the only thing i found thought provoking about Death Note was what i would do with one, lol.

Comic relief isn't a bad thing. I just don't want it to be primarily a comedy.

Thought-provoking was the wrong word... I suppose I'm looking for cerebral.

I prefer anime to manga because I can usually get anime for for free :P

Ghost in the Shell and 2nd GiG are definitely your thing then. One of the very few anime that deals with complex themes without coming off as pretentious or out of its depth. Also, it has totally awesome yet believable sci-fi technology.

I think one of my friends has some Ghost in Shell DVDs. Maybe I should ask him if I can borrw them (aswell as some of the Diskworld books he has). BTW, Anybody seen the Rebuild of Evangelion movies? Dunno if there's a subbed version availeable of them, but a new version of NGE with a slightly less mindscrew of an ending interests me. Not that mindscrews are bad, but when you need to watch the movie and read all the background material (much of which isn't even published here) in order to make any sence at all of what happens, and even then you're left wondering what exactly all that was about, you can't help feelign they could have explained things a little better.

Anyone know a good list of new anime or currently-on-the-air anime that I could consult for my japan-o-phile needs?

Subs are available for the first rebuild movie. Not sure about the rest.

P.S. It's pretty awesome.

Soul Eater - The funniest anime I have ever seen in my life. Is also incredibly well animated, is unbeaten in fight scene quality, has really, really great visual design (huge, maniacal faces for the sun and moon, amazing character designs), fantastic writing and voice acting... Yeah, probably one of my favourite anime, not just that are currently airing, but ever.

Natsume Yuujinchou - Some dude (Natsume), has the ability to see spirits, and is something of a social outcast because of it. One day he meets this crazy little cat thing (who totally sounds like Cartman and is hilarious), and discovers that 60 years ago or whatever his grandmother, who could also see spirits, went around kicking spirit ass and stealing their names. He inherits a book of the names, and decides to give them all back.

So it's basically as if your typical shonen anime occurred 60 years ago, and now Natsume is going around cleaning up the mess. He travels around the country-side, helping spirits out, solving their problems, resolving arguments, and so on. It's the most peaceful possible thing - crickets are always chirping, the sun is always shining, everyone's soft spoken. Natsume uses conflict resolution to solve problems. If anyone is a bad guy at the start of the episode, they're a friend by the end of it. It's a nice, peaceful contrast to most of what I watch.

Code Geass R2 - The sequel season to Code Geass. I don't even know how to begin describing this.

Those are what I'm watching that's currently on air.

Going to have to agree with that, I wouldn't say it all that funny. But we need more fight scenes like this. I love how it doesn't switch views, or do really close angles, or "chargin' my laser" shit, which is what most anime fight scenes I see are like.

The only anime I've seen do Close Angle's+Swithing Views Alot well is early Black Cat.

Just the first fight scene.

I would like to add to my list of Films That I Like from wayyy back on Page II the film Paprika. It's by the same guy who did Perfect Blue, save that it is actually hopeful in some ways! hooray

It's a very interesting story on the nature of dreams and reality, and what happens when those two intersect. Very cool stuff. My only real gripe with it is that
Spoiler:
Chiba ends up with the fat slob at the end. It's not so much the fat slob thing as it is that there's literally no development here. To me, it's established that they're friends, kinda, but she gets really mad at him a lot. There's no romantic subtext that -I- see at all, and so suddenly having them get married was jarring.
she should have gone with the cop.

I didn't think it was that weird.

Spoiler:
The fat guy clearly fancies "At-chan" a lot. I think she always fancied him too, but was always too much of a cold fish to admit it - otherwise she wouldn't care enough to get so worked up about his childish behaviour or berate him about his weight.

I'm more into the Comedy "Slice of Life" humor type anime. For instance Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Lucky Star, etc.

Who would ever care about the ecchi? Esp. if it's part of the comedy.

Edit: GG now I want Maka posters, also posters of Maka in the 2nd ED (I think it's 2nd).

