If you've ever played Half-life or Half-life 2, I strongly recommend you look up "Freeman's Mind" on YouTube. Friggin' hilarious (he basically plays Freeman as a sort of crazy genius psychopath). Even if you haven't, it's probably still decently funny, but it's obviously better if you've played before.

Does anyone know of a good city building/management game? Stuff like Tropico 4, Anno 1404/2070 or the older Settlers? Combat is not preferential

Try one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Building_Series

I've played Caesar III and Pharaoh and think they are really good.

I've already played pretty much all of those, but thanks anyway. I'll guess I'll just wait a while and see if Banished will be any good.

As a fan of Metroid, I kinda want to check out the other half of that genre with Castlevania - has anyone got a recommendation on where to start? As far as consoles go, I have all the Nintendo handhelds (that includes access to the 3DS virtual store), and I really don't care about graphics.

Edit: I've now played Valdis Story on that recommendation, and while it was kinda fun, I think I like the Metroid series for reasons other than the genre.

I am not a big fan of those. They usually have a lot of enemies that you need to kill in a largely flat room, it's incredibly boring. However, I know Symphony of the Night has a large following so I would start with there if you are interested in it.

I can second SotN. It is actually one of the most entertaining games I think I've ever played.

Steam has a couple Metroid/Castlevania themed games that look fairly cool. I bought Valdis Story but haven't checked it out yet.

Bump for a recommendation;

I'm finding that I really enjoy 'resource building/management' games, like Anno, but dislike sandbox-y things, like Minecraft/Terraria. Something like EVE Online's industry/mining. Any recommendations that might fit the bill?

Hmm. There's this thing on Steam called Fate of the World that I found a bit diverting, but even on sale it's priced at more than I think it is worth.

Crusader Kings II.

But while it's an utterly brilliant game, it's kinda hard to get myself psyched up enough to play. Takes a lot of brainpower for someone like me.

Yeah had a similar feeling over Christmas time. Not really much new and exciting that caught my eye lately. Was playing Star Trek Online for a bit, though it got pretty repetitive. Currently playing Path of Exile until the D3 expansion (or something else catches my eye). Hadn't played it before so its kinda neat.

Playing FF14 A Realm Reborn. Its destroying my poor overclocked 3.3 ghz CPU, but its pretty and somewhat entertaining, although I wish they brought in some features from Rift.

I just looked that over lastnight, and was completely turned off to see healers have what amounts to 5-6 healing spells. What are your impressions?

Just finished Saints Row IV. Been playing Dungeons of Dredmor and Dark Souls right now. I really like Dark Souls, but have a hard time with starting a character, then not playing for a while, and forgetting what it was. Like I think I've started 2-3 guys that were supposed to use miracles, then come back 4 months later, and just do whatever I feel like at the time. I really need to do a STR/DEX build. Which I may have - I don't know. Played one guy last night that would be at Four Kings, except I apparently haven't done Artorias yet, so don't have the ring.

All of this is getting me impatient for Dark Souls 2. I have it pre-ordered, and was considering taking a day off work - except I can't plan that, as last time I was supposed to get something release day(a book) from Amazon, it was 4-5 days late. And the book got spoiled for me.

RE FF14: Ive only really played Pugilist(Monk) class. I have maybe 30-40 hours in game atm. There are parts of it that I really enjoy, like crafting. Crafting is both fun and extremely frustrating, the mini game for crafting can be fun, but the item management, and creating of base item pieces is headdesk boring.

For example there might be an item you want to craft, you need 3 copper bars for it. Your out of them, so you have to buy/mine 6 copper and then individually make the bars, then do the same for any other sub mats and then craft. For every single item you craft you have to follow the same steps. Now after say 10 levels there is a quick craft, but its really just automated, its by no means fast. So in short, its fun to make a new hard item, but the grind can get old.

I still need to try combat with a controller vs a keyboard/mouse, but as a monk positioning(sides, back) is key to my dps rotation....the problem is when solo a mob is always turning towards me so i have to essentially fight while running in a circle. In a dungeon I dont have to worry as there is a tank, but solo its annoying to run and hit keys on a keyboard to use my abilities. But like I said, i need to try a controller.

So far the community is good, ive only had 1 troll group out of like 10 that Ive joined for dungeons. Dugeons start out really basic and get more complex as you go on, the only issue I have found is being new, I want to watch the cut scenes, but sometimes groups dont want to wait, even though the games lets them know you are new there. So then you get locked out of a boss fight.

I enjoy that you have no limit on the number of jobs either combat or crafting or gathering you want. I started them all and the only issue I had was my inventory for main hand item almost filled up. Oh yea, this part is cool. In addition to a main inventory of 80-100, you have a bank of 175 slots, and then each gear slot has its own separate bag for items, it can hold maybe 20 items for that gear slot. That part is kinda nice for space management.

