Prompted by the thread title:

Advertising can get to a point where I feel so much disgust that I don't even want to have anything to do with the product any more.

Avatar was like that for me. I simply didn't want to watch it any more.

Then I did anyway against that feeling and I didn't regret it.

Oh and it's proper disgusting what's happening in the "Milking the customer" department now.

-> Original Movie
-> Single DVD + Maxi DVD + Maxi BD
-> Extended Movie
-> Special Edition BD
-> Exclusive Locked-to-TV-purchase 3D BD
-> (pre-Avatar-II-theatrical Movie rerun)
-> 3D BD
-> Avatar II Movie
-> (3D Special Edition BD)
-> (Avatar II Single DVD + Maxi DVD + Maxi BD)
-> (Extended Avatar II)
-> (Maxi Avatar I+II Bundle DVD + BD)
-> (Super Hyper Ultimate Steel Box All You Can Eat Avatar I+II Final Director's Cut 12-disc BD)
-> Avatar III announced, rinse and repeat.

Nota bene: I like the movie. I just hate the marketing.

Tron Legacy is now trying to do the same. I already hate it, and I wanted to go watch it before that horribe Hype Machine went into high gear.

And at the same time, some movies, are under- or even misadvertised, e. g. Legend of Guardians.

You forgot the novel.

...Yes, there is a novel. I'm not helping, am I? :P

Yes, and the video games for all the major platforms, all of which seem to have been quite forgotten at this point.

(The first time I'd heard anything about 3D televisions for home use was in a review for the Avatar PS3 game, actually.)

At least it's not the hip Halloween costume this year. Is it? No, wait, I don't want to know.

Is there going to be comic adaptation of the novel? Are they going to release the comic as 6 page serials, then as a hard bound book, then as a bigger hardback book, and then as multiple paperbacks?

Also, I bet the games have online stores where you can spend real money on in game items.

Besides over-marketing, most forums have at least one member who has an Avatar signature, and an Avatar avatar. I wonder why avatar would even get fans.

Well, I've got an Avatar avatar on a different forum because I wanted to make the appropriate Yo Dawg joke.

And I think Avatar got fans mostly because it's almost entirely concentrated wish fulfillment, even if it is mildly racist.

Well, there are online stores selling them. ...Should I just shut up now? :P

(And if anyone is interested in that fanfic, it's up here. If you happen to recognize the name Ogilvy, you can probably tell where the plot's going. )
