Touhou!

Postby Dark Shikari » Thu Feb 21, 2008 12:57 am UTC

Some of you may have heard of Touhou, some not. For those of you who haven't, your typical gameplay session looks something like this:

Image

Touhou is a series of Japanese "curtain fire"/"bullet hell" shooters from the mysterious developer ZUN, who has made roughly a dozen games so far consisting of addicting gameplay, horrendously difficult bosses, with unique soundtracks for each game, too. He works completely alone--every game is a one-man project.

The story revolves around a mysterious magical land whi--ah, screw it, its just an excuse to fill the screen with hundreds of bullets in the name of fun. English patches for many of the games can be found on the intarwebs, though they're really not necessary. The basic gameplay is standard topscroller, with lives and bombs. Bombs are called "spell cards"; each type has a different effect. Each "form" of the boss is represented through a series of spells which it casts. Once all of these are beaten, the boss is dead. Collecting enough blue powerups gives extra lives. Red powerups raise one's weapon power (eventually to max). One can hold shift to "focus" one's attacks towards a tighter area and do more damage, though this slows you down. Each game has one or two unique mechanics in addition to these main ones.

Gameplay videos:

Short (30 seconds of me fighting a boss on one of the easier levels, on Normal difficulty, since I suck pretty badly):
Linkage (if you can't play it, get VLC or something)

Long (11 minutes of some insane guy shredding the last level of Mountain of Faith on the hardest difficulty, mostly consisting of an absurdly difficult boss fight):
Linkage (sorry for the crappy large file host)

So who plays Touhou? I've only played on and off for a few weeks, and still haven't beaten Perfect Cherry Blossom on Normal--but I'm getting there... I'll do it eventually  . And to think I know people who can beat it without using any continues... on Lunatic difficulty...

I've been playing Touhou since I became instantly addicted to PCB on Halloween 2007. Here's my best replay so far, of Phantasm in Perfect Cherry Blossom: [ EDIT: Old video link removed. ]

I was told that Touhou's little brother, called "Hollow world of god", is more forgiving to newbies. So, you might want to try that one first. On a semi-related note, I suck at this type of games. :|

It's mostly memory, just a few days ago I beat Normal mode on Th11 with ReimuA, the game stats said I had played her (ReimuA) for a total of about 4 hours (can't remember exact number, somewhere from 3:30-3:50) so it's just persistence really.

Also, if you want to be able to actually sleep at night... DO NOT LISTEN TO TOUHOU MUSIC REMIXES.

Every single fucking night, at 4am when I'm really god damn tired and decide to stop browsing the net.... I can hardly keep my eyes open... but I can't goto sleep because fucking Touhou music is playing in my head.

Edit: Also don't play "Easy" seriously... start on Normal.

Oh, hey, the thread is alive again. And I only noticed because Naurgul told me that my link was broken. (Thanks again for bringing that to my attention, by the way.)

Anyways, to make up for that, a couple newer videos of mine:
Mountain of Faith - No Deaths Extra (with flagrant abuse of the MarisaB glitch): [link]
Perfect Cherry Blossom - Phantasm: [Part 1] [Part 2]
Imperishable Night - Spell Card Practice videos: [Spell Card 205] [Spell Card 222]
Perfect Cherry Blossom - Spell Card 128: [link]

Also, a couple of my favorite fan remix videos (these are NOT mine):
ケロ ⑨ Destiny (Kero ⑨ Destiny)
やくもと! (Yakumoto!)
ラストダンス (Last Dance) - I suspect the guy who added the subtitles was just making stuff up after 4:00. Here's the original version without subtitles: [link]
魔理沙は大変なものを盗んでいきました (Marisa Stole the Precious Thing) - probably the most famous of all Touhou remixes.

You probably don't need to worry too much about translations except for maybe certain abilities.

The earlier games seem to be much easier than the newest ones (th11). Except for th9.5 but that doesn't seem to have a difficulty setting...

Well, considering the storylines consist of something like "Oh, who are you? Why are you here? Huh, well I might as well fight you" and "Why is it so misty outside?.... You there, stop!" you're actually missing a lot. They're awesome.

Anyone got any tips on how to beat Possessed by Phoenix's 2nd part (blue arrows) and Hourai Doll? I lose all my lives there...

Move in a clockwise circle. It works surprisingly well on both.
For Possessed by Phoenix, you should be moving pretty much constantly.
For Hourai Doll, tap over a little at a time. After a while, make your movements more like a rectangle. Once Mokou starts shooting the lines of red arrow bullets, continue tapping when moving horizontally, but move at a more constant speed for the left and right vertcal edges of your rectangle. Try to start moving down from the top right corner of your rectangle just as she starts with one of the red arrow lines. Same timing for when you start to move up from the bottom left corner, but nudge right so the red arrow line misses you to the left. It's kinda hard to describe, so I'll upload my own replay to YouTube.

By the way, how do you handle Hourai "Fujiyama Volcano"? It's the one spell card I always have to bomb on.

I do fine on Possessed By Phoenix except for when the blue arrows come out, typically it gets too crazy during that part. Hourai Doll I have trouble dodging the yellow bullets as well as everything else... I suppose it's just practice.

Fujiyama volcano, well I bomb a heap on that too but I figure I just need more practice and to not use focus as much. I try to arc from side to side but it gets really hectic when lots of red orbs come out. I seem to do better un-focused just because you have to move so fast after the lines+volcano spam to be in a good position to dodge in the other direction.

