Saw Coco this weekend. The visuals are amazing, it's one of the most beautiful movies I've seen in a while. The music is pretty great too. The story is pretty bland - the characters, their motivations, and the plot twists will all be very familiar to anyone who has seen other Pixar movies, but it was pretty funny, and the setting makes up for a lot of the blandness. The last 15 minutes felt like a non-stop series of punches straight in the gut. Of course I was sobbing. For comparison, I felt this was much sadder than the opening of Up, and the movie left me feeling pretty drained by the end of it.

Spoilers regarding the main thing I disliked in the movie (trying to be as non-specific as possible):
The twist in the middle of the film introduces a villain. There was absolutely no reason to write a villain into this story. There are so many factors working against the kid in the movie - the time limit, the disdain from his family, the unfamiliar setting, no reason to have a bad guy. I wish movie studios got better at writing movies targeted at children without villains.

I'm very curious to know what Mexicans or people who know Mexican culture well felt about the depiction of Dia de los Muertos.

absolutely nothing wrong with watching cartoon movies, anyone who shames you for it is a bad person who should feel bad.
