I've found that one of the easiest ways to get lots of iron is from the goblins. It keeps my furnace operator almost constantly busy melting down all that narrow equipment.

That sounds like a good idea.

BTW, is anyone up for a bloodline game? (Lets hope we get iron ;-))

Just got a rather special artifact the other day. One of my metalsmiths got in a mood, took three iron bars, and barricaded himself in the forge. I got some charcoal and lignite smelting up and running, and soon he presented his work. I though, "Great, a legendary armorsmith or weaponsmith, just what I need for my steel production."

But it says I got an Iron anvil. Big disappointment, all I have now is a Legendary blacksmith.

But wait! I take a look at the anvil. Turns out it's worth a whooping 144 000! And he made it out of 3 iron bars!

That's nothing against my aluminium statue containing an infinitely recursive picture of itself. It was somewhere in the vicinity of 500 000.

I once had an aluminium barrel with bands of aluminium, spikes of aluminium, and an image of dwarves in native gold. I think it was 7 pieces of aluminium and 1 of native gold, and was worth a LOT, though I don't remember exactly how much.

There was another one going on at one point, I think it died.

I would join in, but I'm terrible at keeping track of what's happened for other people, and the whole point of one is to keep a record of what goes on isn't it?

I would love to take part in something like that but i still consider myself a massive nub. I only recently worked out how magma forges and stuff work, ive never had a military and i dont think ive ever seen the 3rd dwarf wagon arrive.

Ive never actually lost, ive just grown tired of a fortress and wanted to try again.I cant realy learn by mistakes as im not realy making mistakes i can identify so prehaps i should start sticking with fortresses
One day something wity and original will appear here

Try a Dwarven Public Works Project. Like taking water from a river to a tower, taking it to the top of the tower, then letting it spill off one side into a pit all the way to the bottom of the map, passing your barracks, meeting hall, hospital, dining area, and such on the way down so as to give everyone pleasant thoughts whenever they go idle/spar/lay there dying/whatever.

Make sure the water recycles itself, so add in a floodgate from the river so you can shut it off if need be, and use waterwheels to make it self-powering.

I just had an awesome adventure! I annihilated what was left of the elf capital by my other character, killed the Bowman that killed him for an actual quest, then I set out to go find my old fortress. Not only did I find it, I found some migrants along the way who turned out to be the actual population from the fortress when I abandoned it. I recruited the four military dwarves that were left and took them to the fortress, looting all the artifacts and killing the leftover goblins. Also, along the way to the fortress, before I met the migrants, I nearly got killed by a giant scorpion that took out my right eye, making my character even cooler. Then I retired in a human forest retreat captured from the elves because that was too awesome not to save.

How do you kill elves, or any "good" races? I bump into them to no avail.

Also I freed two elf children only to be unable to find their homes. Then they were killed by a Unique Sasquatch that I had to kill for a quest.

Sigh.

I think I'm going to take another stab at the game. I just grew bored with my fortress, seeing as I had made one (In my eyes, at least) epic project and a legendary dining room with the colours laid out to resemble my country's flag. I was in the middle of building a tower, but the tediousness stopped me. It should be easier in the new version, though, and I never had magma or sand, either...

I think it'd be fun to see how big of a family tree the dwarves can get, though. I was on my 3th generation in my fortress (still got the save file).

Question: I remember someone talking about editing the dwarves nicknames to say how they died, but it's impossible to change it when they're already dead. Or am I wrong?

Also, why are the Fortress and Royal Guard so useless? Argh!

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out. Had to scroll aaaall the way down in the unit list. I couldn't identify a corpse that's lying on top of my tower, though - The same seems goblinish, but I have no idea how he'd gotten up there, save for climbing the rock wall.
I'm a wizard. We know these things.

In war, one should seek to take and hold the high ground. From there, the enemy's movements are clearly visible, and he will struggle just to reach you, let alone fight you. High orbit is the highest ground there is.

If other people are interested in trying another succession game, I'd gladly join in. Azrael, that fortress was doomed before you ever got it. Even if you had made it past the BC, there was an all-noble migration and a 50-80 goblin siege waiting for you. Succession games are more fun when they're going horribly wrong anyhow.

I haven't lost yet.
I didn't bother to pick what I started with so it may disadvantage me.

So far I have:
-Dug an underground lair
-Dug through flashing blue blocks near some blue 7
-Hastily abandoned an underground lair
-Dug into the side of a mountain
-Started farming, crafting shell things, mining olivine and some platinum
-Beginning to lack wood
-Found red sand.
-Open plan lair.

