Steven Universe

Postby Zohar » Tue Apr 14, 2015 1:10 am UTC

There doesn't seem to be a thread for it so I figured I'll just start one. For those who don't know, it's on Cartoon Network, each episode is 11 minutes, season two just started. The premise is Steven is the child of a human father and a "crystal gem" mother, and so he lives with three other crystal gems as they train him to use his powers.

I think I saw all episodes (50 in S1 and the four or so that came out for S2) in just a week or so. I love it a lot. It definitely starts slow and it's not very clear what it's trying to do (other than monster/adventure of the week), but it soon becomes apparent there's a long-term storyline and intricate world building. It also has a diverse cast, female empowerment, racial representation, different forms of manhood and womanhood, just really great. Also there are some songs from time to time.

S1 finale spoilers:
Spoiler:
I basically smiled throughout all of jail-break, and I've been listening to Stronger Than You on repeat. I noticed Garnet had two gems but didn't really connect it with her being a fusion. I love the reveal, I love that Ruby and Sapphire are lovers and Garnet is the embodiment of their relationship.

I'm pretty curious to see what will happen with Lapis Lazuli, I liked her a lot, I'm sure we'll see her again.

this show delights me to no end. it is so positive! and such a diverse cast! and the main character is a fat boy who cries and has emotions and these things are never a punchline! in fact people are never the punchlines in mean ways.

also i want to cosplay garnet she is the best thing ever.

i didn't know what to expect when i started watching this, and then i ended up watching the entire show on amazon in three days and then sitting down a week later to start watching it again with my partner because i was so gleeful about how delightful it is.

Getting in with how cute this whole thing is. I love SU. It makes me happy and the whole thing is just - argh. So damn good. It makes me smile. Esp. the finale. Garnet is the best.

Random ridiculousness? I was surprised they devoted an entire episode for something that's totally unrelated to the show. I personally didn't care for it.

I like that Steven's powers are mostly defensive.

I thought the UG crossover was pretty funny, though there was one bit that kind of bothered me:
Spoiler:
When Uncle Grandpa first appears in front of Steven, he looks like Rose Quartz. Taunting Steven with a false image of his dead mother is pretty cruel. Amythyst seemed to realized she messed up when she did the same in Maximum Capacity. Steven didn't seem to mind UG doing it, but not minding that is kind of out of character for him, given that one of the few times he gets genuinely upset is when Lars calls his mom weird.

I get that it's a non-canon April Fools' episode, but it's still kind of counter to that part of Steven's character. Everything else was characters acting as exaggerated versions of themselves, not counter to their normal selves.

When Pearl was freaking out, therewas this side view of her head with one eye wide open that looked familiar, but I can't tell what it reminded me of. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I see a lot of similarities to Spaceballs, though they're probably a coincidence. S1 finale
Spoiler:
The hand ship has something on the wrist that makes it look like it connects to some large, Mega-maid type mech.
Jasper is Bright Helmet instead of Dark Helmet.
Greg lives in a van, not as nice as a Winnebago, but pretty close.
The design on Steven's shirt is a Lone Star.

Another Steven Bomb is coming on June 15-19th. Are people ready?

Episode titles are
Spoiler:
Sworn to the Sword, Rising Tide/Crashing Skies, Keeping it Together, We Need to Talk, and Chille Tid.

The last Steven Bomb revealed some seriously big things, I'm expecting good stuff from this one. At the very least it's a nice way of breaking the hiatus.

I'm very excited. Ideas about the episodes (just guesses based on the names):
Spoiler:
Sworn to the Sword - initiation ceremony of some sort for Steven? It immediately brings to mind Rose's sword. Or maybe Pearl gets a "level up" with Rose's sword?

Rising Tide/Crashing Skies - I'm sure it will be about Lapis Lazuli and Jasper. But only one episode? Maybe ties into the next one.

Keeping it Together - Some Ruby/Sapphire action? Maybe they split up somehow following the previous episode?

We Need to Talk - Either reuniting Ruby and Sapphire (if they split for some reason), or maybe they meet and talk with Peridot or their homeworld.

