Router problem

Postby Kurushimi » Sun Jun 21, 2009 9:31 pm UTC

Anyways, I installed Ubuntu on my computer. I'm trying to get on the internet with a wired cood going to my router. I set the IPv4 values to manual (as automatic wasn't working) and set the correct values. It says "Connection Established". Still, I cannot access the internet. I think the problem is my router not allowing Ubuntu to access the internet. What could cause something like this and how would I change it?

change the settings back to automatic, then check your ubuntu's network drivers (if you installed them, which you should've). try uninstalling/reinstalling them. if the internet connection works on that machine in another OS (like windows, if you're dual booting or something, or if it worked before ubuntu), then it's not a problem with the router most likely. The router just sends an internet connection to the network card in the computer. It's probably an ubuntu setting that's messed up somewhere.

Once you've changed the settings back to automatic check if the router is giving you TCP/IPv4 values, if you're not getting them then you'll have to do it manually.
Either way this leads onto a few questions,
Can you ping the router?
Can you ping other computers on the network (if there are any)?
What type of router are you using?
Are you able to resolve web addresses (from URL to IP)?

If all else fails re-install everything.

When I tried to ping the router last time, it didn't fail, it simply froze. Though, recently, sometimes when I try edit the router settings through the browser it simply doesn't open. Maybe these have similar causes.

I'm using a linksys wireless router. It has some wired connections in the back that I'm plugging in.

I'm not sure how to test the URL resolve thing but I'm pretty sure I can't since I can't ping any url I've tried.

Also, earlier I was trying to connect to the router wirelessly, however, the network manager on my Ubuntu installation is simply missing an "Enable Wireless" button. It's just not there. I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 I believe, and it was in the help files that came with it so I'm really perplexed at why it's not there. It's the only thing that appears to be missing.

Also, when I go to IPv4 setting and set it to Automatic, it doesn't connect to the router at all. I went to my Vista installation and did "ipconfig /all" to get values to plug in manually which is where I am now.

How do I check the network drivers?

Er, from my experience with Linksys routers, I don't trust them. The one that I use at lan parties always requires every computer to manually configure their DHCP tables. Look up on how the router is set up (Gateways, ect) online, plug those values in, and find the DNS numbers, then assign yourself a network IP number. I hope that helps. What router model is it?
