Timed Exploding Base Ending

Postby Joeldi » Thu Jun 19, 2008 1:37 pm UTC

I've just realised how cliche'd the get the fuck out of the base before it explodes ending has become. Games I can think off the top of my head that use it:

Spiderman (2001 PC game)
Spoiler:
Actually, you're running away from a giant, Carnage-infused Doc Ock, but the gameplay is the same

Metroid
Super Metroid
Metroid Prime
Metriod Prime 2
I assume every other metroid game but I haven't played them.
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid

How many hundreds more have I missed?

Well there is the old Descent games. I think every level ended in "get the fuck out before the shit hits the fan"

I don't recall if that carried over to #2 or #3, but yeah, it was like that in #1.

That was basically the premise of the games, wasn't it? "Go into this asteroid and blow it up from inside"?

Well, it was that the mining drones had all gone bad, so you had to fly in and blow up the reactor.

.. So yeah.

But no matter how much time you had left on the clock, the ending animation was always your ship flying just ahead of the explosions and escaping just in time. Even if you had a minute twenty on the clock, which was more than enough time to leisurely fly down the escape tunnel, stop and smell the roses along the way, wonder how the hell roses were growing in an environment without sunlight, water, or air, then continue on your merry way before the thing blew.

Perhaps the clock was wrong? I came to love that animation anyway. Playing that as a kid, it was so incredibly confusing, disorienting and scary that being able to finish a level was an incredibly joyful event, tempered only by the fact that I knew a new one was coming up.

Halo had this too, although it wasn't a base, it was
Spoiler:
Your own ship/Halo itself.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire on the N64, I think, had this ending.

I believe this preceded Descent by a couple of years:
Air Fortress

Wow, that's been a while.

Xenosaga episode I

Spoiler:
Except they did a somewhat humorous twist on it, in that you get out of the space station just in time, but your angle of reentry is way to steep and you start to burn up in the atmosphere

Rogue Squadron 2 had you out running the exploding Death Star, and I think Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow had something very similar
Spoiler:
There definitely was a time bomb, and I think you had to carry it outside the airport?

And Wind Waker didn't have a timer right? But it would have made sense too, what with the room you were in being flooded rather quickly.

You don't need an apostrophe in clichéd/cliched. Still, at least you didn't use "cliche" as an adjective (as in "That scene was so cliche!") which is one of my pet hates on the internet! :)

Anyway, on topic:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, although it's automatic and part of the end sequence, rather than you being in control (~1:08 in that video).

Eh, I was trying to emulate the..(um, accent? dash thing anyway) because I can never remember all of those alt-codes.

How did I forget this one before‽

Cave Story

Also, X-Men 2: Clone Wars for the Genesis. It wasn't at the ending of the game (or maybe there was another at the end), but one level does have an exploding base part.

Well, sometimes. My earlier example, Halo, didn't have a load bearing boss but did have the timed base escape.

Halo 3 does it in a slightly less cheesy way: there's no clock timer, but you need to get through each part before it collapses.

Okami had a good one. Without getting into details, stuff was falling everywhere, all the time. The timer was getting out before the damage killed you. That, or I just didn't see the timer in the corner. I forget.

My brother and I used to have ajoke about Kyle Katarn of Jedi Knight fame, that every building he walked into would explode violently at some point.

It was true, too.
