Random DNS Failure - Solved?

Okay, something wierd is going on.

DNS is randomly failing on this computer. Every once in awhile, either in a browser or nslookup, the servers just... stop responding.

As you can see, I've changed the DNS servers from the ISP-given ones to custom ones and it's still failing. Which makes me think it's a local computer issue.

Ran CWShredder, it didn't find anything. Checked the Internet Properties -> LAN Settings, none of the boxes are checked. (no proxy is set up.) Running a full Norton 360 scan now.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Also, ran speedtest.net and pingtest.net and they both came back phenomenal. So I don't think it's a connection issue. Also, even while the DNS servers aren't giving me anything, I can still ping them just fine by IP. So it's pretty much exclusively a local DNS problem.

Also also, the customer has since switched ISPs, and it's still giving the same problem. (Again, a local DNS issue.)

The router doesn't have DDNS (or any other funky dns settings that I could find) set up.

Also, winmsd > components > network > protocol has all the entries starting with "MSAFD" or "RSVP". The interwebs tell me this is a good thing.

EDIT3: Used this to reset tcp/ip networking. Seemed to work. However, required restarting the computer, which may also have temporarily fixed the problem. Regardless, it seemed to be working (fired off ~40-50 nslookup requests without a hitch... coming up with that many websites was a problem though) and I left. If the customer calls back, well then... :cry:

Just curious, do you have a reason to not use your ISP's DNS servers?

I find most ISP's DNS servers are a little on the slow side. I mean, they work fine, just OpenDNS / GoogleDNS seems to work ever-so-slightly faster.

That said, the reason I changed them in the above scenario was to rule out the possibility of a bad DNS server.

That might be overkill.

dig is a program that is an improvement over nslookup. You could try downloading and installing that.