Chille Tid - I have no idea? Comedic relief episode following an intense week, possibly?

There are little descriptions of the episodes up on the wiki that give you some idea of what's to come. I have read some. Should be some fun episodes, but I'm not sure we'll have the same sort of plot bombshells we did before.

Well that was almost entirely wrong.
Spoiler:
I enjoyed Sworn to the Sword a lot, I thought it was really well done and I love the direction this is going. I can't wait for Stevonie to start fighting with shield and sword in hand.
I didn't particularly like Rising Tide/Crashing Skies. But then I don't like that guy's character too much.
Keeping It Together was excellent and disturbing, and I guess I was somewhat right about it being about Garnet and fusion.
We Need to Talk was WONDERFUL. I loved it so much. It reminded me a lot of Lion 3, the interaction between Greg and Rose was great, I liked how Rose had her "inhuman flaws", I feel Pearl has been presented a bit negatively in this episode and Chille Tid, and somewhat so in Sworn to the Sword, hopefully that will change soon.
Chille Tid was also pretty good, another disturbing look into fusion, and some awesome Garnet action.

What I really want to learn about now is the "three long stories" of how the gems joined up with Rose.

I liked Rising Tide/Crashing Skies OK, but it won't stand up to rewatching as much as the typical SU episode.

Chille Tid
Spoiler:
Her friendship really DOES come through subliminal. And here I thought Steven was just stuck for a rhyme.

I wonder if Steven would be able to fuse with Lapis. He couldn't fuse with any of the Crystal Gems, but I think he still sees them as authority figures. They even had to prompt him to joint them on the warp pad to look for Peridot. Fusion seems to require mutual respect between equals. Granted, that's not the case with Malachite, but that fusion isn't working out so well.

Yes!! My current favorite show. It seemed like merely a fun watch in the beginning. Now I'm pretty much floored at how painstakingly clever the plot development and world-building is!

So, any theories about

I felt it was pretty slow going, but got going about halfway through the first season?? Basically, as soon as
Spoiler:
peridot showed up.

Also, I like how they went full fertility goddess with Rose Quartz' design - they obviously have her as the most maternal character.

I like Greg's music a lot.

They way they've done all the designs and all the characters is pretty awesome though.

From the title of the upcoming 3rd Stevenbomb, I can see 3 possibilites:
Spoiler:
1) Sardonyx is a another Homeworld gem. This seems unlikely, since SU doesn't seem to be in that much of a hurry to advance the main plot.

2) They separate the shards from "Keeping it Together", put them with the shards from "Secret Team" and find they have enough to reconstitute one complete gem using Steven's healing powers. I don't know if they'd want to add another cast member, though.

3) Sardonyx is a fusion we haven't seen before, either of Steven and one of the other CGs, or Pearl and Garnet. I'm thinking P&G, just becase Sardonyx sounds like sardonic, which could be a combination of Pearl's smugness and Garnet's aloofness.

Also episode 30 island adventure? I would have left to if I knew there was a dangerous gem around… Also for episode 31 polymorphic sentient rocks applies to the gems in a way I guess.^^

Stevenbomb 3
Spoiler:
"Cry For Help" - Amythyst's self esteem issues, shown in "On the Run" and "Reformed", had made me think that part of why Sugilite refused to defuse was that Amythyst wanted a break from being herself. Seeing her relate to Pearl's general wanting to be stronger was a bit of a letdown.

The only thing I didn't like was Sardonyx, who's pretty annoying. I did like that she had a British accent, but less thick than Garnet's. It was a reasonable combination of Garnet and Pearl's voices. Nicki Minaj was fun as Sugilite, but sounded much more like Amythyst than a hybrid of her components. I wonder if we'll ever get an episode explaining why Garnet has a British accent while Ruby and Sapphire have American accents.

Amythyst's short "Is there something I can do" tune was the only song this entire Stevenbomb. SB1 had "Stronger That You" and Steven's rigntone song. SB2 had "Jam Buds", "Do it For Him", and the Greg/Rose duet. This song wasn't much, but Amythyst's singing sounded a lot better than in "On the Run".

