Primquel Sub Titles

Postby azule » Wed Dec 17, 2014 12:27 am UTC

If the first movie in a series (or reboot) was a sequel it would have a sub title (is there a different name for that?). I would love to hear suggestions for movies that have sequels.

I don't have another good example, but I just saw an ad for The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea. This obviously makes the first "The Little Mermaid 1: Get On To The Land".

Feel free to sub title movies that only ever got a number, like the Toy Story series.

Fun idea for a thread. God, wish I could remember the plots of more movies.
ummmm
Lilo and Stitch: Blue Suede Nightmare
...Not good at this...
I already have a hate thread. Necromancy > redundancy here, so post there.

I've compiled some movies (from list on the 'net) to make it easier to start (for some, like me).

These are examples of movies with sub titled sequels (one of the sequels are represented) (The first phrase is usually the primquel's title):
Spoiler:
A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge
Addams Family Reunion
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Highlander II: The Quickening
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Ice Age: The Meltdown
Jackass: Number Two
Mad Max 2: Road Warrior
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
Next Friday
Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment
Rambo: First Blood Part II
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams
Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
The Bride of Frankenstein
The Crow: City of Angels
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The Land Before Time VIII: The Big Freeze
The Matrix Reloaded
The Mummy Returns
The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear
Thor: The Dark World
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Tron: Legacy
Underworld: Evolution
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
X2: X-Men United

These have "sub titles" but are usually referring to the person's job or whatever. The primquel needs a real sub title:
Spoiler:
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
The Bourne Identity

This is a related idea, that these movies are sequels but have no overall title. It would be cool to have a (non-sub) title for these:
Spoiler:
Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon (I think?)
Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick

These are movies that had nothing but numbered sequels:
Spoiler:
21 Jump Street
American Pie
Bad Boys
Basic Instinct
Blade
Clerks
Despicable Me
Die Hard
Final Destination
Iron Man
Fast & Furious
Kill Bill
Lethal Weapon
Mission: Impossible
Night At The Museum
Paranormal Activity
Rocky
Rush Hour
Saw
Scary Movie
Shrek
Spiderman
Star Trek
The Butterfly Effect
The Godfather
The Grudge
The Karate Kid
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Transporter
Wayne's World

These have variations, but are sorta like the previous spoiler:
Spoiler:
Alien, Aliens, Alien 3
Jurassic Park, Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III

I'm gonna pick... "It's a Planet of the Apes". Also, "First Friday". (hehe...I'm a cheater.)

But two of the examples on your list have a good subtitle for the first movie:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad

because both were film adaptations of TV series (although I doubt very many people were aware of "Police Squad" before Naked Gun came out...)

The way to think about it is if they were the sequel to a movie already call "The Motion Picture", what would their sub be. To call your second movie "The Motion Picture" would not fly anywhere. Although, it would be a hilarious goof if you wanted to be silly. (Like Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie For Theaters. Those kinds of movies.)

Telling people it's from a show, does not tell people what it's plot is. A lot of the sequel subs give some plot away, or say something intriguing. That's what I was looking for, here. That, or something punny.

OK, that's fair. Star Trek subtitles are plot related; so I propose changing the title of TMP to
either Star Trek I: The Probe or Star Trek I: The Continuing Mission

Naked Gun subtitles are a bit more absurdist, so we could go with something random like
Naked Gun 1: The Idiot Mastermind or Naked Gun 1 0/1: The Beginning of the End or Naked Gun 0: The Knuckles of Justice

...

I'll also go with

The Land Before Time I: The Dawn of Friendship

Ace Ventura: Do Not Go In There (or Ace Ventura: Quest for the Albino Pigeon)

Home Alone I: Operation Ho Ho Ho [taken from Kevin's crayon-drawn battle plan of the house] or Home Alone: Except For Burglars

Those are all great! "The Continuing Mission" is elusive.

Ace Ventura: Bottlenose Blundering, or, less spoilery,
Ace Ventura: Squeaky Clean. (Also alludes to him as a person...or do I not remember his character well enough. Also anti-alludes, because of all the pet interactions that I would never do...unclean.)

Edit: Argh, you edited ninja'd me into complimenting your new titles (after the "..."). But, still good. Plus, you ninja'd me on Ace Ventura... hah. (But it's fine to redo any of the titles.)

Well, I picked "continuing mission" because it was from the (modified, although not until Star Trek III, IIRC) mission statement. Which works well for Star Trek subtitles and episode and novel titles...
("These Are The Voyages...", "Strange New Worlds", "Where No Man Has Gone Before", etc.)
