Actually, Beatmania is a "DJ simulator" where you play music with a little 5 or 7-key keyboard and a turntable. It has absolutely nothing to do with real DJing, but it's still my favorite game series out there.

There's a simple little drum game out for the PS2 called Taiko: Drum Master. There's also DrumMania, which might be what Sandry was refering to. I think it's pretty fun. Probably one of the more realistic out of all of the music simulation games out there.

I got to play GH with a bunch of my family last night. It was only my second time playing, but I'm pretty evenly matched with my cousin who has been playing it since it first came out. I'm surprised that I can pass a good amount of expert songs.

Hm... I love music games. I'm pretty good at some of them too. So far I've played...

Stepmania (expert)
DDR (expert)
ITG (expert)
Beatmania - (basic 5 and 7 key)
Dj Max - (Pro Dj [Virtually Medium level])
Guiatar Hero - (expert)
Pop 'n' Music - (medium)
Pump It Up - (light to medium)

I'm looking to try the drum game, and Dance Maniax (i believe thats the name). Both look fun ^^;

I've beaten every song on expert in GHII, spare for Free Bird. It's a quality party game, and (obviously) has good solo gameplay as well.

Every song? Even Jordan? Because that's nigh on impossible. I have however beaten Free Bird on expert. Just practice Solo Section I a lot until you can fake your way through it.

I think Jordan you can learn with time, but the song "six" is at least second hardest if not first hardest.

Well, no. Every mandatory song I've beaten.

Jordan is... kind of ridiculous. Free Bird I could do with a couple days of practice, but it's not worth enduring the 10 minute intro that many times.

Greatest game. Ever. Period.
Though, it takes a week of playing to get to hard, real guitars take years. It's all fun and games!

Even if I get the ripping solo down at the end, having to back out into career mode and then start the song over from the beginning is too long. In the half-an-hour it takes to get to the solo, my fingers tense up and I need to warm up again with some Hangar 18 or (miserably failed) Jordan attempts.

I've gotten to the point where I can beat Six no problem and it's probably my favorite song in the game now <3

And... it's not so much learning Jordan as it is having fast enough fingers for the solo. Or getting real lucky. Or both.

And practice schmactice.

Re: it makes idiots think they can play...

I have a friend who is, in fact, an excellent bassist, who also happens to be freaking obsessed with the game. He nearly died when they said there'd be bassline support in GHII, and then nearly died AGAIN when they announced GHIII (he's a bit of a spaz.)

But he's still an excellent bassist, and I think one of the reasons he's so damn good at the game is that he understands rythem very well. That and his fingers are used to that sort of thing.

Me, I suck at it. I can only play on easy, partly becuase I can't keep a beat to save my life, and partly becuase I'm missing a few tendons in my ring and pinkie fingers of my right hand and thus can't hit the frets fast enough becuase my fingers do not work that way.

Just got done playing. Can't wait until 80s edition comes out this summer. What I would really love is an acoustic rock edition. Either way, I hope they keep doing low-priced expansion packs for PS2.

haha. It was hilarious at the party on friday... I haven't played much and the guy who brought it to the party kept encouraging people to play on way too high levels particularly after getting drunk >.< I failed on hard a quite a few times.

80s will be a PS2 exclusive (although most people expect that the songs will make their way to Xbox 360 as downloads). GH3 will be multi-platform; don't know if that will include PS2, but I expect so.

I spent a good two hours today playing GH2 at my dad's. For my first time playing ever, I wasn't half bad. He is still better than me. How upset by that should I be, or not at all?

Well if he's played it before then you'd usually expect him to be better than you... Once you can pass most songs on medium you generally wont be laughed at, so like... whatever :P

I personally like Guitar Hero. I haven't bought it (yet), but I got mildly good at it at Best Buy, so that gave me a little self-esteem boost. It's odd to be angry with it because it's no substitute for a guitar(I think), but I don't think it's supposed to be a guitar replacement, or even a guitar sim (that would be more like the electric guitar, I suppose...) it's just a guitar-themed rythm game, meant for fun.
On a side note: I've played Guitar Hero, several DDR games, The japanese version of Elite Beat Agents (in the Japanese version you fight a giant blue mouse!), a drum game, a japanese-style drum game, and a japanese game with about seven buttons that aren't all different colours. (failed miserably at that.)

Yeah, but he's my dad.

Also, the other day this guy I know did some cheat and the game went really really fast. A) What is that? B) Can any of you play the game going that fast, because it just gave me a headache.

