Don't know if it's in here, but Me first and the Gimme Gimme's are a cover band. They take old songs and speed it up while redoing the genre and giving it a very punk feel.

Two of my favorites are Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Phantom of The Opera, although I really love their Phantom of the Opera cover

Couldn't agree more. Their tour dates are listed as last weekend :-P

But they put on such a good show and they sound amazing. Just wish I had been awake enough to stick around for the rest of the magfest show :-(

Listening to Act 2 alright, now at the 3rd track, Father of Death. Mind is completely blown. The Good Doctor was sex. This track is just as good. Soo good.

Is it allowed to post bands that WERE very famous, but that was so long ago that no one remembers them anymore? Hell, I don't think most of my peers even know who the Kinks are.

What, really? Just about everyone I know is familiar with their bigger hits at the very least, with a number easily described as fans (myself included). I would say posting bands that were big but aren't now would open up a can of worms in this thread, and would inevitably leading to some kid posting The Beatles, because they're the only person they know who listens to them. And that would just be silly.

I don't know how obscure he is in the wider world, but The Tallest Man on Earth is pretty obscure in Australia, or at least Melbourne- insofar as I know, our public radio station, indie radio station, and trendy commercial indie- playing station haven't played him, and nobody I know has heard of him.

This song by him has got to be the most beautiful murder song ever written.

Brilliant Fanzine are a pretty mediocre band whose first EP I absolutely loved. It's made cooler by the fact that the album art is a painting of half the face of somebody who looks exactly- EXACTLY- like I looked at the time I bought the album (ie before facial hair took over my face). I used to have a photo of me holding up the album so my face and the art overlapped, and it was incredibly uncanny.

tUnE-yArDs is the music project of New England native Merrill Garbus. When performing live, Garbus creates drum loops on the spot, and layers these with ukulele, voice, and electric bass (played by Nate Brenner). The "w h o k i l l" tour will add a saxophone section.

Freakin' love tUnE-yArDs (or is it TuNe-YaRdS?) whichever one goes "Don't take my life away!! Don't take my life away!!" is my favourite. It's like she's Jamie Woon's younger, more energetic, more talented little sister.

Finally found out the name of that tune that I heard a few years ago (thank you, Shazam), and I couldn't believe it's Lover's Carvings by Bibio. I've had the album the whole time! Is dude big around here? He might be big. I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse.

There's also a band called Friends who are exceptionally hard to Google, and information is hardly forthcoming. Spotify only has one or two songs, too.

What about bands that are really popular within a specific subset of people but not well-known anywhere else? e.g. Tribal Tech

I say this because I see bands mentioned like Telefon Tel Aviv and Tallest Man on Earth that are very well-known among my circle of friends, but almost everyone I know is either a musician or a music nerd and they've also heard of people like Brian Blade.

I don't think Jonny Mathis is too obscure and Strawberry Alarm Clock definitely isn't - "Incense and Peppermints" at least around here is a staple of mainstream rock radio.

Here where I live, I've introduced S.A.C. to many people who actually listen to some similar, yet more mainstream stuff (e. g. Jefferson Airplane).
My boyfriend introduced me to "Wonderful Wonderful". He heard it in an X files episode. Either of us hasn't heard (of) him elsewhere.
