Java not working in Chrome, fine everywhere else

Postby Chromana » Wed Apr 11, 2012 9:26 pm UTC

I'm kind of stumped. I had to recently reinstall Java from a previous installation*. Java is not running in Chrome at all any more (the bar at the top tells me I need to install Java when I try to run Java).

I have both Java 6 Update 31 (32-bit) and Java 7 Update 3 (64-bit) installed, as I do some Java development.

I have reinstalled everything, including Chrome, multiple times. Java works in Firefox (which uses the 32-bit Java installation, as does Chrome) so I know Java is installed fine.

In chrome://plugins/ the only thing relating to Java is "Java - Version: 10.3.1.255, NPRuntime Script Plug-in Library for Java(TM) Deploy" and it is enabled.

Maybe it's something to do with environment variables? Variables relating to Java:
  • JAVA_HOME is set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_03
  • PATH is set to %JAVA_HOME%/bin

I'm just kinda out of ideas. It's annoying to have to open Firefox when I need to load a webpage with Java in it.

Any ideas?

*I had to do some BlackBerry development (don't ask) which only works with 32-bit Java and Eclipse. However it didn't like it when I had 64-bit installed at the same time, so I had to uninstall everything to just install 32-bit. Then when I was done with BlackBerry I reinstall all the 64-bit stuff.

I would try removing Chrome completely - uninstall it, and then actually remove any files that Chrome puts on your machine. You can Google the file locations for your specific OS. THEN re-install Chrome and see if that works.

Do a barrel roll.

But seriously, I've had this issue with chrome before, it tends to get finicky when you install multiple versions of java on it. The easiest solution is offered above, although I would back up your plugins in case it doesn't work.

EDIT: Upon further research, it appears chrome does not support 64 bit java.

I edit an unreasonable amount of times.

Thanks for your reply but I've searched everywhere already, and none of those suggestions work. I'm well aware that Chrome only uses 32-bit, I mentioned it in my original post.

What I've done now:
  • Uninstalled Chrome and everything to do with Java, including all JDKs and JREs
  • Deleted all directories and files relating to both Chrome and Java (including Java's cache folder and user data for Chrome)
  • Ran a registry cleaner to remove any traces of old stuff
  • Removed all environment variables relating to Java
  • Restarted machine

Then I installed Java 6 32-bit JRE. Java then works in Internet Explorer and Firefox, so I knew the Java installation was fine. The Java (32-bit) section of the control panel correctly lists the JRE on the Java tab.
Then I installed Chrome and Java STILL doesn't work. Chrome gives the usual "plugin missing" yellow bar message.
Yes, I checked Java was enabled in about:plugins and I've checked everything else that the Java Help page here and Chrome help page here suggest. I'm kinda at my wit's end here.

Any more ideas?

I read somewhere that someone reinstalled Windows to get it working... I really don't want to have to do that.

I have the same problem. Java is enabled for all webpages, old versions of java update is uninstalled, recent version (java 6 update 32) is working fine on explorer but on chrome i only get a message of installing a plugin. after installing the plugin and restarting the same message appears. I have only one solution to this; use explorer for Java.

Hi everyone

I just experienced and solved this problem.
I came upon this thread while Google'ing for a solution, and since I managed to find my own solution I thought I wanted signed up just to answer this question.
That way other people might google and find this, and maybe that solution will work for them.

I too have both the JDK and JRE installed and in different version due to developing software in java.
Recently I had an issue where one of my own applets kept saying this "Plugin required"-thing in Chrome (At that time, all other Java applets worked fine as far as I can tell, It might also be an update that broke it though), so I tried to install the so-called "Missing Plugin".

The day after, I had to use an applet based website for online banking, and chrome reported that "Java TM" plugin was required. Bummer!

Anyway.... Back to the solution...
I went to windows add/remove and removed JavaFX, and restarted Chrome, as soon as I did this Java started working in Chrome again.
I also noted that while uninstalling JavaFX as strange error message came up, reading just: "Error C:\Windows\SysWOW64\npDeployJava1.dll".
This file is also what was reported as plugin in Chrome, odd thing is... It's still reported as a plugin in Chrome, and the file still exists.

I just joined to post that the above solution worked perfectly for me (also got here by Google.) JavaFX is still gone in my case, but I'll deal with that later.

Thanks to poster.

Hey guys! I recently fixed this problem with help of the reply above. In my case I had both Java 7 versions installed (32-bit and 64-bit) and Chrome wouldn't load java applications at ALL. What I went through to fix this was uninstalled my current version of JavaFX then re-installing the 64-bit version, and then the 32-bit version. Everything is working fine now, thanks for the help and I hope this helps someone!

(P.S. I registered just for this post lol)

Very encouraging, same problem, Chrome is not able to discover the well functioning Java 6.27 on my computer (I am not able to upgrade Java due to other SW requiring the older version).
But what if I do not have JavaFX installed? I can atleast not find it anywhere..

The correct solution is to uninstall the Java browser plugin and then never install it again.

I'm serious, the Java plugin is the largest, most serious and common source of malware holes today. You do not want it on your computer, unless you really enjoy getting viruses. I'm not surprised that it breaks in Chrome at various times - our security team is very good, and likely considers it safer to have Java broken than working. ^_^

I found a solution which works for me.

There is a conflict with Java Deployment Kit. I don't know how to uninstall it. The corresponding file "npdeployJava1.dll" is located in SysWOW64 folder on my a Win 7 system. See chrome://plugins to find out where it is located on your system. I renamed it (doesn't want to delete) to "npdeployJava1.dll__". Then I restart Chrome Browser and check the installed plugins (chrome://plugins) again. Now I see a Java-plugin is installed and applets are running. The Deployment Kit plugin (which I've renamed) is missing.

Hope this helps you too.
