It was one of my favourite movies of the year - the only reason I don't already own it on DVD is because I'm holding out for a Phase 2 boxset.

Dunno about it being a good/great movie in any more general sense, but for personal appeal, it's right up there.

Personally I don't think it's a cinematographic masterpiece. But it was just incredibly entertaining, which can be much more important, depending on my mood. I don't always want to watch movies where you can analyse every other scene.

I thought it was the most entertaining moving, shamelessly intended to be entertaining, focused on being entertaining, and delivering on an entertaining experience throughout I've ever seen. It was light, fun, clever, polished, easy to enjoy, and just awesome.

The title of this thread should be "we are groot"

That would be too much of a spoiler. Can't give away the best line of the movie!!!

Short teaser for the sequel - I guess we'll get a proper trailer later this year/early next year.

I liked how the CGI plant got more lines than the woman, who got exactly zero lines in the trailer.

The CGI plant also got more screen time than the main character. Its almost like they only used bits of two short scenes instead of creating a detailed summary of the whole movie.

You're right, it's actually the second trailer we're seeing for the movie. Listen, I'm not saying this movie is going to be terrible and everyone should boycott it and you should feel bad for watching it.

I'm saying many different people made many different decisions regarding this trailer and regarding how the movie is presented to a potential audience, and none of them thought "Huh, maybe Gamora should speak! All the other guys speak, multiple times! She's pointed at specifically in the trailer and her sexuality made apparent, so maybe she should also appear to have some level of control of her life and how she's being addressed".

And she might be the most bad-ass feminist hero woman character of all time in the movie! I'm not saying she's not. But for now, from what we've seen, it's not particularly promising. There's no other way for me to have an opinion on the movie at the moment except for my impressions from the trailer.

I already had a strong sensation that trailers are made by idiots, or at least people pandering to idiots.

I dunno, generally the trailers for Marvel movies are pretty entertaining. But they also haven't done so great with regards to women's representation in their movie (or anyone who's not a white actor with the first name "Chris").

Sure, but coupled with the fact every other member of the team got dialog in the trailer, and they all happen to be male (which is also an issue), that's more glaring. If this were a trailer of just Groot I wouldn't have voiced any objections.

I know what your point is but it is absurd to make it on the basis of two short comedic scenes and a few CGI stills. Gamora will probably be underutilized in the movie same way Zoe Saldana is underutilized in Star Trek but lets wait for the actual movie to come out before we start criticizing it for it.

I'm criticizing the trailer. Once the movie comes out I will criticize the movie. It seems to me a trailer is supposed to entice people to watch the movie. If people think a trailer is shit, then fewer people will see the movie. If people think a trailer is brilliant, more people will see the movie. Therefor it sounds to me like it makes perfect sense to criticize a trailer. I'm not sure why everyone thinks I'm being too critical or harsh when I do that.

Because it was funny, colorful, fast-paced and exciting which makes it a pretty good trailer. You are not criticizing it for being a bad trailer but for not including something perfectly arbitrary that only you apparently expected it to include (i.e. lots of dialogue for Gamora).

Um, no, that's not true. The first trailer for the movie featured zero dialog, if I remember correctly, and I had no complaints then. There's great action in Die Hard, too, and it's a fantastically-written movie. But it also kind of sucks in the representation of women category. Things can be complicated, and I can appreciate the action and editing, and criticize it for an issue Marvel is used to hearing about for many years already. You call it arbitrary, it's your privilege to do so, but it's something that's important to me. When you write your review for the movie, feel 100% free to ignore gender representation. I will not.

I accept it could be a problem with the movie and, in fact, I expect you will be right that it is one but I just can't accept that it is a problem with the trailer. I suppose I am really splitting hairs at this point.

It's not that big a deal. I mean, it is a big deal, but the determination "the trailer is good/bad" is not relevant. I think the trailer's fine, I never said the trailer is bad. And something can handle representation badly and still be good otherwise. I think we should notice and pay attention to these things, though, which is why I wrote that.

To an extent a trailer is almost a creation in itself. It's definitely a piece of media that's consumed by others. In some cases trailers can be scenes that aren't actually a part of the movie itself when it comes out. Which is not a criticism, it's a reasoning why they can be judged separately from the films themselves (also because, as has been mentioned, they often don't involve the writer or director in their creation).

Well, we are going to get more trailers before the movie comes out. This one featured Drax and Rocket, maybe the next one will be about Gamora and whatshisname.

I think that might be my favourite marvel movie yet. They went into such great depth with the characters.

Spoiler:
I thought it was quite interesting getting more of an insight into Nebula and Gamora's childhood. They have both dealt with their abuse in different ways - Nebula has lashed out and outwardly shows how angry she is at the world, while Gamora internalised everything a lot more and tries not to think about it.

I liked the interaction between Yondu and Rocket, and how Rocket was the one to make the decision for the ship to leave the planet, even though he knew it meant the death of a friend. Yondu's funeral was beautiful and I'm glad that the movie pretty much ended with that (discounting the 5 end credit scenes) because it meant you could really focus on it (contrast to Quicksilver's death or Coulson where it just happens to provide motivation and then the heroes never mention it again).

The part where Drax is thinking about his daughter, and then Mantis touches him arm and cries was really well done. I also liked his story about how his wife was also not a dancer. Even though it's never shown on screen it's nice to see non-outwardly emotional people portrayed as loving as 'deeply' as those who do show their emotions.
There was a lot of humour, but definitely a lot more heart.

I'm a little on the fence about it. The whole "let's go to the idyllic planetary paradise that secretly harbors a terrible terrible secret" thing has been so completely overdone I don't even see the need to spoiler it. It's definitely not a good thing when your movie feels like it's calling back to Star Trek III or Star Trek V.

Dorkly pretty much nailed it here. [Spoilers aplenty.]
http://www.dorkly.com/post/83453/gotg-2-questions

Also, Yondu is totally OP. It felt kind of squicky in this boisterous sci-fi adventure when he's
Spoiler:
casually murdering the lot of his mutinous crew, bodies raining down from the decks. Especially considering that they were his crew and probably a lot of them only went along with the mutiny since they were quite clearly going to die if they didn't.