I sometimes care about the ecchi. There's a line, I tolerate it ok in a comedy (not by choice, but because you sorta have to if you like anime), but there's a certain point where it takes over the plot and I'm thinking--what a waste of animation.

Honestly, I don't care if there are panties or outright nudity in anime, but gratuitous fan service can get grating. Particularly if it's otherwise a comedic or light romance anime.

Mostly, as of late, I read manga though--and I find it's less of a problem because there's such a huge variety.

Typical anime response to being surprised by a hot chick is getting a blood nose...

And you're watching a VERY BAD SUB if they translate her name as "Brea" it's actually "Blair" (as in Blair Witch Project)...

Yes, but "Blair" makes me think of Tony Blair (and I'd rather not).

I just finished Gunbuster (slower than slowpoke, I know) and it was pretty amazing. I didn't really feel the downgraded animation (black and white, letterbox, wtf?) detracted too much from the final episode, and if it did "OKAERINASAI" easily made up for it.

Downloading Diebuster now

I'm watching Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei now. It doesn't really have a plot, it's just about a suicidal teacher who sees everything in the most negative possible way, and his class of misfits. Also, Code Geass references on blackboards and class notices.

Downloaded season one last week, and it rocks. Not only is it filled with dark humour and random stuff, the animation is beautiful and the ending theme kicks ass. However, the fact that I haven't found any place where I could download season 2 has left me in despair!

I got a link to a site which has a torrent for season 2. Woo!

Speaking of fauvorite characters, I'd have to say Nozomu himself is my fauvorite. Out of the girls, pretty hard to choose (I'd end up naming half the cast)...Does the girl who appears at the end of episode 5 count (she did also appear in episode 2, I think)? Come on, I can't be the only one who found that scene HOT! Then again, I am the only fanged horror with a very negative view of humanity I know, and the scene probably wouldn't have the same effect on non-fhwvnvh:s.

Have to say my fav character would be Chiri. For some reason, I can relate to her - it is indeed much more annoying to cut a cake (and strawberries) into 5 than it is into 4 and even MORE annoying if the portions are uneven.

It's been too long since I've seen the first season. You're going to have to give me a name or personality disorder for me to know who you're talking about. Also, Kiri-chan for teh win.

I like Chiri-chan just because she is fucking crazy as hell. Komori-chan because she is easily the most beautiful. Maria-chan because everyone loves Maria-chan hahahahaha. Also I really like Chie-sensei's voice for some reason.

Also, I don't think there was a char introduced in 1x05 but there was in 2x05, which was Ai Kaga the Guilt Complex Girl, is that who you're talking about Nomic?

Don't think the girl from end of episode 5 even has a name. She appears right in the end and you only see half of her face (I'm pretty sure she also appearred during the tea seremony in ep.2, but they didn't mention her name there eighter). All she actually does is say that from the planet's point of view humans are the toxins, and the world should be "de-toxed". Then she smiles, revealing more pointy teeth than I have. It was just a throwaway gag, but still, this girl shares my view of the world AND makes my teeth look normal! What's not to like?

On a serious note, I'd have to say my fauvorite girl is eighter Komori, Chiri or maybe Kafuka, for the reasons listed in the previous posts. Also, Kafuka is totally crazy. She's clearly in denial and I wouldn't want to be anywhere near her when she finally snaps.

Btw, wasn't Ai Kaga introduced in the last episode of season one?

Yeah that's right, but I meant the last bit of 1x05 wasn't about any particular girl whereas 2x05 was. In any case I'll have to see it again to know if that girl has a name or not.

And yeah, my guess is either Kafuka...

(1) Is Fucking Crazy As Hell
(2) Has a Doppelganger! (Oh noes!)

Edit: Also I love Rin xD.

Edit2: The person talking before the "Are you going to detox?" is Chiri, the person who said "Are you going to Detox?" is Kafuka, the person who smiled with the crazy teeth is probably Chiri, confirming that she is going to "Detox" (she says she realises that Humans are a toxin).