Sounds like he put in the Hyper Speed cheat. I find that on some songs, it's actually easier to play it like that because even though it goes fast, it also spreads the notes a little farther apart.
This is the end of the post.

I've never played the hyperspeed "cheat" but as I understand it, it gives you half the response time, which can be good or bad, depending how far ahead you read notes. Also, on some of the more complicated songs it means you only get the notes you can handle instead of an evil mess of notes flying at you. There's quite the debate as to whether it's considered cheating. The really fun cheat is performance mode.

bigglesworth wrote:Will they be on PS2? Because while it's good, it's not good enough for me to spend 400 quid on.

Erm... what else would they be on? Guitar Hero is simple and staying simple and on PS2 (though also going cross platform). The next gen stuff is going to be Rock Band, which'll cost $200 to get a fully kitted out game (two guitars, drumkit, microphone and the game) and is definitely on the PS3 and 360, though I haven't checked if there's any word as to the wii.

That said, there is supposed to be guitar hero for the DS

Activision purchased GH publisher Red Octane and the rights to the Guitar Hero name. They will release GH3. It will likely be released on PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. (EDIT: Also DS, but it will be quite a different game, of course.)

Viacom purchased GH developer Harmonix. They will release Rock Band. It will likely be release only for PS3 and Xbox 360, but Wii is also possible.

The two lines are totally seperate now.

They are but Guitar Hero is now in the hands of neverSoft, who are reasonably competent and should be able to make a decent game (keep in mind that some of the Tony Hawk games had fantastic soundtracks, albeit geared towards skaters). As such, the guitar hero formula should stay true and will do much like new tony hawk games, essentially serving as expansion packs to something you already know if you like or not.

Rock Band will be done by Harmonix, who we know cannot fail when it comes to rhythm games. More to the point, they now have the power of Grayskull (by which i mean Viacom and MTV) so they can now get masters of just about any music they could ever want, except Led Zeppelin. Of course, we can only hope they keep the cover of search and destroy

In an hour I'm leaving to meet up with a friend, and after we eat we're heading to a bar.

We are going to play Guitar Hero at this bar.

I am bringing my custom (read: drawn on by a friend) wireless guitar controller and I'm going to RAWK THE FUCK OUT. There'll be free booze.

I am doing this instead of playing a real guitar because I don't have the time to learn it and also I tried once and it really hurt.

Donkey Konga?

No, that would be Percussion freaks or Drum mania depending on where you live.

EDIT:
I see a lot of misnamings in this thread. These are all the bemani games (those by konami):

Keyboardmania: keyboard sim
Guitarfreaks: guitar sim, similar to GH but Guitarfreaks was first
Beatmania: the first bemani game, 5 keys and a turntable
Beatmania IIDX: the same game but 7 keys and turntable
Pop'n music: 9 big buttons (look it up, is fun to play)
Dance Dance Revolution: dance game with 4 arrows
DDR solo: the same but with 6 arrows, only 3 games were made
Drummania: drum simulator (semi-accurate to the actual instrument)
ParaPara Paradise: simulator for a typical japanese dancestyle, 5 sensors for your arms.
DanceManiax: 4 sensors, somewhat like PPP but the set-up is different
Pop'n stage: one-off game that combines Pop'n music with DDR

I hope I didn't miss any.

I just played GH in a store a couple days ago for the first time! I only got 3 songs in, but I wanted to do two more -- Trogdor, then Sweet Child of Mine on medium, because that's got one of the best guitar parts ever and it was too easy on easy. ;-)

I like guitar hero although I've only played it twice. People who get all pissy cause 'Oh me yarm it's not a REAL guitar' are rather silly in my eyes.

I prefer GH to DDR since I can't handle moving my feet like that. But I can handle the button pressing.

I'm also trying to learn to play real guitar. I can strum a few songs, but I can't really play chords yet :(

I hope to get a wii some day, and that will totally happen if GH or similar game is available with the wii. (right now I want a wii just so I can play WarioWare >.>)

I play Guitar Hero, and I have no illusions about my skill as a guitarist whatsoever. I suck at the real thing.

GH is more like air guitar. You're listening to that cool song, and you want to try a Pete Townshend-style windmill strum and dance about like a fool in the privacy of your own room. It's the same thing that inspires me to puff my lips out and prance like Mick Jagger whenever I listen to "Jumping Jack Flash."
