Help with Paranoia (Ultraviolet Clearance only!)

Postby clockworkmonk » Tue Oct 20, 2009 11:17 pm UTC

I recently agreed to GM a game of Paranoia, and have come to realize I don't have a good starting point. I'm aware of the basics, try and have the party at eachother's throats before the briefing through secret societies and publicly passed notes, but I'm having trouble deciding what inane mission Friend Computer should send them on. Any help would be appreciated.

Have them requisition the necessary paperwork to find out the location of the transit station that will take them to the briefing room for their first real mission.

You can make this take forever, if you want to.

It doesn't matter what the real mission is, because players will not care about it at all. Instead, get them to R&D and give them cool weapons. Hand out the Mandatory Bonus Duties and get them involved with that.

Have Friend Computer give them a call if they get too far off-course. They won't notice a railroad.

I heard an awesome story about a mission involving carrying a glass of water across a street. By the end of it, they had called in tankbot brigades and full Vulture squad protection for the entire sector.

I'm actually liking both of those ideas a lot. first, Friend computer sends them to R&D for the experimental equipment, then informs the party they must now requisition the necessary paperwork, which must be done on the red form, which is not available in this sector. Perfect, the mission for the paperwork.

Yea missions are secondary.

To make it even more interesting, have the requisition papers require blue clearance.

What you should spend time on is the secret society objectives. Give all the players a special mission regarding the main mission.

Make a copy of the requisition papers, change the papers, eat the papers, build a sand castle.

Paranoia I always found was most fun when it was player driven.

Ixtellor - Ulraviolet security Clearance.

P.S. The premade Mark V adventure is very fun.

Thanks for the help. I used a lot of the advice, and the blue forms got somone killed! they actually filled them out. I'm excited now, as it seems this will turn into a regular game. Well, I got some work to do.

Okay, I do not pretend to have ever played a meatspace RPG, but what about paperwork for the paperwork? That would give that extra "useless mission" mile.
Also, useless macguffins are good.

Paranoia is the only game I know of with a whole Character Gen Mechanic purely for the purposes of absolutely useless MacGuffins.

Well, I might work that into the next game. I did end up giving them a mission. The computer wanted them to remove the genes for red hair from all future clones, as reds are commies. I think my group might be a little too subtle at this point. I'm gonna have to condition them better next session. (Don't worry, the GM section of Paranoia has plenty of good advice for this. A lot of it can be used to train puppies too!)

And I did have fun with the missions. The Illuminati guy's real mission was to steal every other character's left shoe. that ended up funny. I think I'll make more missions like that.

I like giving secret society missions that either contradict or screw up other people's ss missions.

For example, player X has an SS mission to make sure player Y stays alive and healthy as the SS believe he is a sleeper agent for them in disguise, they must, however, not talk to him about this mission at all as it could cause his neural programming to cause him to self destruct. Under no circumstances must he leave player Y's side.

Player Y however has been given information from his/her SS that player X is spying on him and must lead him into as many dangerous situations as possible (if he dies in this duty his SS will of course pick up the tab for his used clones, if they remember where they put the paperwork).

Helpful in-game hint. When you are caught outside your clearance, blame someone else. or repaint the hall with a hose so it matches your clearance.

Props are key. It's important to make sure one or more players (but not all) have recording devices, preferably ones that can (with great difficulty and traps) be tampered with

Then, make sure players have sufficiently incriminating items (that can also be useful) from their secret society, such as "have you hugged a commie today?" pins, green blades of grass from outside (Oh me yarm, green security clearance!), a small can of white spraypaint (for the anarchist, super treasonous), etc. Illicit weapons are good too.

My favorite group moment was when I was GMing paranoia and one of the guys took out another by asking him (the team leader) to look closely at something (a have you hugged a commie today pin), video taping him holding it while examining it, then reporting him for treason to the computer (who promptly issued an execution warrant). The team leader promptly executed himself, and his clone came back one security clearance level higher. good times.

Troublesome R&D inventions are nice too. You always want to give some cool weapons, but some humorous or troublesome ones help much too. Powerful things that backfire, etc. Grenade Repulsion Device also -- (labelled 'louisville slugger'), etc. From R&D, I also like giving NPC robots they must escort who have some serious screws loose (and because they theoretically are 100% loyal to the computer can leave players in a tough spot if they try to boss the player around contrary to the mission or what the computer said).

But yes, in general, misdirecting the players through various contradictory, capricious high security clearance citizens, government agencies, rogue bots, and encounters with the computer in the course of some misguided objective that seems completely illogical is the way to go.

1) I am an old married man now, I play videogames very little and just recently started dabbling in WoW because all my RL friends play it off and on. Will check it out though.
Didn't you have another game.. shadow something?

2) Seriously, do Korean kids worship you?

3) You should post a bio in this section for much xkcd cred. They might not realize they have a minor celebrity on their hands.

4) Is it true you invented the reaver drop?

1) Oh okay. yes, I worked on Strifeshadow a LONG ass time ago. After that, War3 and Wow, then went to bschool, and now I'm at Riot, working on league of legends, which is similar to DotA and is now available for free (http://www.leagueoflegends.com).

2) Probably not anymore.

3) Uhh... I was the best protoss player in SC for 6-9 months then quit a little after brood war came out while I was getting my CS degree at MIT... Almost failed out, and got a gf, so I focused on designing games and passing class after that. These days,I design games for a living. That's about it really!

4) No, I just popularized the reaver drop. I may have invented some advanced templar/shuttle techniques, it's hard to say. Lots of good ideas get done simultaneously lots of places.
