So the store did not have any Jack! So I went to another store and ordered it in. Hopefully it will be here today. (they only sold season one... this makes me sad)

My favorite episode keeps changing, but my current one is probably going to remain it for a while:

Jack and the Spartans.
Dude, it's Jack and the 300 of Thermopylae, fighting Persian robots, and culminating in Jack and Leonidas together against a giant cybernetic tentacled Xerxes. And this was around 3 years before the movie.
And the flashback sequence looks exactly like the slow-motion cinematography in 300.

As for why it was cancelled: I always assumed that Tartakovsky stopped making them because he was doing Clone Wars. As for why he never started back, it might have had something to do with Mako's death.

EDIT: Oh, and I completely forgot about the Scotsman. Every moment of Scotsman camera time is pure gold.

I only finally got to watch Samurai Jack fairly recently: the UK's Cartoon Network have been showing it at 11.00 most nights for a while. Bizarre scheduling, though: the episodes are mostly vaguely in order, but some of them seem to crop up disproportionately often (the episode with the enslaved elephant-like beasts, for example). Not sure if they still show it, as since leaving my shared house at uni I no longer have access to cable TV. :(

Shame there's no Region 2 DVD release. I may be forced to use more... dubious... methods to... acquire... the series. (Dotdotdot.)

PatrickRsGhost wrote:Jack And The Three Blind Archers: Jack comes upon a tower that contains a wishing well that grants what you most desire. Jack, of course wants to return to his own time. The tower and well are guarded by three archers that are blind, but have sonar-like hearing. He blindfolds himself and moves as quickly as they do, not getting hit, until he finally reaches the tower, defeating the guards. The guards turn out to be soldiers that wanted to be the greatest warriors of all time. They were cursed by the well with their blindness, and forced to protect the well.

Great episode. Being a big Daredevil fan, I really appreciated the way the bit where he listens to the snowflakes landing on the ground was visualised.

No offense, but a collection of clips with weird music over them does no justice to the show.

It is, unfortunately, in the same category, much in the same way that "Superhero Movies" include both Iron Man and Cat Woman. Do you hate one because of the other?

I'm on episode two, and I just noticed something really cool. On one of the billboards, it says "Talking Dog says", just like in some of the Powerpuff Girls episodes. The sound effects when Aku first rises also reminds me of some of the sound effects in Powerpuff Girls too! Were they made by the same people?

Well, Powerpuff Girls is Craig McCracken's creation, but seeing how Genndy Tartakovsky was a director with him on 23 of the episodes and was the animation director for the movie, it would be hard to claim that Tartakovsky isn't in some way responsible.

And animators seem to have a penchant for references like that, anyway.

Small bump here, to remind people of the *actual* best episode they've all forgotten.

While I can't remember it's precise name, those who have seen it would recognise it were I to call it "Jack and the Four Assassins."

It is an absolutely marvellous piece of art. The episode is 40 minutes long or so, and 39 minutes of it is pure build-up of tension. Little to no fighting, just Jack walking down a path and the four assassins saying how they're going to defeat him. Their plans become more and more intricate over the episode, until, eventually, they're sitting in silence waiting for him, and one of the assassins is hitting that water drop... drip..drip..drip...

And then, in the time it takes for a water droplet to fall from the roof to the floor, all the action of the whole episode happens, with an extremely high amount of awesome. And that's it.

So, basically, it's 39minutes of excited build-up followed by 30 seconds or so of incredible and irrefutable awesomeness. I'd like to compare it to sex, but I fear the whole 39 minute thing would be boasting.

I need to complete my Samurai Jack collection, so I can make bigger and better videos.

And I'm really sad I don't remember that episode clearly. The ending sounds familiar, but... GYAH.

Yeah, that episode owns. But are you sure it's a 44 minute ep? I'm pretty sure all Samurai Jack episodes are 22.

A similar concept is used in one of the segments in The Four Seasons of Death, IIRC. An entire civilization dedicates itself to destroying Jack, the entire society labouring to create this mighty sword, and participating in a giant tournament until only their greatest warrior survives and waits to face the Samurai. Jack cuts him in half in less than a second.

Yeah, I knew that he wouldn't have actually cut him in half since the dude wasn't a robot. Four Seasons is my favourite episode. I think the episode that guy is talking about is only a few before that one, actually. Basically the entire fourth season is insanely awesome.

Jack vs Aku.

