Just wondering if there are any fellow players on these forms and to see if i can persuade anyone else to give it a go :)

It seams to be that EVE realy appeals to the kind of people who frequent these forums. Ive blown through alot of MMOs but tbh this one is by far the most appealing. Its recently got a massive overhaul with new ships, new graphics, new tutorial system, imo theres never been a better time to give it a go.

For those not familiar with EVE it is a MMO set in space (Think Elite Online). It is the polar opposite of WoW and its clones. Skill training is based on real time so people who cant play for hours and hours a day dont lose out. Its been going for over 4 years and it is so good once you get into it. Unfortunatly it does have a steep learning curve, I havent tried out the new tutorial but im sure its a massive improvment on the old one.

EVE works on a single server so all players in the world are on the same server which is damned good imo. It is also the most harsh and brutal online game in existance. If you die in most online games nothing much happens, your equipment may get damaged, you may lose some money but no big loss. EVE if you die all the kit you happened to be using and the ship you were flying is lost forever (though there is an optional insurance program).

This is not a game where you get your hand held. In WoW if someone scams you they will get banned and you will have your stuff returned. In EVE if you are stupid enough to fall for a scam in most cases you will be lucky to get sympathy. Some truley awe inspiring scams have been pulled off in the past, the most famous of which is the Guiding Hand Social club scam where a bunch of evil doers were hired to tear a corporation to pieces. They infiltrated every level of a large corp and on a set time took everything from the corp hangers and killed the corp leader and looted the frozen corpse for the contracter. The PVP in EVE is awsome. Its one of the few games where from the word go you can compete with the oldest players. I.e high level doesnt = you kill everyone worse than you. The fact that if you die you lose your ship makes PVP insanely fun and addrenaline filled. And it stretches from solo roaming as a pirate to epic 400 man fleet battles.

Its also got the most realistic economy of any game ive ever played (theyve even hired a distinguished economist to write reports on the state of EVEs economy every week). There are so many proffesions you can adopt, in reality and infinate number, you define what you want to do in the huge universe of EVE.

I always feel that EVE is one of the few games made and defined by the players. If you walk around towns in WoW you will see statues to fictional figures from history. In EVE you will see billboards displaying news and bounties which have been set on actual players.

I personally love EVE, but could never find people to play it with. If people from this forum want to make a corp, I wouldn't mind getting back into it (after the holidays). Plus, the upgraded graphics engine looks *amazing*.

And you can pay for gametime with in game cash :)

I got hooked on Eve for the trial a couple of months ago. Thankfully my trial ended, but I find myself craving to play again. I *loved* the concept of time-based skills rather than grinding, as I really don't have much time to invest in the game.

If xkcd makes a corp, I might have to subscribe.

Atm in out in 0.0 grinding for sec status. I was going to make a one man corp and start war deccing high sec carebears for isk and lulz :twisted:

However if we get enough support for an XKCD corp then id seriously consider it.

Out of interest what kind of corp would most interest the people of XKCD? Piracy? Carebearing? High sec war decs? Mining (i sneer at you)? All of the above?

I'm currently helping a newish corp get running. We just bought a freighter, and have a set goal of putting all members at 500 mil after 6 months of play (if they want it). We've all got some carebearing skills (3 hulk pilots, i've got mining director to 5 which was a total waste, but oh well), most have some industry (we had 5 people building components for resale and invention), and we've got two or three inventors. We just joined a small alliance thats napped to TRI in northwestern space.

I'd be interested in empire war dec'ing, but no piracy. I'm primarily interested in getting a bunch of people together to knock off some big goals, as soloing is incredibly boring. Eve-school has it right, you teach a newb how to get stuff done and let them do it, and you've got a very potent and useful ally.

Particularly, a chain of POSs cranking out composites, a wing of industrialists fueling the suckers and mining under the protection of a military branch also pushing back invading gangs. I'm not really interested in 0.0 politics, generally side against BoB but dislike goons more. Eve's a great example of working capitalism, and as such, has no real middle class.

But i'll hit you up in game. Inquiry: Whats your current training goal?

Well when I started I picked a pure science/tech guy who pretty much sucks at everything else (I like to specialize). I liked the idea of being an inventor, with some mining on the side - but understandably it's quite a lonely playstyle.

A corp would fix that, i'm sure.

Mining solo is pretty much a macro endevor. If you want to really make bank mining, you have to do it in a group (dedicated haulers, dedicated link runner...) and you'll be shocked at how quickly your profits scale past the "I bring in 1000 m3 ore a minute, and the ores worth 50isk an m3, so i'll make 50000 ISK per hour..."

Also, invention is sort of the final point in building, so its a good goal to set. With 5 research slots you can keep yourself pretty busy inventing.

I ask this question a lot, but another opinion would be good.

