1000 blank white cards

Postby robinberghuys » Sun Sep 09, 2007 12:47 am UTC

Has anyone here heard of 1000 blank white cards or even played it? It's one of, if not the most awesome game ever.

People draw their own cards and play them. It's pretty simple, really, but here's a better description of the rules.

If you've played the game: what great cards have you made?

One of the cards that keeps coming back whenever I play it, is a 'get more beer card'.

*puts it on his list of "Stuff to do before I die"*

I like the idea, it reminds me of Nomic. Which is also on the aforementioned list.
All is well. We are not like the others.

In practice, it's possible to play this on the forums because it's so damn good a game that we need to play it NOW.

Rules: No double posting, ie playing two cards in a row.

I really want to play this but my friends think it would be boring. So lacking in creativity.

I've always wanted to play this, but none of the rules pages I've read have really given me an idea of what playing it is actually like.

I never thought any of my friends would go for it, either, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I guess playing is a lot like just going to the pub with your friends, except you don't have to be in the pub and the conversation is on the cards, kind of.

Whatever you want it to be like! Some games dissolve into meaningless babble, whereas other games are filled with complicated strategy that dissolves into meaningless babble.

I played a couple rounds of that with FiddleMath (et. al.).

He has a few cards from the game put up around his apt., and I'm pretty sure I've seen them around the CS building now too.

I don't think it would be all that fun without a good, firm ruleset. I'd prefer something similar to NOMIC than the card game equivalent of anarchistic subway performance art.

I imagined it as starting like Magic, but with all of the custom made cards thrown in.

Haha when i was reading through the list of forums i picked this one, because i am a gamer, and i saw this link and was like WOW!!! Ive played this game at scouts with friends many times, the last time was during the summer on our cruise up to the delta. Because we are all 15-19 the game easily gets crazy e.i. eating an oreo with sunscreen for stuffing, licking ranch of someones nipples, talking like a gangster the rest of the game (one of the tamer ones), switching pants with someone... i had to switch pants with a girl who is almost half my height

haha thanks for posting this thread, brought back some major memories, and for anyone who hasn't played this game, its intense

I still don't get it after reading the wiki... It could be fun, but I'd only play with my friends, and I think we have even funner stuff to do with our time.

I'm a UK guy, and switching pants with a girl is distinctly more disturbing over here.

We've played a variant called 1000 Blank White Shirts. 'cept there aren't usualy 1000 shirts.

Basically, you write down a character on a shirt. could be anyone - we've had Dan Rather, Emperor Palpitine, Particle Man... lots. Then you think of a power/drawback for the character - our Palpitine could take an apprentice whereby any bad stuff that happened to him could instead happen to his apprentice, whilst Dan Rather had to dramatically narrarate the game and could, at any point, declare that someone was:

-Dying of a heart attack
-dying of brain cancer
-dying of a japanese nuclear bomb
-had mountains of cocaine. TONNES OF COCAINE
etc.

Then you run around and play a variant of freeze tag/tag with those rules.
'Gehȳrst þū, sǣlida, hwæt þis folc segeð?
hī willað ēow tō gafole gāras syllan,
ǣttrynne ord and ealde swurd,
þā heregeatu þe ēow æt hilde ne dēah.

One day, I went to the office supply store and bought 500 blank white index cards, which I then proceeded to cut in half. I have a binder with about 200 saved cards, and probably twice as many in the "suck box".

Oh yeah, I play. I love it so much.

I play this sometimes, I made "2^X Points (where X is the number of point-granting cards on the table, not counting this one)." It takes a long time to be worth anything, but it's fun to watch the value go up exponentially.

Does anyone know if there's a good online implimentation of this? It'd be cool if there was some sort of virtual game table that allowed you to make your own cards, put them on top of each other or rotate them, arrange them... basically, a bunch of "drag-and-drop" objects for the cards, a chat window, a random card picker that could be set to different decks depending on the sort of game you want to play, and of course a simple paint program so you can make new cards quickly and while watching someone else's turn (if you make the cards when its not your turn then people don't have to wait for you as long to play it).

Of course, if you give it "image upload" capabilities, you can make cards in any program you want and import them. You can chat by all starting a room in a chat program and windowing it. The important thing would be the drag-and-drop, a simple card game interface that doesn't try to enforce the rules for you (i.e. not designed for a specific game, but just a card table-style-sandbox) and that lets you make your own cards. Does anything like that exist?

Got to play this for the first time at the Baltimore geohash last Saturday. It's great fun.

The rules won't give you a good idea as to what playing is really like; you have to just play the game. See if you can't find a few others who have played it before to get the idea. I think that helps.

My favorite card was one someone else at the hash made. It said "If target player does the Macarena, they get 100 dance-like-a-maniac points. Otherwise you get 100 points."

There are compromising pictures of me doing the Macarena. They will be on the internet.

I have two words for you:

IRC version

(alright, that was kinda 4 words, if you extend the acronymn)

anyway, in the IRC channel I frequent, couple guys made an IRC version, it is more like 'infinite number of potential instructions played out threw the use of an IRC bot', but the same thing

I'll talk to the couple of guys who made it and see if I can grab the source for you guys, I bet #xkcd would have fun with this (I have dropped by there a couple times... what ever happened to xkcdb?)

By the way, have a look at 1kbwc_config.rb for your configuration needs. You can have multiple decks, in the decks/ folder (.txt files). I've included a command list in HTML format.

I used to play this with my brother and sister. It always played just like a trading card game with no way of winning, though (we all played Magic). Fun but not as hilarious as what I'm hearing from you guys. I ought to try it with my friends.

Most of our cards were references to books and games. I had a Sandworm that went around eating everything in the playing area until my brother drew an ocean :x
Then I thought, "Man, I should have just said 'yeah.' "

Oh man, I haven't thought about this in years. Going back through my cards, I found these:

What's in Your Wallet? (aka the most broken card in the history of collectable card games)
Gain control of any card that target player controls.
(Illustration is of a hand removing a credit card from a wallet)

You're Using Proxies, Right?
Fold target card in half, PERMANENTLY RUINING its collectable value.

Behind The Music
This turn, gain a million points, have sex, do drugs, lose a million points, go to rehab, gain 500 points.

1000 blank white cards

Postby krazykate » Wed Jan 21, 2009 10:14 pm UTC

So I discovered the game a couple months ago and have been using outdated business cards of family and friends, but it's getting frustrating depending on my friends getting laid off to get cards for free. I've checked out some business card sites, but most of them figure I'm using them for my business (go figure), so they make me customize them and stuff. Where can I go to get 1000 blank business cards?

This game is pretty awesome. I got some at CVS, but they weren't completely white; they had lines on them. Try office supply stores.

You can probably find something like that anywhere that sells stationary?

You could also buy some larger sheets of cardboard and cut them up yourself. Nothing in the rules says the cards have to be on a consistent shape or size*.

* Hmm. Makes me want to make a card that allows pulling out a pre-prepared A3 BWC with some huge list of rules that end up doing practically nothing.

Yeah, I want to play too, but I'm more in a bit of a pickle. I can't find anyone to play with. But the search will continue!

Slightly off-topic: Why do things always pop up when I read about them? It's weird. Am I the main character of an RPG or what? Just recently I (re-)read the Wikipedia on 1000 Blank Cards and now everywhere I go it pops up. The same goes with new words. I've heard them and suddenly everybody starts using them. It's weird.
