Pixel Dungeon

Postby King Author » Mon Feb 16, 2015 1:21 am UTC

Anyone played? It's a roguelike for mobile devices. What's so great about it is that it's a true roguelike, not dumbed down for weeny modern gamers. Permadeath, only able to win by luck, etc.

Unfortunately, the last few updates have killed it. In the name of countering what he believed to be an overused, overeasy strategy (which I had never even heard of before he mentioned it and which I believe does not and cannot actually work the way he thinks it can), the developer has introduced item degredation, which makes the game virtually impossible. Everyone hates it, the Pixel Dungeon social media sites have been ablaze with hatred since it was introduced in December, but he refuses to back down.

It's always sad to see a great game go to the crapper because the developer gets out-of-touch and snobby, but what can you do? I'll tell you what you can do -- build your own Pixel Dungeon, 'cause it's open source!

Heh, anyway, anyone play this game? Recent crap aside, it's super fun. If, like me, you were reared on Sierra games and don't mind dying dozens upon dozens of times, mostly from random stupid crap ;)

I've got it on my phone. I haven't played it in a few months (apparently not since the recent changes you mentioned), but every time I've played it, I've enjoyed it. It's a simple game, and it's great for passing time in an airport, or for something to do during a commercial break.

I haven't played it in months, but I put some much time into it in the past. After finishing it with all four races I felt I was done. Awesome game, supremely frustrating.

Both of you! DO NOT UPDATE! If you decide to play again, just ignore the update pop notifications - thankfully there are none in-game - and play.

I actually never beat it once, heh. I probably would have with the Rogue, but the worst thing ever happened. You know how when you die while holding an Anhk, it asks you if you want to rez or not? I was fighting the third boss, JUST about to kill him, and he got in a lucky shot and killed me, but I had my Anhk.

Well, I had been clicking on him to attack him, and it so happened his body was right over the gigantic "No, I don't want to rez" button, and I accidentally pressed it. That...was frustrating. I put in a ticket asking for a confirmation notice before you choose not to rez, but it was never met, apparently.

I honestly never liked the Ankh. Losing all my potions, wands, strong weapons and armor that I couldn't put on? That sucks A LOT and I never felt it was worth it.

Better than starting without all that stuff and being back on Floor 1 ;)

Plus, the Anhk is a last-resort failsafe. Dunno if you know (I didn't until someone told me) -- if you fill your Dew Container with ten drops of dew, it acts like an Anhk when you die, but it's automatic and you don't lose your stuff.

Ooh, Pixel Dungeon is open source, I gotta crack it open and maybe make a slightly modified version for personal use. Get rid of Item Degredation at least.

There's another version, called Shattered Pixel Dungeon that I believe doesn't have item degradation. I haven't played the original since getting it. It adds a few things, like some new items with odd uses, a cloak for the rogue that grants temporary invisibility, a pair of shoes you can feed seeds to and get a earth shield every so often, and a basin with fangs that you feed life to (not sure what that one does, died that run before feeding it more than 3 times.)

I never liked the ankh either, losing your inventory meant that if you died on a boss, you've got exactly zero chance of beating him without all the items you died with in the first place, so waste of an inventory slot.

One neat tactic is to not identify your health potions until as late as possible (usually the potion you have the most of by level 4-5). That way you can buy them from the stores after each boss for quite a lot cheaper than if they were identified.

Shattered PD doesn't have the automatic dew vial, unfortunately, it just works as a full life restore when full, or to bless an ankh for some sort of added benefit.

I've picked up Shattered Pixel Dungeon because of this thread. I'm not sure how much it's changed from the original Pixel Dungeon as described, but I disagree that it doesn't hand-hold. It warned me when I misclicked and went to drink a potion of liquid flame that I'd already identified! Ridiculous!
Kewangji: Posdy zwei tosdy osdy oady. Bork bork bork, hoppity syphilis bork.

Eebster the Great: What specifically is moving faster than light in these examples?
doogly: Hands waving furiously.

Please use he/him/his pronouns when referring to me.

Apparently it didn't used to warn you if you accidently clicked into the "void." some of the levels I can't imagine how many times I would fall.

Edit: if you bless the aukh with a full dew vial, you retain all of your inventory when you are rez'd.
