Alt text does not work on Chrome

Postby Disordered » Wed May 23, 2012 8:22 am UTC

Hey, I noticed that alt text stopped showing up on linux version of Chrome, while it continues to work on Firefox. I noticed it first when "Old-Timers" was published. I did not try it on other OS to see if the problem is there.

Linux Mint Debian edition
Chrome Version 19.0.1084.46
Firefox 12.0

Works fine for me, in Chrome on Linux, with the same version number. Moving this from S/FI to Help Desk as it seems this is more likely a problem at your end than a problem with the site proper.
While no one overhear you quickly tell me not cow cow.
but how about watch phone?

You are right, it works now. Odd...maybe it was fixed in the meantime.
Anyway, problem is gone and this topic can be closed. Thanks for spending the time to look into it.

I've actually been getting the same issue for the past week. I suspected it was because of my dev version of Chrome, but seeing that it's affecting version 19 as well is interesting....

Same as him, it works just fine in Firefox.

Chrome 21.0.1145.0
Firefox 12.0

Both on Windows.

------

Though after a bit of googling I found an issue report on the chromium project detailing the problem...
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=129625
And claiming that it was fixed in the latest Canary build! So I guess it will be pushed in the next while?

ALT text isn't supposed to be a pop-up tip, and the browsers are simply functioning as they should. (It is a wide-spread misunderstanding.) TITLE is the one that should create a pop-up. The most simple and probably best solution would be that the pop-up texts for the strips were entered in both the ALT and TITLE fields in the future to ensure their visibility in most browsers. Old strips could be updated with a simple script.

It was a widespread misunderstanding a number of years ago (particularly when Internet Explorer was more dominant), but most people have figured that out by now, or so I would hope. xkcd.com certainly stores pop-up text in title tags.

Most people are also using CSS or other means of generating pages dynamically rather than having static HTML for every single page.

This is why bumping a year-old thread is not always a good idea.
