Your favorite stand-up comedian? (Poll)

Postby Clumpy » Sun Jan 25, 2009 9:39 pm UTC

I've compiled some comedians who I feel have had quality stand-up careers. Naturally I've also included some comedians I don't particularly enjoy (even some whose style and persona I detest), but I'd like to invite the XKCD community to pick three of their favorites from the list.

A couple caveats: I'd like to ask you to pick the funniest comedians, not necessarily the most original or unique. Depending on your personality this may be the same thing. I should also note that some of these individuals have had stellar stand-up careers followed by terrible film careers. Please consider only their stand-up when making your choice. I'll update the poll from comments if somebody asks for an addition.

(I should add the polls are limited to 25 entries so I had to trim the list a bit. I'll keep track of the extras in this space. EDIT: I wasn't expecting this to get so ridiculously lengthy. By all means keep voting, but consider this an opportunity to discover some comedians you might have missed out on. It might end up pretty comprehensive.)

Part of the poll, but not on the list above:

Drew Carey (0)
Doug Stanhope (0)
Ricky Gervais (0)
David Cross (1)

Eddie Izzard and George Carlin of that list, but also Dara O'Briain, Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey (Why is he not on this list?) Phil Jupitus (though almost solely because of his routine on arachnophobia) and Ed Byrne, along with I'm sure more that I've forgotten.

In short, this poll is too American.

I'll assume you were being tongue-in-cheek, as your additions consist almost entirely of Irish comedians. The U.S. bias in my list can be attributed mainly to the fact that I included names I knew, and people aren't always exposed to a heck of a lot of comedy outside of their culture. Still, it wasn't exactly some boorish Engvall/Cook/Lawrence list.

How did I forget Jupitus? I've added your recommendations and I'll definitely be checking out their material. That's another purpose of this poll if nothing else.

Point 1: I was not being tongue-in-cheek.
Point 2: 3 out of 5 is not almost entirely Irish.
Point 3: I am not from Ireland, I have no bias. Them Irish boys is just funny.
Point 4: I fail to see how I am not allowed to say the poll is too American because most of my suggestions were... not American?
Point 5: No pooftahs!
Point 6: THERE IS NO POINT SIX!

OK - hope you didn't think that I was being too serious. I've added some more non-U.S. comedians that totally slipped my mind for some reason (I forget Atkinson and Kitson!?). I actually feel kind of bad that so many of these talented U.K./Irish/Indian/whatever comedians have been left out of the clickable list.

Ah, yes. I'll go ahead and add the other names I was putting off (just joshing you, brah). I went ahead and assumed that your recommendation was also a vote for each (I won't get too hung up about the names in the list since they're likely to receive less votes anyway not being part of the poll).

Billy Connolly! I just discovered this man's existence a short time ago and have almost exhausted what I could find of him on YouTube. He's the sort that says things funny, as much as saying funny things. I could memorise his jokes and tell them to others, but it just wouldn't be the same without his caffeinated delivery.

For the record, I did find three to vote for in the poll's options. I didn't find out about MItch Hedberg until after he died, but what a gem. (With hindsight, it was fairly obvious from his performances that he was headed toward the suicide option. Not a man who looked comfortable with himself, or with life. It was a sobering reminder to look after myself, mentally/emotionally as well as physically.)
In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

I'll cast a vote for Russell Peters and George Lopez. (I also voted for Chris Rock in the options above.)

Russell Peters is my personal favorite. But these are the three guys I can listen to anytime and still enjoy. ...there're also a few on the list which I really don't like (which is inevitable, when it comes to comedy). KF

I really don't see the point of having a poll like this, although I did find the Americanity of the list hilarious. I don't think you've mentioned any of my top 10.

We already have a favourite comedian thread, for what it's worth.

Dylan Moran
Bill Bailey
John Cleese
Billy Connolly

Why is Bill Bailey on your list twice?

Not that I mind, he's my favourite. Jack Dee would probably be my second favourite. Although to be honest I haven't really seen many comedians doing stand up... I didn't know John Cleese actually did stand-up comedy?

At the risk of mucking around with the results (not that I overestimate my own influence), I've been eating up everything I can find by Stewart Lee as well as Daniel Kitson. For many Americans who grew up with Monty Python, Blackadder and Red Dwarf, an English accent is almost the voice of comedy. Of course, this doesn't guarantee quality any more than with American comedians (Jim Davidson in particular is a hack), but I think British comedy tends to be a little more erudite and sophisticated than mainstream American humor (read: that douche with the puppets, Dane Cook).

And this Andy Kaufman video is sublime.

For the record, I voted for Patton Oswalt, Maria Bamford and Mitch Hedberg. I cheated a bit in the list by voting for three people instead of two - Lee Stewart, Kitson and Coogan.

Phill wrote:Why is Bill Bailey on your list twice?

Fixed. He's now fourth overall, first in the list.

Phill wrote:I didn't know John Cleese actually did stand-up comedy?

He's done just a little solo work, though I fudged a bit and included his work with the Python stage show in my consideration. It seemed unfair not to include John who did just as much writing and in-depth performing as any stand-up.

Another vote here for Bill Bailey, who has been at the top of my favourite comedians list for the last 10 years and, based on his last show, I see no sign of him moving from there any time soon!

That said, I agree with the poster who said the Irish have a knack for comedy, amongst my favourites would also be Dylan Moran and Andrew Maxwell.

Bill Bailey is awesome - I went to see his "Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra" show at the Brighton Dome a few months ago and it was incredible; by turns hilarious and educational. He was accompanied by the 72 piece BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, which was pretty cool

George Lopez is an unfunny fellow of Mexican persusasion. Somehow people keep perpetuating the stereotype Lopez is funny.

Dane Cook stole a lot of humor from George Carlin. Updating this is slightly tiresome, but I'll keep it up. I think I subverted my own notion of a poll by putting 50+ names into it, most with only one vote. Too many comedians.

My favorites so far would have to be Patton Oswalt, Simon Munnery, Stewart Lee, Brian Regan, Andy Kaufman, Maria Bamford and Eddie Izzard. John Stewart is actually a very good standup, but he doesn't do it often enough. And Jon Hodgman is also quite funny but more of a speaker than a straight-up comedian.

I love Mitch Hedburg. That being said, I think he has been romanticized a little. I seem to get more laughs remembering the jokes and retelling them with friends then when I actually listen to him nowadays.

I also like Mike Birbiglia, Demetri Martin (and I can't wait for his new show either), Jim Gaffigan, Dave Chapelle, David Cross, Robbin Williams, and Steve Martin.

And for Carlos Mencia, I have never liked him, but one time I was watching comedy central and they had his performance from when he was still an unknown. Granted, it wasn't hilarious, but I still found it tons better than the stuff he does today, and that depressed me that he seemed like a decent guy with a career ahead of him, and then he pretty much sold out cause people like the loudness and racial jokes.
Take me back to the day that I went blind, I would like to see your face for one last time.
