We live a few thousand miles apart so shared keyboard won't really do it. Are there any roguelikes with an online co-op mode though? That would be an interesting genre to try out.

Any good dworf fortress like games that are more put together than DF but with similar depth of content?

Have you played Rimworld? I've seen it streamed a handful of times, and it looks really interesting. I haven't tried it myself though.

There's a number of DF-ish games but I've never seen anything which comes even close for depth of content and I'm not sure anything else is likely to at this point without a really massive budget and a lot of time.

i have played rimworld, and it has good polish, but very limited content. the dev is active on /r/rimworld and is adding stuff frequently at least.

I need a game that can be played casually multiplayer, 1v1 or COOP - but with one person having a PC and the other a macbook.

Good shout!

Oh, also I phrased it a bit awkwardly in my last post - I'm fine with the game not being very casual if it's COOP or 1v1, it's just if you're expected to play with 6 other people that I need it to be casual.

Apparently borderlands 2 co-op is cross-platform. I read that you need to make sure you get the steam version, not the mac appstore version - the appstore version doesn't have cross-platform multiplayer.

The mention of Portal 2 reminded me that I need a game recommendation as well - I'm looking for puzzle-platformers that are more "physicsy" and have entirely self-consistent internal logic.

I'm looking for similar games to the portal series, the swapper, fez, limbo, the talos principle and especially antichamber (which is my favourite game ever). Basically I need something to tide me over until miegakure comes out.

I'm not looking for games that rely on guessing which one of several apparently viable solutions the developer wants you to take, so no point-and-click games or text adventures. Games that require too much in the way of hand-eye coordination rather than logic are also not great - the majority of the difficulty should come from thinking about how to achieve the solution, not from the timing of actually achieving that solution.

I've heard that SpaceChem and Infinifactory are good for that - 2D and 3D offerings by the same person.

I've got spacechem - and, yes, it's good and I should play it more (I'm currently stuck on how to get three cycles of one waldo per single cycle of the other). Thanks for suggesting Infinifactory - I didn't know about that one.

There are two ways to achieve resonance in SpaceChem - one of which is robust to uneven input (as in most multi-reactor setups) - you can carefully adjust the paths the two waldos follow or you can use the Sync command - for the latter, to get red to loop 3 times in the time blue loops once, have 3 blue Syncs in quick succession, and include a single red Sync.

As a free alternative, I'd suggest Manufactoria

There's also the codex of alchemical engineering, which was made by the same guy as spacechem, and provided the inspiration for it.

Chariot? It's best in co-op, and frankly husband and I found it tedious at later levels, but it's a good concept and might work for you. The biggest problem is the levels are soooooo long, like an hour for some levels, possibly more, and we just get tired of them and want to quit.

Oh, another fun game to co-op is HL2 - see http://store.steampowered.com/app/17520/

It plays quite differently with two people, especially the City 17 chapter. It's also exploitable because it still assumes the game is single-player.

Just in case you don't know, the current Humble Bundle is a bunch of co-op games. I have no idea if they meet the criteria, however.

Anything good on 3ds? I liked Braverly Default, am looking for more. Monster Hunter 4 seems promising, but I've generally felt let down by those games.

I've been happy with the Majora's Mask remake - though it does depend how you feel about Zelda games generally...

It all depends on what you like. There's not a lot that particularly resembles Bravely Default. Tales of the Abyss, maybe. Or Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Saga, though if you've already played previous games in the series and didn't care for them, it won't change your mind.

There's always the dungeon crawlers: Persona Q, Etrian Odyssey, and Shin Megami Tensei IV.

DOes anyone know a tower defense game with an actual story? I quite enjoyed Defender's Quest but most others TDs don't really have proper stories and while I like playing TDs I also like having stories in between gameplay. So does anyone know another TD that fits the bill?

Hmm...definitely much lighter on story than Defender's Quest (which is what I was going to recommend until I saw that you meant "more like that"), but Defense Grid: The Awakening at least has an entertaining narrator and some attempt at world-building.

I saw an article last week about Boxboy on 3DS; looks like it's by HAL Laboratory (of original N64 Smash Bros fame) and is a sidescrolling puzzle platformer in the Mario vein, with some of the learning curve of Portal. If I had a 3DS I would definitely try it, so if you do, I'd be curious to hear if it's in fact good!

Games in the Gemcraft series have a (simple) story, though from what I remember the story is a lot heavier on setting the theme than on serious plot. Most story sequences can be summarized as "The villain is being evil, the protagonist and others oppose the villain, and here's a sentence or three about this level's aesthetics and gameplay mechanics, but written in a story-like way.". Also, the levels quickly get insanely time-consuming, which is the main reason why I quit the series the other year.

Yeah I know gemcraft, decent tds until your level snowballs and you can either play it in a boring ultra grindy way or just beat every level without effort. But the story is only perfunctory.

Can anyone recommend me an easy flight sim type game?
I'm not into hyperrealistic aerodynamic modeling or true to life plane specs and flight procedures, I just want to gently fly something around and admire some pretty views from above. Preferably without having to shoot anybody.
Also it would be very nice if I could control the plane fully with my keyboard and mouse; I don't want to buy a yoke and pedals, and I don't like joysticks/gamepads.

Thanks!
I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just right.

I now have a great computer with which I played DmC, but it got stale after a while. I liked its fighting mechanics but felt it lacked a bit of variety and depth. Maybe it's just me though. At any rate, short of actual fighting games (since I prefer single player), what good action games do you know?

Can anyone think of any other games with a good story that can be played multiplayer? Something like Borderlands or Synergy for HL2. Ideally not expensive, and it doesn't have to be an FPS.

A lot of the Tales games are multiplayer in the battles - that is, the first player controls the game normally, but whenever you get in a battle, two (or sometimes more) people can control the different characters. Makes the game a lot easier, I can tell you. ^_^

I also just found that Freespace 2 can be played co-op as well, and I like how the story is tied into stuff objectives that are designed to be failed. Might try that with friends.

If you're willing to really go elsewhere genre-wise, Divinity: Original Sin can be played as 2-person coop and is an isometric RPG with a pretty decent story.

I've been looking for things to play while listening to podcasts, and a friend recommended I play roguelikes. My go-to one for a while has been The Binding Of Isaac, but while I enjoy the mechanics on that, I really don't like the visual style, and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a 'cute' roguelike - preferably real-time/action-based. Bonus points if there's a pacifist one out there somewhere :)

Other ones which come to mind that I've played and enjoyed include Rogue Legacy and Roguelight - main problem with those two for this purpose is that I didn't really feel compelled to play more once I'd finished them.

FTL: Faster Than Light is a roguelike in space.

Desktop Dungeons is a quick roguelike, with successful runs taking 10-15 minutes, but it's probably a bit too thinky for something to multitask with - winning comes down to a mix of luck and careful calculation - timing level-gains to heal in the middle of a tough fight, and rationing your unexplored tiles carefully...