"Keystone Motel" - Like lots of people, I've been waiting for a Ruby & Sapphire episode since we saw them in "Jailbreak". We got one, and it was good, but they both kind of came off as jerks. That's understandable, since they only separated because they were having a serious fight. But, I'm still hoping to see an R&S episode where they split willingly, like if Garnet needs to be in two places at once for a mission more critical than folding laundry.

At first I thought Steven wondering if the fight was his fault was a stretch. Maybe it would've been better to confront Pearl privately and give her a chance to confess, but it's still Pearl who tricked Garnet. Then, I remembered "Joy Ride", when Steven wondered if the Gems blamed him for his mom not being there. Hearing the Gems talk so highly of his mother's leadership must make him proud, but also cause him to blame himself a little for anything that goes wrong at all.

There was a meta level to this one, too. As viewers, we're pretty sure that Garnet and Pearl will make up sooner or later. So, it's easy to take a view like Sapphire's, and just wait for it all to play out. But, Ruby's points about how people/characters are feeling now reminds us that it's about the journey, not the destination, and the point isn't to see if the fight is resolved, but how the characters will be affected by the resolution.

"Onion Friend" - Seeing Onion in the promos got me pretty psyched. He's probably my favorite Beach City resident. Given Onion's skill with a harpoon gun, and seeing Pearl get poofed by the holo-spear, I'm hoping Onion takes out a few Homeworld Gems at some point.

That Steven only hung out with him to give Amythyst time to vent with her friend about Garnet and Pearl's fight made what could have been a pure filler episode relevant to the main plot while providing character development for both Steven and Amythyst. Plus, I still laugh when I think of the mouse's body language when Steven says, "We all gotta eat."

"Historical Friction" - Seeing Jamie in the promos did not get me psyched. But I ended up liking this one, since his acting dreams were the framework for the Beach City backstory instead of the main focus. I just don't think he's an interesting enough character to carry an episode.

And it turns out that Mayor Bill Dewey is the direct descendant of Capt. William Dewey, who founded a town beset by magical forces. I wonder if this means he'll ascend into a snake demon at the end of Season 3. Ronaldo was right all along.

"Friend Ship" - I always get kick out of watching Steve and Periot interact with each other. I just hope Peridot episodes don't always end with her just hovering away. At least have Amythyst shapeshift into a bird and chase her for awhile. The resolution between Garnet and Pearl might have been less predictable is this was part of a regular, weekly airing instead of the finale of a Stevenbomb called, "The Week of Sardonyx."

Keystone Motel Musings:
Spoiler:
That episode was easily my favourite from the whole week. I too have been wanting to see Ruby and Sapphire apart and that episode did a great job of it. Sapphire confirmed as a cyclops, their weird temperature powers, Ruby getting md as hell and then the cute, on-screen kiss and snuggles. "Laughy Sapphy". Plus, cute Steven and Gregg time. Great episode!

I agree, for pretty much all the reasons mentioned. Overall I enjoyed most of this bomb, but it didn't feel as significant as other bombs. There were definitely parts in those other ones where I was "Oh me yarm!" both an "Oh me yarm this is awesome!" and "Oh me yarm I can't believe they did this!". But it was still good, just a bit calmer.

It looks like we only have three more episodes until the end of the season. :( But it was renewed for season 3! :)

Most of the spoilers seem to be Season 2, or the finale of Season 1, since that's when the thread was started. I'd avoid them until I caught up, if I were you. There's only 60-something episodes so far. If you've gone through the first 30 in a couple days, you should be caught up soon.

We should probably note episode numbers and/or titles outside the spoilers so people know what they're getting into.

What are you using to determine what order to watch the episodes in? They aired a few episodes out of logical order to accomodate the first Stevenbomb. If the list you're using has "Shirt Club" before "Joyride", you should be all set.

For some reason Cartoon Network doesn't always feel like putting the show on a weekly basis, so sometimes there might be a hiatus and then a "Steven Bomb" - 5 episodes in one week. That was the case with season 1's finale, as well as the last, essentially, 10 episodes.