Just HOW much play time is required to be a good player.
And by good player, I mean the equivalent of reaching level 70 in WoW just so you can PvP effectively, or do instances, or generally be a valuable player in a guild/group.
(I hate WoW but it seems like a good example to contrast)

I haven't had the time for it recently, but I've played intermittently (~25m sp). I've been out in 0.0, but there tends to be some pressure to have regular involvement, so I'm currently an unattached empire dweller. I might hit you up in game Izawwlgood; if your corp is low pressure, I might be interested.

As far as general descriptions are concerned, I usually describe it as a mixture of trade wars, privater and homeworld.

As far as economic experiments are concerned... it is a pretty large, old, and well developed economic system. Out in 0.0, you can sort of mess up individual markets by buying out stuff that people tend not to think to ship out. Beyond that, real market manipulation seems limited. It is all one universe, though goods have to be shipped by players from place to place, so there is a lot of market inertia.

It really depends on what you want to do, or what your corp is up to. To solo mine, i'd say 3-4 months and you'll be in a permatankable hulk. To have fun mucking up some miners in low sec, i'd say a month and a half.
Eve isn't so much about skills as it is manpower. 5 guys with a month of training will outmine a max skilled hulk pilot. A dude with two years of combat training can still be ganked, and no fit is ultimate.

So i dunno, a month and your doing just about any mining activity side by side as an active contributor. Two weeks and your helping.

As for economic pyromania, I've often though of stuff to do but can't hit on anything. Buying out all the competition isn't really an option, as the Jita markets got a really high rate of turnover, and the volume is staggering. In 0.0 its common practice when laying siege to an outpost to buy all the stuff for sale as it won't amount to more then a bil or two, and put it back for sale at a much higher price. Or seed really low buy orders on mins and ships when a retreat is being beaten, people will offload TONS of mins at absurdly low prices in an effort to not leave shit behind. (I once bought a helios for 50 mil to get bpc's out, and another time picked up a load of like 50000 megacyte at maybe 300 per) But any ideas?

I once read about somebody starting the game, borrowing 2m isk from a friend, and then proceed to become an effective solo belt pirate in a rifter, netting 20+m from ransoms and loot over his 2 week trial period.

That said, with about 6 month of skill time, and a reasonable amount of missioning/mining you have the skills and can afford the ships to mine or rat in 0.0 and therefore be of interest to the "endgame" pvp corps.

One thing to remember is that in eve it basically never hurts to throw in more cannon fodder, so even lower skill pilots would be useful, so long as they can be trusted, (moles/spies are rampant in the game) and so long as they somehow dealt with the fact that it is hard to make money in 0.0 when you can only fly frigates.

On the mining side, if you start your character for it specifically, you can be in a decent hauler the same day that you create your character.

Atm im just training up skillz which i realy should have already (Im getting Acceleration Control to 4 atm for tech 2 Med MWDs)

However all my training recently has been focused on getting me into a fully optomised Comandship of pwn.

I would be lying if i said you didnt need time to get into the best ships. Technically the best ships ingame are the Super Capitals like Titans and Motherships but they are not a reasonable goal and are not of interest to most players.

But it this way, Battleships are the main stay of most fleets, the real war horses of most large scale engagments and you could be into most with fully optimised gear and decent skills within 4-6 months (Some ships are more skill intensive than others)

As for economic domination there are many things you can do. I once made a fairly large amount of Isk buying up all heavy water in the main EVE trade hub (Jita) and reselling at a tiny increment.

Making isk through marketering is very much doable, infact trading will always be a useful career choice, there is alot of isk to be made.

You can rat in 0.0 solo with a couple of weeks to a month in 0.0. Ability to rat is not what Alliances look for. EVE is all about specialisation. There are around 30 years worth of skills to be trained in EVE so clearly chosing a path or a set of paths and sticking to them is important. Alliances look for people who can fullfill certain roles which they require, be that mining, hauling, Capitalship piloting, Gang Boosting or Logistics. Thats not to say you cant branch out in EVE but a getting a good idea of what you want to do is useful.

P.S On a small scale here is a nice trick i pulled. The main trade hub Jita is next door to a system called Sobeiski. Its only one jum pso its easy to get back and fourth but the jump actually crosses a regional barrier. The market system works on a regional system so you can only see what is for sale and being brought in the region you are in. The system Sobeiski is in the Lonetrek region which is a barren shithole with a fairly shite market. What i did was buy expensive implants in Jita then sold them at 100% markup in Sobeiski. Because they were the only unit of the implant being sold in the region some twits actually brought them even though unbeknownst to them they were being sold at half the price in Jita. There is alot of money to be made from idiots.

I've looked into this game before, but thought it wouldnt be worth it to get into it now since its been out for so long. If XKCD wants to make a "corp" then I would definitely look into it

I picked up the trial and subscribed after a few days. I'm still very much a noob, flying my Caracal around doing level 2 missions and skilling for salvage, but I'd love to join a corp. My Eve handle is Lyriss.