A few questions:
Where can I get leather?
Why won't my kennels build :(?
When do I get new dwarves?

Congratulations, you are already doing better than me!
To get leather you need a tannery, some animal skins and a dwarf with the tanning skill turned on.
Your kennels might not be building because you don't have the dwarf with the necessary skill, check what skill it needs at the kennels, I can't remember what button it is off the top of my head.
New dwarves come in immigration waves, usually during spring I think, but they can be during any season.

I doubt i'm doing better.
For one I have no defence, and two I dunno if I'll survive winter... don't know if I have plump helmet seeds as I have no seed bag. (Not cooking them though, no kitchen as of yet.)

EDIT-
Survived winter but then dug a misplaced channel and flooded my furnace and farm floor, luckily however it is all 2s and 1s deep, and has 2 floors under it with nothing in so it will eventually be safe, although i connected it to sio many lakes in the winter :(

Oh well new farmland ahoy.

EDIT 2-
Haha fuck you water, hastily rushed in floodgate saves the day and as I had tried to channel all the water into my first underground attempt earlier my dwarf on the wrong floodgate side got out to safety :D
Very addictive.

Anyone know how long it takes for the King to arrive at your fortress after you've fulfilled the initial demands?

Anyway, I've discovered the costs and gains of building a fortress in a Haunted area.

Cost: Building the road, constantly sending out squads to beat the skeletal mountain goats harassing my workers.
Gain: The sight of a goblin squad ambushing three goats. The haunts ganged up on the leader, killed him, and sent the rest fleeing to the border. Awesome :D

That reminds me, is Toady ever planning to tone down piercing damage? It's like organ-destroying instant death, regardless of your skill level. *Recalls many grim deaths in adventure mode while trying to implement the Final Elven Solution*

Probably not (anytime soon), because getting shot by a crossbow is organ destroying piercing death. It's not so much tone down the piercing damage as ramp up the others, I'd say.

How much pressure does water have to have before it starts shooting out of your wells? Is it just one level, or does it have to drop a bit more before it starts to come up again like that? I know you can do tricks with pumps or reservoirs, but I'd rather avoid that if I can.

ETA: I just got an idea for a goblin trap: is water contained by raised drawbridges? If it is, I can wall up the main entrance to my fort and flood it, then let the water out via drawbridge. Also, do/how long does it take goblins to break down doors/floodgates?

Out of curiosity, what kind of defences do other players use?

I usually dig into the side of a mountain, remove the ramps on a that part of the mountain and dig a moat with a drawbridge. Behind the moat I build walls to stop bolts. Sometimes I build walls on top of the mountain as well but they can be destroyed so I prefer to remove the ramps. I usually also build an underground tunnel that is a way around my moat. This tunnel is rotten with traps and has a siege engine with a legendary operator at the end.

I've gotten to where my depot is inside my fortress. As I put a meeting area there as well, think of that as the entrance checkpoint. Going out from there is a twisting path (at least two 180 degree turns) that's three tiles wide so wagons can get in and out, often with stone-drop, cage or weapon traps along the way as my last line of defense. When you hit sky, I have another set of constructed walls making another 3 tile wide path that's covered in traps and usually has a turn or two in it so that there's not a direct line-of-fire from the entrance to the start of the deathpath.

Reason being - if I set my dwarves to stay inside, they still like to run right up to where the ceiling stops. If there's goblins or whatever attacking there, my dwarves tend to get screwed up or whatever, moreso if there are crossbow/archer enemies. This way, they stay out of the line of fire and most of the time, the enemy doesn't make it inside to the inner deathpath.

I use cagetraps if I've got lots of nickel and lead to burn and an aquifer/river to work with. Then I build a deathpool. (Make a pit, put a hatch on the bottom, make the area where the hatch goes absolutely huge and empty, link to lever elsewhere, seal off all entrances, fill with water, dump goblins inside, wait, pull lever, collect bodies and items from below the pit, water evaporates.)

I read people talking about this game and it makes me want to play.

Then I play, and I get annoyed/bored with it.

You need to set yourself some goals. E.g. build an extreme defence with legendary siege operators. Or try building a 25 level high tower. Getting the right starting maps also helps. Magma makes for a lot more fun if you also have flux. If you have sand and magma, try building a glass skyscraper for your dwarves to live in. Or try training up your dwarves to have as many skills as possible. The possibilities are endless.