I wonder whether Steven will also live forever (or rather until killed) considering that in one episode he rapidly aged and then transformed back I think his transformation powers should trump aging.

Well, he's definitely grown from being a baby into the boy he is right now. I'm guessing he does age, but that he can control his appearance to an extent, like the gems do (and like he did when he got old and reverted).

Edit: Although I guess you could say his appearance matches his emotional development and that's just where he is and where he was as a baby, and that won't change much.

About Steven's aging:
Spoiler:
He seemed to be the age he felt. I imagine that, now he is aware of that sort of thing, it could lead to him being in his prime for many many years. Of course, we'll likely never know, but seeing as Pearl has been on Earth alone for over 10,000 years, not taking into account her time on homeworld... the gems are fucking old and showing no sign of slowing.

Extended theme song
There's clips of stuff from the end of Season 1, so you should wait until you've seen all of that before watching. There's also an actual spoiler of a silhouette of a character we haven't seen yet, whose identity can be derived from context.

So I'd been hearing so many good things about the show for a while and I finally found the time to sit down and watch it. It started out quite slow but I loved how they took the time to develop the characters and once the story gets going, the story is very interesting. It took me most of a week to get through the first half of the season but then I finished the second half in a single day.

I tried to start the second season yesterday but that Uncle Grandpa episode really tripped me up. I ended up just stopping it halfway through and hope that "none of this is cannon" joke means I am safe doing so.

Spoiler:
Do we ever see him as a baby? I don't remember anything in season one ever showing him as younger than he currently is and Greg Universe looks like he might have easily aged 20 years since meeting Rose so it's not like we know Steven is supposed to be the age he looks.

My personal theory is that Steven isn't immortal in the way that the gems seem to be. He can probably fix his body indefinitely but for him it isn't just a construct that can be replaced if it gets damaged beyond repair. He still has Rose Quartz in him, the gem is not damaged, so I think that when Steven one day dies, Rose will be able to reform her body and come back.

Further comments on Steven's aging and potential death:

Spoiler:
There's a glimpse of a younger Steven (it's dangerously cute) in the Extended Trailer video above this post. Gregg looks pretty much the same as he does in the present so I don't think there's any weird aging thing going on with regards to that.

There has been a couple of theories about what might happen if/when Steven dies. My personal favourite is Rose eventually reforming out of the gem, but that'd be a bit show-ending now, wouldn't it? ;) Either way, Steven poofing would be an interesting thing to see if only because nobody knows what the hell is going to happen.

Spoiler:
I just saw the episode about his old manager yesterday. Greg looked and sounded an awful lot younger in that one, probably late teens or very early twenties. I'd say he looks to be in his 40s now. Of course, there is nothing to say how long after that episode Steven came along :)

This is something that supposedly appears in a companion book for Steven Universe. So it's not in the show, and I don't know if it will be. Spoilers at your own risk I guess? Related to his birth.
Apparently Rose created her own womb in order to give birth to Steven, so that would imply he was a baby and actually born at some point.

TD - I posted that link when I first found it. A day or two later, I realized it was actually relevant to the ongoing aging conversation. This is sort of relevant to the Steven's death question, in that it specifically avoids answering the question. It's also the source of those chibi versions of the CGs that they use in some SU commercials.

Further speculation:
Spoiler:
I'm also thinking that if Steven dies, Rose will reemerge from the gem. From what she said in "Lion 3: Striaght to Video" about them not existing at the same time, and the uniqueness of being human, it sounds like her plan is to live a lifetime as a human to know what that's like.

I wonder if Steven could survive without the gem. If it were carefully, surgically removed, maybe he'd be OK. He'd probably lose his powers, but possibly gain his mom.

Re Steven's birth:
Spoiler:
Didn't Rose look pregnant in the video? I think Steven was born in that way, don't know what would happen if he didn't have the gem though.

Also, Steven's gem is where the umbilicus is. So, also implying that he grew that way.
