Achievements!

Postby Ian Ex Machina » Fri Jan 18, 2008 2:57 pm UTC

For all those with an Xbox 360 (or any other games/consoles that give achievements) what achievements do you think are great, funny or just plain crappy.

One that makes me laugh the most so far is
Vanilla Crazy Cake - Complete all 6 advanced Portal levels. (I think it may be because in my head I emphasise the crazy).

Assassin's Creed, Enemy of the Poor. Find me one other game that will give you an achievement for throwing around civilians that annoy you.
It's okay, I'm Chaotic Neutral. I can kill him over the loot.
Overexposure to pieaholicx may, in semi-rare cases, emancipate dental fillings, crowns, tooth enamel, and teeth.

There's one in Guitar Hero 2 for failing on Easy. I can't remember any of the more memorable ones.

Most of the Crackown achievements. "Body Armour" is impaling a dozen or so bodies on your car with the harpoon gun and then driving it around.

Crackdown has some good ones, for sure. There's one for keeping a car in the air with explosions for 20 seconds.

I like the genocide achievement on Dead Rising...killing an entire township's worth of zombies...

(I don't have it, but my friends do :P)

Another one I quite like is COD4
Down Boy, Down - Break a dog's neck in game.

I like this purely for the image of it being said in a dark morbid tone by the soldier after you do it.

Half Life has some of the best and worst I've seen. For one thing, I spent wasted a fuckton of time squishing grubs and came up sixteen short! There's no way I could have missed 16 of them. :( Something like that I think doing 85-90% should be sufficient. Oh, and I crossed that beach with the antlions and it didn't give me credit. It did involve about 30 failures and loading the game, though.

I did like some of the ones in ass ass inscreed, but I'm so pissed off about the end of that game that I don't care.

Best achievement ever.

Edit: But really, achievements are damn annoying. Sometimes you get one or two pretty easy achievements when you first start off, but then they suddenly become ridiculously annoying, like "collect every hidden object ever in the whole game! bwahaha!". Then you get the "comedy" ones for doing something fairly obvious but stupid.

To be honest, they usually wreck my enjoyment of the game, because i'm trying to bust my balls and replaying bits of the game, doing all these stupid things rather than play the game through as normal and enjoy it. Unfortunately, the achievements are THERE, so I can't just ignore them and get on with the game...

Yeah, you can ignore the achievements. Turn off the notifications then don't look at them. Or just do like I do and just play the game as you normally would. If you get achievements, great. If not, no worries. It's even easier on more open-ended things like Crackdown where you can beat the game then go back and get the achievements if you want. Or not. Whatever.

Although I have achievements from the Burger King games since one night an e-friend and I decided to get them while drinking beer on Live. It was interesting to say the least.

Well, yes - you CAN ignore them. But you just know in the back of your mind that they're there, itching to be completed. ...plus my brother has more points than me. :(

And the fact that they don't matter makes it all the more important. Somehow.

The Gnome one from HL2 is good, but I like Hot Potat-owned: Kill a combine soldier with his own grenade

Probably my least favorite would be the flags in Ass Ass Inscreed. I was upset when GTA San Andreas required *all* the easter eggs to be found before it gave you anything, I much preferred it when you got something new for every 10 or so "packages." But in AC you get nothing. Other than being convenient save spots to hit before you go on a rampage, they really serve no purpose.

The Darkness - Happy Birthday - Acquire Creeping Dark.
Best birthday present ever.

Halo 3 - Used Car Salesman - Destroy a vehicle that has three enemies in it in a ranked playlist or in campaign.

Kane & Lynch - Damned if you Do/Damned if you Don't.
Only awesome because they are both there.

As for my thoughts on achievements, I really don't like the idea of giving you an achievement for doing something in the story, that's not a special achievement, doing things like killing 53,594 zombies is. They're more or less the same thing as merit badges, and nobody has problems with those. It's gamerscore that I have a problem with, you get rid of gamerscore, and you get rid of the one complaint most people use against achievements.

That one's fun, though not that hard. I'm not a big achievement person--for example I'm never, ever putting myself through the torture required to squish all the grubs or transport the gnome across all of Ep. 2. I'd rather just play the game for it's own sake.

I found that one extremely annoying, mainly because I hate Alyx and she kept killing the combine throwing the grenade...

Is there any information about when achievements are coming to HL2 and CS:S on Steam? :?:

I don't have an X-Box but I have wasted many hours playing Halo with a friend in X-Box Live. One day my friend rented Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and we started playing multiplayer when we got this achievement:
You have a friend!

Simply awesome.
Why, why, why! Because it's all logic and reason now. Science, progress, laws of hydraulics, laws of social dynamics, laws of this, that, and the other. No place for three-legged cyclops in the South Seas. No place for cucumber trees and oceans of wine.

Overlord. While I don't much like that game (good in theory but gets too hard too quickly, too many things to spend points on) it had some funny achievments.

I was happy when I finished Medium in Rock Band that it gave me achievements for both Easy and Medium. I was alternately a bit angry since it meant I could have just played through Hard and skipped Medium altogether. Because seriously, playing through Easy is mindnumbingly boring. I am talking guitar here, I can barely play drums on Easy.
