Anyone else on the beta? I just activated and am ditching a party to go look for XM.

I don't have an android device but it would be pretty cool to play.

Yup, tons of Googlers play, obviously.

Just today, while out having lunch with my wife, an obvious Googler (Google jacket, standard-issue backpack they give you when you start) walked into the plaza of the place we were eating, pulled out his phone, messed with it for about a minute, then walked off. First time I've seen someone playing Ingress in the wild. ^_^

I just ran around Porter Square getting spanked by two portals (I'm still figuring this out). It felt neat, and I had to remind myself to pay attention to traffic (der).

Out of curiosity, can someone chime in about what sort of utility this game serves to Google? Data mining, obviously, on where people are and particularly where unique sites are in a given area, but how is that profitable?

Ah, interesting. They're recommending that portal suggestions be sites of interest, like interesting architecture, statues, murals, that sort of thing, so I wager there's going to be some sort of 'recommendation for cities walking paths' potential as well.

So, how does one get in on this action? Is it the usual Google gradual-rollout model of having users invite other users? And if so, should we have some kind of invite distribution thread going? And if so, can I get in on that?

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

I think it's free for android mobile devices. I don't have an android device though, so I wouldn't know... :-(

It's presently company invite only; put your name on the beta list and check this out.

My phone doesn't seem to work for Recruiting yet, so, I wager it's not activated yet.

I think it's still in the you have to request an invite stage. If there's anything for people to invite more people I haven't seen it.

I also signed up a week or two ago and haven't gotten mine, so who knows.

And considering portals are created by taking photos of neat and interesting things, it seems like they'll have a pool of interesting photographs to use of sites. As in, every Ingress player is now Googles personal city guide.

Define 'nearby'? There are a handful within a couple miles of my apartment, but otherwise, I have to drive.

Tonight I drove the next town over to the West to secure an unclaimed portal, and then drove East of where I live to see if I could connect two portals to one in my hometown. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't let me link up, until I realized there was an enemy connection blocking it out. I went to bust the offending portal, as it was only L1, but my phone lost power after the second attack. Oh well. Tomorrow!

The game is very much, I gather, not something that's supposed to be quick actions or changes. It's much more about long term efforts.

Well, it's hard to tell. I'd definitely have to drive. From the activity logs it's looking like... uh... a 10+ minute or so drive away to the nearest activity?

Is there a "find closest portals" feature?

Are you using www.ingress.com/intel?

The phone app is supposed to be a 'limited hand scanner' sort of deal. The games not meant to be a single player winning the day; it's supposed to be the coordination of teams over time.

Maaaaaaaan, evidently as of tonight hacking portals doesn't give out keys... which would have been nice to know before I went for my 'conquer all the territory!' in drive.

As of tonight? When? I just got a key ~6 hours ago from a hack.

Also, I wish the intel site was a bit more mobile friendly. It's hard trying to find the next portal to raid when I'm sitting in a parking lot and no computer to use.

Yeah, well, as of... 3 hours ago. There is some kind of Niantic event going on though, it's all over the front page.

Xeio wrote:Also, I wish the intel site was a bit more mobile friendly. It's hard trying to find the next portal to raid when I'm sitting in a parking lot and no computer to use.

Yeah, the phone is really supposed to be just local; scout stuff out on the intel page, print shit out, and get to it. I had two print outs and a GPS tonight for my drive.

I don't have a printer, my phone is my GPS and my scanner, nooooo. I think I'm gonna take a nice drive and claim about a half dozen or so unclaimed portals tomorrow. Though maybe not if this key business is being funny?

What is the "Front page"? I don't see much except this referring to a reduced key rate, and that was 2 days ago.

Yeah, that was the post that mentioned lowered rates. New post.

I didn't get do much yesterday, but 8 hacks yielded one portals key. Which is pretty shitty. This reduction is really dumb in my opinion, so hopefully they upped the rates a bit.

Well, I finally got my invite, and I have discovered while there are a lot more portals near me than I thought there would be, all would require driving.

Or I could just wait two weeks till I'm back at college, where there are 4 portals on campus, plus a couple more within walking distance...

Woo finally got my invite. Went through training now to try and find shit to collect and some portals.

Not having poked around much I don't suppose it'll notify me when I'm near stuff if I don't actively have the app going?

woah hey i am sad this thread is so long dead but aah. i am going to montreal this weekend to participate in the anomaly-esque event up there (because i unfortunately have out of town obligations the weekend the anomaly actually COMES to boston, grrrr.)

i am exceptionally sad i didn't get the founder's badge anyway because while i joined ingress a while back i then had a stroke and was pretty un-mobile for a while and i was like, 5k AP shy of L5 on the day in december the badges were given out. -_-

i want to attend one (there's two kind of near me? ish? in that virginia beach on the 15th is a satellite city, and the "worldwide" thing also on the 15th lists a washington dc area cell as one of the spots. but unlike the helios anomalies i attended (where there was SO much discussion and prep and things going on beforehand on comms and g+ communities) i haven't heard anything at all about what is happening and have no idea how to even participate this time around. but if i figure out what my team is doing, i will be participating.

Cool.

I go my Helios Badge for putting in blocking links when we were a volatile cell, and a lot of local team members have just been to Barcelona for Darsana, but I've been unable to travel.

I'm playing, the SF bay area still has a pretty thriving community.

I'm level 7 Smurf, and I've got a lovely couch portal, and loads of portals around my neighborhood.

Also, does that one blue player who I can only assume is some research scientist still control the North Atlantic/Arctic?

Bump!

I figured there must be a thread for this, and I'd like to at least have it in my egosearch. Still pretty active around here on both sides, with a mix of pre- and post-PoGo players. I've found myself gravitating towards the hard anchor game as much as possible locally, but there's not enough of those for my liking in any sort of reasonable distance. Luckily, "getting out of the car" counts as plenty hard for lots of players around here

On a related note, anyone here involved in Operation Portal Recon? Any thoughts on it?
