Points for that one. I didn't think I'd run into anyone else who enjoyed Gogol Bordello. They're such a strange mix of styles. Always put a smile on my face when I hear them. Really fun band to listen to.

Hmmm. This is tough call. If I can only recommend one band I'm going to have to go with Against Me! They kick all kinds of ass. They've gotten a bit more exposure since they signed with Sire/Warner Bros but most people still haven't heard of them. Tom Gabel writes kick ass tunes. Rare mix of good music and meaningful lyrics. Seeing it's Christmas and all, I'll recommend 8-bit Jesus by Doctor Octoroc. 8-bit chiptune versions of Christmas songs, like "Ryu the Red-Nosed Ninja".

Artist: Mychildren Mybride. Song title: Headshot!

If you like metal and Halo Multiplayer, you should listen to this song!

Recommend one artist Re: Jim Morrison

Postby Scythe of Vyse » Sat Dec 20, 2008 11:19 pm UTC

Jim Morrison. One of best Singers, Songwriters. Born in Melbourne, Florida, the son of a naval officer. A voracious reader of books, he started a rock band with fellow student Ray Manzarek after he graduated. They quickly found two more members, Robby Krieger and John Densmore. Dubbed with the name "The Doors" it quickly found fame in the Rock and Roll music world with their music constantly topping the music charts. Jim Morrison developed a unique singing voice and became the lead singer of the group. His life style leaned on mysticism while engaging in drugs, alcohol and bizarre behavior leading to many legal confrontations with the law.
But one is sure! He was a great artist!

Would that be the same Jim Morrison that inspired the song by Mogwai "I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead"?

There Finnish, some say they're emo. But I disagree their sound is very original and deserves its own genre, Love Metal.

also, I'm going to go out on a limb and ask how do you make the links into words?

Green Day
A song I recommend is "Going to Pasalacqua" (off of their first LP, "1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours")

Or "Haushinka" (Off of Nimrod)

Of course, they have too many awesome songs and I couldn't pick "the best" because they're all too awesome. I suggest you just go out and buy all their albums NAO.

The Rocket Summer Piano Pop

Bryce Avary's band.
He records all the instruments and sings, but for live shows gets a full band.
He's released three albums and an EP so far and has some of the catchiest enjoyable tunes i've ever heard.

A little bit of ben folds.
His voice has a little bit of Michael Jackson.
And has you just want to go out and do something.

Also puts on a kicking awesome show.

Sufjan Stevens.

It is very difficult to recommend just one song, he's a bizzarre mix of everything ever, his songs range from fun and joyful to the most depressing I have ever heard. I can't think of a comparison, but perhaps it is fun modern folk or classical music that isn't 'folky' at all, he is quite a popular artist. Perhaps a tiny bit like Beirut.

Try 'Chicago' 'For the widows in paradise...' or 'Concerning the UFO sighting near Highland' which is the song that got me into him.

I'm surprised no one had recommended Pink Floyd yet (either that or the search engine conspires against me). It's probably because everybody knows Pink Floyd, but still... it's time to correct this mistake.

Here're a video from band's psychedelic period, with Syd Barrett. The song is Interstellar Overdrive, noted for it's long improvisational section and distinctive guitar work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUHMltEOLds

And here's another, from the band's last concert at the Live 8, probably the last time they were ever together. The song is Breathe, from iconic Dark Side of the Moon album, which made "Pink Floyd" synonymous to "progressive rock".

Lately I've been listening to a whole lot of Diary of Dreams.

They are classified as gothic, but I would definitely consider it more dark electronic. I've been listenin to them since I was 16 (am 24 now) and they still put out albums that are truly stunning, to me at least. :)

Washington Irving. Somewhere in between The Pogues and Beirut, they blend together eastern European melodies, traditional folk rock, gloriously indie pop, strong accented Scottish vocals and general amazingness.

Well for all time favourite it would have to be Captain Beefheart, in my opinion second only to the Beatles in influentiality, but the music is not to everybodys taste. In fact the Amazon page for Trout Mask Replica has 222 5stars and 119 1stars with about 50 inbetween. A real favourite of John Peel (if any of you know him, very famous British DJ), and some of the most haunting and complex music I have ever heard.
Heres a clip of their early years, very bluesy before he became really avant-garde, and a seriously class performance. Check that voice!
