, web browsers do a whole lot of different things other than just fetching http/https documents--such as flash, javascript, etc., and those other things can leak information in unexpected ways. So really, I doubt you're going to be any better off, and very possibly you'll be even worse off since TorButton works to help prevent some of those other things from leaking information if it can.

You can fix this quite easily: turn off plugins in the browser you're using with Tor. If that's not enough, use a lightweight browser like Dillo that doesn't even support that sort of thing.
