pdflatex help - how do I get out of here? (non-urgent)

Postby jazzman616 » Fri Dec 02, 2011 4:35 am UTC

I'm using pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 from a terminal.

I run into a problem when I've run it with bad parameters and I get the error
! I can't find file 'filename.tex'.
Please type another input file name:

At this point, I've realized that I just ran it in the wrong place or at the wrong time. My problem is that I want to exit the program and my only option seems to be quitting the terminal entirely and setting up my workspace again. So, while the problem is not urgent, I'd like to know if anyone has any solutions, as I've looked at the man page and I've tried Ctrl-C and it just doesn't let me quit. Any suggestions?

[*edit] That's perfect, thanks!

It looks like it'll give up if you feed it an EOF... on *nix-like machines (Linux, OS X, Cygwin, etc) hit Ctrl+D on a blank line, on Windows hit Ctrl+Z then Enter on a blank line.

Odd that it blocks Ctrl+C...

There's very little about Latex that isn't odd. At this point you should be more surprised if it behaves the way you expect. :-)

(Though ctrl-C works with my version. It sends you to another prompt where you can enter the normal 'x' to get out.)

ctrl-C fails with my version, but it does display a helpful message:
! I can't find file `yourmom.tex'.
<*> yourmom.tex

(Press Enter to retry, or Control-D to exit)
