ARG get

Postby Schmendreck » Tue Jan 13, 2009 2:38 am UTC

For a little while I have been becoming obsessed with ARGs. I recently got the idea of starting one and running it. However, everything i have seen has indicated that it is a large task not well suited for one person. In conclusion I was wondering if any one was interested in collaborating on a project like this.

I consider myself a moderately aware gamer, but what is an ARG? An alternate reality game?

Yea. The wikipedia article describes them much better than i do.

Often they are run by companies and are the equivalent of "drink teh ovalteens". But they are essentially a set of puzzles related to a story.

I once helped run an ARG. It's a... complicated process. Preparation in advance is key but you can't have a too rigid plan because your players can and will go outside the bounds of what you thought they would do. Or even worse, are unable to follow the path you tried to set for them and just flop around in embarrassment.

I'm tempted to get into ARG'ing again but frankly it's pretty time consuming.

Thats why i want a group. To reduce the time necessary.

Oh, I definitely was in a group. Even with multiple people to separate the work it's difficult. Although we had some differing circumstances than typical ARG's I suppose.

Which one was it? Is there still stuff left around? I would really like to see the work of a fellow xkcd forumer.

If you want to see the work of a current (if not totally new) XKCD forumer, you can check out stuff that I've helped with. :P

* Thirteen Lights (on hiatus)
* Pastry Wars (a semi-joke ARG rife with inside jokes that don't make sense unless you've read through this ARG and associated threads)

Also, Schmendreck, if you'd like to get involved in creating/playing more ARGs, Unfiction is the place to be. If you need any help, PM me here on the fora or grab me as redct on the Unfiction fora. :)