"WE WILL MEET AT SUNRISE AT THE ANCIENT CITY BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DEAD!"
"Yes."
"..."
"Is that east, or west?"
"Huh? Oh, east."
"Oh, ok."
"You're sure you know where it is?"
"Yes, yes... yes, I remember now."
"I can give you a ride."
"No no, that's ok."

"No, that's all right."
"Ok then. WE WILL MEET AGAIN, SAMURAI JAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!"

They say parody is the highest form of flattery.

Tonight on Boomerang they showed the Duck Dodgers episode spoofing Samurai Jack called "Samurai Quack." In this episode, Dodgers eats a blow fish that is highly toxic, and begins to dream about being Samurai Quack, having to defeat the evil Achoo. They used the same guy who voiced Aku in the series to do the voice of Achoo, and Dodgers' Happy Cat Alarm Clock.

Here is the episode:

Samurai Jack is possibly the greatest animated work ever created in the West.

That is all.
An airplane, a puppet, an orange, a spoon,
A window, and outside: stars, and the moon.

Is this still on YTV in Canada at all?

I regret not watching more of it when I had the chance. All I had to do was turn on the TV half an hour before Inuyasha. (Or was it .hack/Sign back then? It's all such a blur.)

The new series is far more serious. Especially this "Episode 3". Episode 3 was just... brutal.

Spoiler:
Episode 1 had the singing robot assassin as comedic relief. It went basically as a classic Samurai Jack episode, Robot assassin with cool powers, etc. etc.

Episode 2 had Aku (and he's just always funny). But aside from those few minutes of Aku, the rest of the episode was disturbing.

Samurai Jack has never been a series this "dark". There's a lot of disturbing subjects being touched upon, straight up nightmare fuel that I don't really recall from the first series. I'm enjoying it however, so there's no complaints from me. But I can recall a lot of my friends talking about how the silly sense of humor of Samurai Jack was great (although I always thought the original series got too silly on occasion).

They're taking advantage of the "Adult Swim" timeslot for sure. This ain't a kids show no more.

I'd never watched SJ until this season, and the first ep I happened to watch was number 3. I didn't think it was meant to be at all funny until I watched eps 1 and 2 of this season. Even though I haven't seen the original, I'm familiar enough with Greg Baldwin's imitation of Mako from AtLA to miss Mako as Aku.

Season 5 finale:
Spoiler:
At first, I wondered why it took until the wedding for the time paradox to erase Ashi from existence. Then I figured that time paradoxes in SJ must work the same way gravity does in Looney Tunes: you can ignore it until you realize you're ignoring it, then it gets you. During the wedding, Jack thought about Ashi's dad not being there to give her away (or whatever role the bride's father plays in Japanese weddings), because he was dead, then realized that meant Ashi wouldn't be born.

I missed the first showing of the Finale, so it took me a while before I read your spoiler. Fortunately, there was a 2nd airing last week.

Spoiler:
Perhaps it wasn't as much "Looney Tunes" logic as it was all about "maximizing the feels". The most heartbreaking time for Ashi to disappear was during the wedding, so that's when it happened.

Personally speaking, I was expecting that Jack would run back to a Time Portal and start looking for Ashi in the future. We were promised "Future King Jack" in Season 3 damn it... and all we got were "The Time Guardian's" broken glasses on the floor in Season5-Episode 9. Clearly, the authors remembered the epic fight between Jack and the Guardian... but they didn't want to fulfill the reference.

Ah well. The Guardian Fight was one of the most surprising fights ever in the show. I wish that they gave that a bigger reference. Still, the finale had so many characters that I've forgotten about: from the "Mining Dogs", to the "Jump Good" people... everyone came together to help Jack at the end. The finale was awesome, no doubt about it, even if the Ashi x Jack romance was handled rather predictably and ham-fistedly.

Overall, it was a "compressed" season. It retains the Samurai Jack feel, but the story in Season 5 moves at a breakneck speed. True, the long, dramatic periods of silence remain in this show, which only make the dramatic moments feel a bit more rushed IMO. Nonetheless, it feels like none of my time was wasted watching any bit of any episode, which is a huge accomplishment.

I wish that more were done for Season 5, but overall, I'm happy that the series can have a complete ending finally... after so many years of waiting.

They could've had the season be split into 2 seasons, or even three. But I think the Samurai Jack team was just happy to get even one season to work with, in much the same way Whedon was lucky enough to get a single movie to tie up Firefly.
