Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)

Postby Guybrush » Wed Oct 03, 2007 5:03 pm UTC

Well, I just got a blast from the past. I was wandering through my library the other day and I saw MST3K on the shelf. I remembered how much I loved it and I checked it out and watched all 4 episodes when I got home. What the show is is basically one guy and his robot friends (don't ask) watching these old, crappy movies and making fun of them and adding hilarious dialogue for the characters. Does anyone else remember watching this?

I love it! I was minding my own business when a friend called and asked me to come to his house to watch it! I hadn't seen it for years, so I had almost forgotten the greatness thereof...

On the third or fourth episode of Season Zero (broadcast only on KTMA in Minneapolis,) Joel set up an answering machine for audience feedback. The callers from the first few days became the first MSTies. My number is 46.

I just started watching this excellent series. I've seen "Manos" the Hands of Fate, Santa Conquers the Martians, and Gamera Vs. Barugon. The Manos episode was especially hilarious.

I love MST3K! My favorite one is Jack Frost. Parts: The Clonus Horror and Touch of Satan come in a close second though.

Ahahaha, my boyfriend tried describing it to me one day, and I was all "....." then I watched an episode, and it was massively awesome.

"red 3 is down!"

For anyone who misses MST3K and wants new episodes, several of the guys responsible have begun a new series, non-science fiction, called "Film Crew".

Mike Nelson has his own site where he releases DVD commentaries, MST3K style.

http://www.rifftrax.com/

I have yet to purchase any, but I have it on good authority that they are hilarious.

In the sample from "The Departed" he and his guest, Lowtax, pretty much just completely rescripted the movie instead of just making fun of it MST style.

I fell in love with MST3K when I saw the movie...me and one of my friends became friends because of it...and Monkey....we didn't realise we had a mutual interest in cult programmes...

Wow, how could I have gone this long without knowing about this?
I mean seriously, no one told me this show was that awesome? This whole time?

I watched a few shorts on YouTube and am now grabbing a couple movies up on Google Video, Space Mutiny and Night of the Beast. I am told they are awesome.

MST3K I'm sure was before my time, but I was introduced to it at an early age, I love it although references to actors leaves me drawing a complete blank most of the time.
If only they could do the same for newer films, that would be entertaining and interesting to see what new viewers would be attracted by it.

My Dad loved this show when I was a kid, and I feel that this was probably why I became the Sci-Fi nerd I am today.

Thanks Dad.

I keep thinking I need to watch some episodes again but I don't ever have time :(

I've seen the movie, I thought it was quite amusing, and I probably should make some attempt to see more of it. We watched it right after doing the EXACT SAME THING to the movie Snakes on a Train (which is better than Snakes on a Plane, but makes just as little sense)

If you get a chance, watch the Hobgoblins episode. Me and some friends recently watched it, and it's the worst movie ever, which makes it one of the best MST3K episodes.

Some movie highlights:
-A 5 min long fight, with gardening equipment
-Monsters that make the gremlins look like modern day CGI
-A full length music video of a horrible 80's band

That is the best show on the planet. Sadly, I've only been able to find two episodes: "Manos, the hands of fate", and "Santa Clause conquers the martians". Still, both of those were well worth seeing.

Love it, for the educated type with patience who are willing to sit through a bad (and most of the time downright terrible) film.

Favorite episodes:
Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders
Space Mutiny
Time Chasers
Werewolf
Laserblast
The Final Sacrifice
Squirm
Manos: The Hands of Fate

All of them are on youtube because Best Brains Inc. knows they'll never get the rights to the films in order to release them on DVD so they turn the other cheek. (My theory)

The movie's a good place to start, it has a lot dumber jokes for those less inclined to the humor and the film they chose is actually decent on its own; plus it's shorter.

The only problem I have with the show is the excessive number of way too specific pop culture references that I'm unable to get. I mean, on Manos: The Hands of Fate, they mentioned the MOODY BLUES! Who the HELL aside from me knows (and loves) the Moody Blues???

I watched the Manos: The Hands of Fate episode start to finish and adored it. Then I tried a few others, but wasn't too amused. Whee, I'm different.

Since it didn't get mentioned here yet - Joel, Josh (Season 1 Tom), Trace (Dr F and Crow), Frank (Frank), and Mary-Jo (Pearl) have their own riffing series going now as Cinematic Titanic. They're up to Five episodes now and release on an almost-monthly basis. Can be purchased as DVDs or Direct Downloads.

They've been doing a good job so far. The material's as good as its ever been and the host segments all happen in silhouette, right on the stage. (They pause the film for the duration)

They do live shows as well, worth checking out if they come by your way.

Here are my favorites (in no particular order)

Final Justice
FutureWar
Werewolf
Zombie Nightmare
Laserblast
Soultaker

I'd put some of the classics up there, but I've never seen Manos, Mitchell, or any other cliche faves.
Careful, we don't want to learn from this.