That seems interesting; you mean advancement is like TSW, wherein a single character can do everything?

Idk what TSW is, but I can level a Gladiator, Maruader, Monk, Scholar, Archer, Goldsmith, Miner, Botanist, Alchemist, Leatherworker etc, to 50 if I wanted to take the time. Now having said that your class must be static while in a dungeon or raid. You can swap around before hand, but not during.

Yeah, interesting! So you don't have to keep rerolling to try different classes/jobs. You can play for two weeks as a gladiator, then switch to a scholar, then to a goldsmith? So there's no reason to get alt-itus?

I may have to give this a try.

Indeed, the only issue is your patience as it takes similarly long to level each class.

Scholar is like a smaller heals, HoT class. Bard I think has some kind of aoe buffs. Im really not sure about other classes as I havent gotten to far yet.

How do you feel the depth is compared to a game like WoW? I'm worried it's got a bit of a Tera vibe which is to say, all Archers are the same and use the same 5 skills.

I dont know much about end game yet, but I think most classes will end up having BiS gear and a best rotation with a little big of rotation customization based on what you are needed to do.

The variety in abilities comes with what cross class skills you pick, but again I think there is definitely a best set of skills/rotation per class.

This is a little late, but I would recommend Aria of Sorrow for the GBA and Dawn of Sorrow for the DS. Dawn is a direct sequel to Aria, so if you care about the story you'll have to play them in order. I'd say Aria is the better of the two; Dawn tried to add some touchscreen features, but it just wound up being annoying.

Not late at all :) I'll look into Aria, GBA for some reason seems better than DS for this kind of game anyway, to me.

Oh, and I did check out Valdis Story on the recommendations - while the gameplay was fun, there were a couple of things I really didn't like (a few frustrating features and the abysmal story), but overall a good call. Thanks!

This is pretty much the case. There is, for the most part, a "best in slot" for each class, both when it comes to gear and cross-class skills. FFXIV doesn't really go out of its way to try to make characters different, only the people who play them.

In some sense, that actually makes it more focused on player skill - when everyone has the same gear, the people who are better at making use of the tools available to them will perform better. On the other hand, it leaves a little less variety for those who like to play around with variations.

Also far as support classes go, the only ones that are really "pure" support are the healers - White Mage and Scholar. White Mage is the "straightforward but powerful" healer with straightforward big heals; Scholar is the "versatile" healer with a shield and HoT focus - they also have a pet for further utility.

Bards have a couple of songs they can play to buff their group, but they're primarily a DPS class first, support second. Most of the other DPS classes have team synergy abilities as well, though less blatant (e.g. one of their attacks might apply a debuff for a particular damage type that other team members use as well).

I can't be bothered to look through the whole thread (sorry, it's long!), so I hope someone will come along and take pity on me. I just got the Tracfone Z665C phone. For those not familiar with it, it is a Android 4.1 OS phone on a pre-paid service plan. Super excited to finally have a "smart phone", even if it isn't quite as slick and fast as other, more expensive phones. Anyway, I am looking for games on it. Obviously I want the games to be free, because that's just who I am, and with the whole of the interblogs out there providing an almost infinite amount of free content, why should I pay?

Game requirements:
-Work on Android 4.1 phone
-I prefer RPGs reminiscent of FFIII(US), ChronoTrigger, Star Ocean, etc. Obviously I am a Square/Enix fan. But any 8 or 16 bit RPG will pique my interest.
-Does not require an internet connection. I have only a limited number of MBs to use (over the cell network), and so I leave my data disabled most of the time. I want something that is entirely housed on my phone. I don't want to PVP, or buy new items or boosts or quests or whatever. I don't want to post status updates to Facebook. I don't want in-game rewards for inviting friends. I don't want to visit a neighbour’s game to water their plants or whatever. I want an old-school console style RPG.
-Free. I don't mind games where I can buy upgrades, but they need to meet the "does not require internet" requirement above. I want to be able to play the game from anywhere, not just at a wifi hotspot or whatever.

I had hoped to run some Flash games, but it looks like Adobe Flash is no longer supported for Android 4.0+? I am new to the Android world, so I don't know what works and what doesn't.

I'm getting a new PC! With Windows 7! (I'm a diehard fan of trailing edge technology.)

Any recommendations for new games? Ones I have and like:
Skyrim (and Oblivion, and Morrowind)
Dragon Age 2 (and DA1, and the Neverwinters and Baldur's Gates)
Might and Magic, and the Heroes Of, various up to the death of 3DO/NWC
Also a few Civilization games, though I'm a bit tired of them

Thanksee.

Seems like you're into RPGs, so I'll recommend Fallout: New Vegas, Deus Ex (the first or Human Revolution), Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect series. They're pretty much the best ones out there from what I've played :)
