My Little Pony: Friendship is MAGIC!

Postby superglucose » Fri Mar 04, 2011 4:52 am UTC

This here is episode 1.

For those of you who don't know, this show is the latest revival of the My Little Pony franchise. It is written or drawn by the author or artist responsible for the Powerpuff Girls.

If you don't know me, I am highly critical of TV shows, cartoons in particular. Most of the crap that gets shoved in the face of our kids these days shows nothing but extraordinarily shoddy writing with absolute crap characters, etc. The plight of the modern cartoon is indeed sad. Fortunately, My Little Pony shows us not only that Friendship is Magic, but that there is hope for the next generation's animated entertainment!

Hopefully you guys will get as hooked as I am. After all, Fluttershy is one of the greatest singers of all time!

The animation is really pretty, but I don't like these super-deformed look ponies, even the toys have started heading that direction :(

<3 Applejack, she was the main character in a storybook I had as a kid.

I wish more of the "main characters" were not unicorns or pegasus; the Rainbow Dash toy wasn't a pegasus, just a regular pony *grump grump damn kids on my lawn*

also surprisingly internet savvy and responsive to fandom
The character design is also pretty diverse given the restraints.

At PAX East this morning, during the Q&A, someone mentioned My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and the theater erupted in cheering and applause. I did too.

It's like Tiny Toons, but with six girls instead of three boys and three girls. The main characters are an asocial grad student, a hick who manages her family farm, an OCD dressmaker, a very shy wildlife caretaker, a LEEEEEROY JENKINS! weather-changing athlete, and a baker's apprentice who isn't very good at baking, but throws the best parties in town.

It's better than Transformers Prime, with smarter, more fleshed-out characters. It has Flash animation that rivals the hand-drawn stuff from the 90's.

Show head is Lauren Faust, animator on Cats Don't Dance and Iron Giant, and storyboarder/writer/director of episodes of Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home. Frankie Foster is based on her.

Story Editor is Rob Renzetti, creator of My Life As A Teenage Robot, also a storyboarder/writer/director on PPG and Foster's Home.

Lauren, Rob, Craig McCracken, and Genndy Tartakovsky are responsible for 90% of the best cartoons of the last decade. They all went to CalArts.

If you consider yourself a fan of cartoons and animation, you owe it to yourself to see this show. It is superior in every way.

I recommend you start with the following: Applebuck Season, Griffon the Brush-Off, Sonic Rainboom. Then go to the series two-part premiere, and watch it in order from that point.

I tried to convince my roommate to start watching, but I started with an episode I hadn't seen before Swarm of the Century, which was very boring plot and character development wise and now he feels totally justified in thinking that I am crazy for liking it.

There's a law about that sort of thing.. I don't know the name of it, but it states more or less that if you rave about a show and a friend doesn't seem interested by your description, if you do get the friend to agree to watch an episode the episode that airs will be, hands down, the worst episode of that show.

Like convincing someone to watch the next TNG episode, and Genesis comes on...

It's vaguely related to the law that states that if there's a show you want to see but never remember when it's on/are always busy, then when you do catch the random episode here and there, it will always be the same episode.

The parasprites were adowable and there were some funny parts, but the plot was just a simplified and repetitive Trouble With Tribbles and there wasn't really any character development. By the third time Pinkie Pie showed up looking for instruments it was really clear that she had the solution and no one else was going to realize it until she saves the day at the dramatic climax.

The ponies look like they're from Powerpuff Girls; the backgrounds from Samurai Jack. Nice combo.

It's become almost a Grifter type video, a lot of people don't even think it's real. It's really infamous, something you have to experience at least once.

The quantity of 'adult' jokes has been increasing, and the last episode was great for that.

Today's should be good.

I got into because of my little sister, and now I'm hooked.

Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash are really the show makers for me because I feel like the writers use them as humor dumps. Whenever they get lines, it's always hilarious.

I think that this is one of those shows that is trying to establish itself as a literal family show in terms of entertainment for everyone, and I really like it!

I had heard about this show a couple times, and thought, I really ought to see it sometime.

Then I went into this forum and saw this topic here. And found the link to Episode 1...

I had no idea... it would be... THIS AWESOME.

Thank you xkcd forumites for converting me! ^.^

The show itself is brilliant and endearing, but nearly as interesting has been the internet's reaction. I first found the show when I read about the tizzy to which 4chan was driven last month by their constituency's growing pony fanbase. (Pretty good summary at Know Your Meme.) Basically, you go to the most nasty, casually audacious corner of the internet, center of anonymous culture, and a major fraction just decides they're tired of shock and snark, and they want to be nice instead. So strange!

Also, this.

The parody dubs are hilarious, I'll admit, and it's nice to see something vaguely wholesome catch on so strongly.

But I've watched the premiere and Applebuck Season now, and I feel like I've been, shall we say, punk'd ? This is... not compelling.