I've been playing for a little over a week. I'm focusing my training on mining, but I have nothing against piracy and I would like to try it later on. I'd definitely be interested in a XKCD corp. I'm in a small friendly corp right now, but their schedule will not fit with mine when school will start again, so I was thinking of changing corp anyway.

Unfortunatly im on holiday atm so getting on to help you is going to be tricky but post here if yu have any problems

Post your race and what career you want to persue and ill be able to give you specific advice.

For now follow instructions, do level 1 missions or mine, stay in systems with a sec status of above 0.4 (this is shown in the top left hand corner of your screen with system details and get into the newbie help and recruitment channels.

EVE has a steep learning curve which a good corp can decrease, post here with any specific problems or querys though, general advice for eve is quite hard im afraid

A few tips from a long-time addict:

Do the tutorial. All of it. It'll give you a good idea of what's going on, and make people more inclined to help you.

Never be afraid to ask for help. It's a complicated game, and the Rookie Help chat channel is there for a reason. There are always people willing to give rookie pilots advice.

Time your skill training properly. The less time you waste, the faster you will get better.

Train your learning skills up. If you're trialling, I'd only recommend a couple of levels. If you decide to stick around, get the tier one skills to 4 and the tier twos to at least 3. Training will go much quicker.

Always, always, ALWAYS keep your clone up-to-date. Always.

Stick to systems with a security status of 0.5 or above (highsec). If you go into 0.4 or below (lowsec), you can and will be killed. Never go into lowsec unless you are aware of the dangers and fully prepared for them.

Remember that it is your responsibility to safeguard your person and your possessions. If you get stolen from or killed in a situation you didn't want to be in, it is, unfortunately, your fault. Just be sensible about what you do.

Always assume the worst about someone you do not know. Tricks and traps are all too common.

It pays to be polite and courteous at all times, even if someone has robbed or killed you. They are perfectly within their rights to do so, and are merely playing a different aspect of the game to you (unless, of course, you jump right into PvP). Many of them are not bad people. Smacktalk can only make things worse.

If you find the game boring, you may not be following the best career path for you. There are many, many things you could be doing, including, but not necessarily limited to: mining, manufacturing, inventing, trading, mission running, ratting, stealing, exploration, highsec corp wars, low sec piracy, and nosec alliance wars. If it's not fun, stop doing it.

Most importantly, download EVEmon!!!

Its a training scheduler that not only tells you what skills you need to use what ships/items, but but most importantly, will also recommend what learning skills to train to cut time down. If ever asking what you need to use what item, EVEmon will answer it.

And if your bored in the game, stop playing by yourself. Its a group game, you got to play with other people to get stuff done. Post your game name here and we can figure out some group activities to get up to.

Heh, the Rifter is great :) imo is the best solo piracy boat purely for cost effectivness and the nature of low sec.

Dammit, this thread makes me wanna play EvE again but I'm not sure. I mean it was fun and the amount of options you have are amazing, but I remember it being very hard to learn and took a helluva long time.

I did a trial of EVE at the request of a friend, and largely liked what I saw. I stopped, though, because I really didn't feel like I had the time for another MMO and I knew that I would be setting alarms to get on EVE the second my skill stopped to start another one, and decided that really wasn't healthy.
I mostly post over at LessWrong now.

It's not so bad. I can generally juggle my skills so that I can do the fast ones consecutively while I'm home, then start a long one that will finish either in the morning before I leave for work, during lunch, or while I'm home at night. It's not the most optimal path if you absolutely have to have skill X as soon as possible, but almost any skill is useful, and it avoids dead periods.

That works in the early stages but you quickly get to a point where none of the skills you want take less than a couple of days at best to train.

So, I hang out in the Heimatar region. Who wants to do stuff? I'm gonna be running level III missions.

So, I got tired of the fact that the appearance of my band name in my signature made my posts on this forum the dominant result when googling for my music. Anyway, if you think I might happen to be a good musician, you can test this theory here.

Pah. Missions are for people who haven't spent the last month or so training for exploration skills. As soon as I get my second monitor so I can do other things while also keeping an eye on my probing, it's off to the uncharted waters of Concordless space. Soon all those sweet sweet deadspace modules will be mine...

Hey, you got up to 10 build slots a toon realistically (adv. mass production 5 takes like a month... so forget that noise)

Aw, I miss Eve...
I played it for 6 months last year and had a ball.
Nevertheless work has higher priority than play.

i play eve. have two characters, have only been playing for a month or so, but still manage to pvp and get in on the big fleet action. i'm in a large corp and so there's always something to do.
eve fitting tool is also handy, so you can see what you can fly/fit