Edit: I just beat Fujiyama in Spell Practice as Rm+Yk, I start up in the top-left corner, then get just out of range of the bomb then focus and constantly move so that the lines just miss me, when the last bomb comes out try to unfocus and get to the top-right (about equal with the collection line will do) then unfocus and move back towards the left dodging the lines+volcanos, again try to get up near the collection line point. Once she shoots off the single volcano again focus and move out of it's range and start weaving your way through the red orb mess making sure to keep a constant speed to avoid getting hit by the bombs. If you need to I suppose you could repeat but at this point in time she died for me. I think that strat would work, but like anything the long you spend doing it the more chance you have of fucking it up.

Code: Select all

______________
X
      M

_____________
Stay in Focus using Ren to hit Moukou, get to top-left corner.
______________
O
      M

X

_____________
Volcano should land at O and you should move to X to be safe.
______________

      M

            X

O
O
_O_O_O______
The instant the last volcano goes out try get to where X is, you will probably have to unfocus. Try get the bombs to land where the Os are (I think it's 5, maybe 4? - I forget)

______________

      M

X

            O
            O
________O_O_O
Now I focus.

______________

      M

O

  X

_____________
This is where it gets hard w/ a huge grid of red orbs.

______________

      M

            X

O
  O O O O
_____________
At this point I killed her thanks to Ren, but I suppose it might be possible (but probably even more hectic) to repeat the process.

Edit: I didn't save that replay (accidentally hit "yes" to try it again) but I did it again and uploaded a reply (first time, woohoo).

Edit: I'm afraid that when I go really really well on Mokou and beat Hourai Doll I'll have accidentally unlocked imperishable shooting and then get owned.

Well, if you do, you're in good company. The first time I captured Hourai Doll, it put me over the 50% Spell Card capture rate needed to unlock Imperishable Shooting, and I completely botched it.

Edit: Thanks for the tip; I've finally managed to stop sucking at Fujiyama Volcano. Though I'm still not consistent enough for an actual Extra run, but a 12% or so success rate is much better than my previous 0%.

Yeah well, I seem to be prone to making stupid tiny small mistakes all the time. I mean on individual cards in extra I can 100% a lot of them, but when I put it in practice and do them all in a row in an extra run I end up having to death bomb on some of them, or just die if I'm out of bombs...

Oh also, that fucking 1 Fairy before Mokou there has only been 1 time when I was really really really close to finishing it without bombing/dying :-/.

Edit: Also yeah, Volcano is still like 10-15% capture for me too :-/.

I suppose you might be able to order it online, or go to the Comiket or wherever it gets released in Japan. Or illegally download it.

Man that one non-spell card of Mokou is freakin' impossible. The purple circles one, how am I supposed to not bomb at least twice through that?

Edit: Is it just me or is PCB harder than IN? I guess maybe I'm not used to the game yet, but even the Reimu has her death bomb window reduced by like 10x in this one...

Edit: Maybe I'm just being too nonchalant with it, but I really suck at PCB... I mean, I'm not that great at the game... but I didn't think I would be doing this bad.

I finally beat IN's Extra Mode. I made huge mistakes on Honest Man's Death and Woo though, ones I typically don't fail...

I didn't get to see Imperishable Shooting.

Is it just me or is Normal -> B slightly harder than Extra Mode? :-/

It's more like "Ikaruga is similar to Touhou (except with less bullets on screen and a polarity absorber shield)".

Also The Touhou Series ('Project Touhou') just has an amazingly ridiculous amount of doujin art, music, video games etc.

I like Marasy's piano renditions of Touhou music, like Cirno's Perfect Math Class. Reverie is also a good album with piano Touhou music, but Marasy's songs feel more real because I've seen him play.

They're similar in that they're both danmaku shmups. But I was answering under the assumption that the target audience didn't know what danmaku shmups were.

While I guess it isn't wrong to call Ikaruga a bullet hell game, because of the polarity mechanic, it very rarely tasks the player with actually dodging bullets.

Man, I SUCK at this. The only completion I have without continues is Imperishable Night on EASY.

Don't play easy. Just keep trying normal you'll eventually get it. It's kind of like DDR/Stepmania. After a while you'll just -see- the patterns, also memory helps too.

Thats the problem with Toramaru... curvy lasers are fucking hard to see.

Heh, what would you want to do that?

Anyway. IN seems -really- easy compared to PCB... I can do Normal/Extra IN without any trouble but PCB kept destroying me....

Until recently that is, I used to not be able to get past Youmu but when I finally did.... I got all the way up to after Yuyuko! (Died on Resurrection Butterfly). I think it has something to do with how the controls are different in PCB or something (they feel weird and slow and strange, though it might be one of my settings).

Because it's interfering with my ability to do homework. Did you know I've gone through the entirety of the Touhou TVtropes page and clicked on virtually every link? Took damn near forever.

Who do you use for PCB? I can get past the Primasliver (sp?) sisters on Reimu A and Sakuya A (with a lot of bombs) on normal. Past that I kinda die.

Any character for PCB. It just feels... er.. more "clunky" and it feels like my hitbox is way bigger in IN and my Deathbomb window is much smaller.

I think PCB is known to have a slight input delay.

Also, IN does have a considerably greater counter-bomb window than any of the other game. And if you play with Reimu & Yukari, they have a smaller hitbox than just about anything else in the whole series. I suspect it might be just a single pixel.

Hmm I think it is bigger than just a pixel but it is pretty damn small. And yeah the death bomb window is huge... but PCB seems smaller than SA for me.

Anyway I just figured out the trick to Emperor of the East and got it after a few tries. Also did Blind Nightbird.

Edit: Just beat Heaven Spider's Butterfly-Capturing Web on the 2nd Try! Yay Tiny Hitbox.
