Most relaxing TV show ever?

Postby fischju » Tue Jul 15, 2008 4:45 am UTC

What do you think the most calming TV show ever made is? I've thought long and hard, and the best I can come up with is Cheers. Everytime the reruns come on, I can just sit, watch, and forget everything else that is going on in my life. What do you think it is?

Buffy is the ultimate in comfort tv. Its the goggle box equivalent of a hug by your attractive-but-you're-my-best-friend girl. A little bit exciting, but you don't want to do anything except sit there and feel warm and fuzzy.

I'm this way with Scrubs. I've one of the few shows I can watch over and over no matter how many times I've seen a particular episode.

Aquariavision
Aquariavision on Sky Arts HD is an hour-long montage of undersea footage from a coral reef ... The imagery is stunning, from the deep blue water to the brightly coloured fish ... just soothing background music to accompany the pictures. It’s really quite a beautiful experience

Yes, this is totally cheating. It really is amazingly soothing though.

Yeah, but that's cos both of those shows liquefy your brain and causes it to dribble out of your ears after fifteen minutes.

I was watching one of the HD-TV demonstrations in a store once, you know, with all the brightly-coloured fish floating around some nice coral that looks so realistic?

Now that was relaxing.

What they were doing selling a TV in a pet store, I never found out.

I think old-school simpsons. Not new though, because I get a little anxious because it's not as funny as it used to be, so I cringe more.

Even though I still love that show.

I think Pushing Daisies is pretty relaxing, particularly because of its visual style- the show exists in its own fairy-taleish universe and it shows. It can verge on unbearable cuteness at times, but it's mostly in charming territory, and it's pretty easy to lose yourself in the story.

Discovery Channel and Science Channel, in particular documentaries on space and deep seas are pretty relaxing. How It's Made gets kind of hypnotic.

I also have to be careful with marathons on Sci-Fi channel, becuase if it's The Twilight Zone or Kingdom Hospital I will sit down and watch the entire five or six hours. I don't knwo if that's soothing exactly tho'.

Unfortunately, it's not. I watch it IN MY MIND. Or sometimes on Youtube. I know for a fact that, for example, the full relax-o-vision episode is up on youtube. It's one of my favorite cartoons of all time.

I agree, with the addendum of early Scrubs - seasons 1 to 3. After that I can't lose myself in it quite so completely.

Seinfeld is a satire of manners, or something like that.

They aren't nearly as efficient at that as Robot Chicken, though.

I'm trying not to just go off and list all my favorite shows. Lost for example isn't soothing no matter how many times you watch it. Although if you had a montage of all the scenes with Sayid in it, that might be...hmmmmm...the best thing ever....

Refocusing, Friends is relaxing, but of the "brain dribble" type. I second House. Basically, anything forumulaic, where you know the shape of every episode. Law and Order would excel at this. Star Trek too, I bet, though I haven't watched them. Early seasons of Monk are fabulous for the formula. Right up until Sharona gets written out. Then stop right there and never look back. This is probably why Scrubs works so well, too; you know you're going to get an Aesop every half-hour.

I find Star Trek:NG to be very relaxing. The pace is a bit slower than "modern" TV and the SFX aren't usually laughably bad. There's also a lot of talking compared to the amount of action. And the voice of Patrick Stewart is very comforting to me.

I think Meerkat Manor is relaxing. It's dramatic (for animals), but at the same time it's a nature show.

Also, I think Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law is relaxing to me.

I have an idea for a new show:
A daytime chat show with Morgan Freeman & Patrick Stewart.

It would be somewhere between Loose Women and Jeremy Kyle.
They would have topical discussion first, possibly some reveiws and some guests. Then people could call in and ask for advice about their wayward teenagers. Then Morgan would say "Is the young man there? Could you put him on the phone please." Morgan would tell him a story starting with "When I was a boy", Patrick would offer some sage advice and the young man would be changed forever.

Because if Morgan Freeman told you a story from his boyhood and Patrick Stewart told you to sort your life out, you'd sort your life out.
