Fluxx - Making Fluxx Cards

Postby Pit » Thu Dec 11, 2008 2:16 am UTC

So for Christmas, I'm making a deck of fluxx cards for a very good friend of mine. For those who don't know what Fluxx is, here is the site: Fluxx, Long story short, it's a game of ever changing rules.

I've bought about 20 blanxx sets of cards, which means I have 20 Action Cards, 20 Rule Cards, 20 Keeper Cards, 20 Goal Cards and 20 Creeper Cards.

Pretty much, I need ideas to fill this new deck of Fluxx. For whatever reason, I'm having an imagination block. I don't know how many of you guys play Fluxx, but there have been people mentioning it (Monty Python Fluxx just came out!) and I'm a really big fan of the Looney Lab games.

I'm mostly looking for action and rule suggestions (and images), although Keeper/Goal/Creeper suggestions are accepted!

If you guys could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a copy of the original fluxx (3.1) after playing it at uni a few years ago. I dont' have creeper cards! Find something your friend likes and base it off of that. You could try to relate it to a TV series (House Fluxx! It might be lupus!) or something like that.

Basic Rule
- Stupid Complex -
Read this card aloud.
Play Order Shifts to The Oldest Player First Based on Year. If there are ties based on the year, Play Order is arranged based on birth month in alphabetical, not chronological order. If there are ties based on month, Play Order is arranged based on even days going first, odd days second. If there is a tie for even/odd days, play is shifted based on lowest common denominator. If there is a tie for LCD or there are prime numbers involved, play order is based on the actual day of birth in order from greatest (31st) to least (1st).
Pause here.
If anyone said "What the fuck?" remove this card from play.

Action
- You! Take a Shot! -
Name another player at the table. That player must immediately take a drink. The named player is allowed to steal someone else's drink. If they are unable to do so (such as not having a drink), you have another turn.

@Gowerly ~ Creeper cards came out during Zombie Fluxx, which he does have a copy of. And thanks for the suggestion~ (he's not a particular fan of House, but he does like alcohol).

@SecondTalon ~ Thank you (possible inspiration to create Drunken Fluxx hm...)

Well, with all those blank cards, you could easily make a drinking conversion. That's the first one
(ideas such as keepers: shot, beer, wine, rules like "take a drink - when you start your turn drink", actions like "assign a drink" or "Everyone drinks", goals like "wine and dine", "buy a round" or "hard liquor")

other ideas... if it's being included with regular fluxx... make another x=x+1 (so you can have 2) then make people figure out what happens if you have 2.

you could make xkcd themed, with keepers like "Black hat man", creepers like "raptors"
Not sure on rules or actions...

"Godwin's Law" (New Rule)
At the beginning of each player's turn, after any cards are drawn but before any cards are played, that player must roll a standard (six-sided) die. Any player who rolls a six must immediately discard his or her hand and all keepers.

I think I've been inspired to make an XKCD fluxx for my friend.

Edit - this is a raptor creeper (if you can't tell)

I've been working on a lot of ideas (xkcd creepers and keepers.. and goals, ways to mix my deck with the main deck, drinking ideas).

I'm still looking for a lot of action cards (see? I have no imagination whatsoever), so anything would be really great and helpful! The more odd/geeky/xkcd references, the better!

I realize it's after Christmas, but I'll share with you a few cards we've had fun with. Any text with numerals is intended to be affected by Inflation.

Rules:
Stasis: No new rules can come into play while this card is down (obvious MtG-jack)
Uno (substitute for Play X): Each turn, you must play until you have 1 card left in your hand
Stealth Mode: Players may choose to turn over all their keepers in play. To play a new keeper, each player must first show it to everyone before playing it face down. Players may not change the order of their keepers. Any trash/exchange keeper cards must be played without revealing keepers. Any player may look at their own keepers at any time.

Actions:
One man's trash: Pick 1 card at random for any other player's hand. Give them 1 card of your choice from your hand (this may include the card you just received).
Rags to Riches: Exchange the deck and the discard piles. Do not shuffle either.

Keepers:
Cheese
Taxes

Goals:
MTV: Rocket and the Moon (Get it?)
Certainties: Death and Taxes
Schools get 1%: War and Taxes
Where it goes: Money and Taxes
Nightmares: Dreams and Taxes
Midnight Mythos: Moon and Cheese
Artist's sandwich: Bread and Cheese
Thank you, cows: Milk and Cheese
Turophile: Love and Cheese

I wanted to do "Ween: Chocolate and Cheese" but the eventual goal is to round out the deck. Every keeper is displayed on two goal cards (excluding the non-double-keeper cards) except chocolate, which is on four. What's up with that?

Anyhow, that's enough of 'em for now.

I've used the Keeper Cheese on my own blanxx. I made two goals -- The Cheese Stands Alone, which is cheese only-- like All You Need is Love; I also made SunDried Nachos, which is cheese and The Sun.

I don't remember most of the others I made though... let me think.
Actions:
The 1920s: Draw 7 Cards. You lose in two turns (provided you don't win first).
Crown Prince: Similar to Rotate Hands-- you rotate hands, but if you don't like the hand you get, you can swap the other direction instead.

Clever Goal:
6 Goals In Hand: There's 10 cards in hand, sure, but this one is a clever take on the absolute evil that is having a lot of goals ALL THE TIME.

Rules:
Midlife Crisis: Reverses the effects of goals. If you win, you lose; if you lose, you win! Although corrupt and badly in need of refining, this adds extreme paranoia -- instead of waiting for an opponent to draw that one keeper they need, you wait for them to draw a goal that can kill you.
Socialism: Imposes a draw limit of 4 cards per turn. Any cards you draw more than that are given to the opposing player of your choice. OPTIONALLY: This includes all rule or action draws in a full hand rotation -- that is, if you draw four cards in your hand, and then your opponent plays Everybody Gets 1, you have to give your card to someone else. Naturally, they'll have to give their card to you if they're in the same position..

I'm trying to think up some more xkcd [forum] themed ones.. How about:

Action - Otter/Duck Discard the current goal [would also work as a goal in itself: the one person with an otter keeper wins?]
Creeper - The troll The troll is hungry
Un-goal - Feeding the trolls Everyone loses if one person has both the troll, and any comestible foodstuff
Rule - hazing the newguy The youngest player subtracts the difference between his age and the next oldest player's age [rounded up to the nearest whole number] from every rule card. If this makes playing impossible, then the youngest player is only allowed to take a turn when the oldest player says so.
Action - RG brings the fleeting! All new rules are removed. Permanently. From a cannon. Into the sun.
Action - Someone is wrong on the internet! A rule or goal of the players choice can be modified in some way, eg, Play four cards? I think you'll find that means wave two cards around, give one to me, and only play ONE card unless it's my go

Keeper - The Dress, combined with a few Keepers of famous historical men, and appropriate goals such as "Epic Machismo: The player who has both Teddy Roosevelt and The Dress wins."

Thanks guys. I'm still not done with the whole deck. I'm playing around with ideas, and I did buy a lot of cards. If you have any more, keep them coming!

Here's one of the custom cards I've made that was the most fun to play with:
