New Star Trek Series in January 2017

Postby Mambrino » Mon Nov 02, 2015 5:38 pm UTC

Every new movie seems to have a separate thread, so guess this warrants a new one, too:

New Star Trek Series Premieres January 2017

CBS wrote:CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.

The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.

The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new Star Trek TV series. Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci, and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. Both films were produced and directed by J.J. Abrams.

The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.

(...)

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

I wonder what the "not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond" means. Is it set in the new movie universe? Same universe as all the old series? I'd definitely prefer the latter to the former.

I'm pretty sure that just means that it won't be a companion piece to the movie. Given that Kurtzman's involved, I think this will be set in the reboot universe; I know a lot of fans have been hoping for something set in the prime universe, but I don't think that's ever been in the cards.

I really hope it will be more about exploration than shooting though.

I really, really, really hope they'll go for the more ideological/civilised/future-society/utopian setting* of the earlier (midway?) series, unlike Enterprise and the latest films (hell, I'd vote for an opera-loving captain who relates things to roman and greek culture any day; though I grew up with Voyager). But given the trend in the Star Trek franchise and that the same writer from the latest films is joining in, it'll be the same ride as these films.

One can hope. There's "seeking" in the 4th paragraph! That sounds like the bad guy won't be central during the whole season.

*I'm not sure what makes me not enjoy Enterprise, but I guess it's the egoism or human-centricism. The films don't need this though, because they can exchange plot and character with more action and bad guys.

I'm not sure it will be like the movies really, they have the movies for that (they've already pencilled in another one in 2019 as well). However it is on CBS, so it's probably doomed to be terrible like most CBS shows are anyway.

Hasn't Star Trek always been aired on CBS?

The first three shows were, but Voyager and Enterprise were on the now-defunct network UPN. Either way, charliepanayi raises a valid point about CBS's recent shows – or, we could say, Kurtzman's shows – not having been too impressive. Myself, I don't have high hopes for this new series.

It's interesting that this one is going to be a digital-only release – I don't know if that bodes well (maybe they'll put more effort into it since it will be seen as a flagship for the service) or ill (maybe they care too little to even put it on air, and they're just shunting it off to the Internet).

Edit: Oh, and apparently you have to pay for CBS All Access – it doesn't come free with cable plans like HBO GO or FXNOW. Are many people going to sign up just for one show?

So, no information about era, which universe, whether there will be any link to previously established characters...

Maybe they're saving some really cool stuff for a later reveal, but I can't help wondering what will make this more of a Star Trek series than, say, Andromeda was...

I had an idea for a new Star Trek series a while back, and then they make a new Star Trek series? Idea theft! Okay, sure in my series the Federation were the bad guys, and it took place in the original universe like this will probably not, but still.

But no, i have no hope for this. I didn't like either of the new films, and I suspect this will use the current TV action/drama format where every episode ends on a cliffhanger, which gets pretty annoying.

It's an initial announcement, and the show won't air for over a year yet. Why are you expecting so much info right off the bat? Nobody knows anything about the new Twin Peaks yet for instance, and that's meant to broadcast next year.

So wait reading that announcement again, it says in the US it's only available through CBS All-access (a streaming service) but it will be televised in the rest of the world? That seems like an odd decision.

Yeah, what's with the shows in the last few years that you have to stream online? I mean, I'm sure there are many people out there who have tablets or whatever, who prefer to watch their TV shows on a bus, train, or airplane, but I like my TV to actually be on my TV in my living room. I pay for basic cable to get local news, game shows, and the handful of network shows I record every week, and the edited-for-TV movies, only because it isn't free with the bunny ears anymore, and I know I don't get to watch Game of Thrones or whatever, but that should at least include Star Trek on CBS. Wow, I sound like an old fogey.

Anyway, get of my lawn yada yada end rant.

I'm just surprised that a current TV network would move a show to ONLY online, when they still have a fairly solid television following going. It's even odder that it will be only in the US where its uniquely available via the streaming service, but they'll still have it on television (and also online) in other countries.

I assume that the new series will be in the reboot continuity? I just hope it's not a reboot version of Next Generation, with a younger alternate-universe Picard or something, maybe on the Stargazer with the Crushers. Ehh, maybe that wouldn't be too bad... but seriously, I hope they come up with something original!

Spoiler:
mathmannix wrote:Anyway, get of my lawn yada yada end rant.

You think you have it bad?

I grew up without a television set, and have been living in the post-streaming, physical media renaissance era for the past seven years after I saw the alarming turn of events about to happen, a decade before everyone else, and have been living, so to speak, out of the DVD bin at my local thrift store ever since. Of course, that means that in a few years people are going to start lashing back at what will then be a landscape of unacceptable terms, with services like Netflix reeling in producers left and right with exclusive deals and pulling shows from their libraries to which they were the only legal avenue of consumption.

Well, or maybe I'm just crazy, and low-quality digital copies of movies and shows with excessive DRM is our glorious future.
So CBS is working on a new series with the people who worked on the new movies, and meanwhile the people who worked on the old shows are working on their own new series. If it weren't for the fact that one of them owns the rights and would like C&D the other into the ground, I would have said this could turn into a fun and enriching competition between two radically different visions of the franchise we know and love.
