Drawing software - text on edges

Postby kriel » Tue Mar 22, 2011 5:13 pm UTC

I'm looking for some drawing software.

I'd like there to be text/labels on the nodes, as well as labels on the endpoints and middle of the edges.

I looked into powerpoint (text on the nodes is beautiful.. nothing on the edges) visio (text in the middle is ok, but not on the endpoints) and googled around. Dia seemed close, but no cigar.

I'm doing this for network diagrams, like so.

Code: Select all

Router -- port g0/24 ---------- ethernet link --------- port g0/1 -- switch
1.1.1.1                                                              1.1.2.1

Any thoughts?

EDIT: The labels on the endpoints are really the important ones, the one in the middle I can do without (tho it'd still be nice)

You should try solid edge 2d drafting.

1 - Its free
2- it has more formatting options then you would ever want
3 - Its free, you just need to register

Oooh, I like that. It doesn't quite work for what I'm using it for, but it'll definetely get used in the future.

I'm making a quite complicated routing diagram, where some devices have as many as 6 cables going into them. There's the port numbers for each end, and then some connection info in the middle, not to mention hostnames/ips on each of the nodes.

It's... nasty.

you can do that with this, add floating text and set ports ids and other variables :)

Why doesn't Visio work? Why can't you just anchor a text box ("glue") to the nodes?
I don't know what to do for you

I could only see how to attach text to the four corners and the center on there.

I need the text boxes on the connectors, not the nodes.

Here's what I'm trying to make a digital copy of. Notice the scribbling at each end of the wires, as well as more scribbling on the wire itself. All of the center nodes have 6 wires each (some may soon have 8, too. whee.)

2 Minutes in solid edge.
You can make it look alot nicer also.

edit: I missed the point of what you were wanting to do in my image, but it can do that.

one small section, but this can even be done in paint, or GIMP, you have nothing special to do. just lots o lines and numbers, Visio should work fine if you use floating text boxes

I need the text boxes on the connectors, not the nodes.

So put the text boxes at the connectors - better yet, create a template wire with text boxes anchored to the ends and middle of the lines, and just move the ends to where you need them. The "glued" text boxes will follow the line wherever you place it.
I don't know what to do for you

Has yEd been mentioned yet?

I mostly use it for its automatic layout features and they don't play very well with complex edge labels configurations, but if you're willing to move things around by hand so nothing overlaps I guess you can get good results.

Here's a quick example (I didn't have pretty networking icons/images on hand but if you have some you can use them as nodes) :

yEd: edges with "6 pos" and "side slider" labels

yEd: dragging a "side slider" label
