"You Never Let Go" by Matt Redman.

BQ: That's like asking a parent which child is their favourite... that being said, while I love David Tennant, I'd have to sat Matt Smith. Keep in mind that I have yet to watch the original run, though it's on my to-do list.

True. I don't think they have confirmed whether Shawn or Ben will be back; I know Shawn has been doing shows with Boyz II Men.

Deep down inside, I wish Regina Spektor would be a judge. I don't know how that would turn out, but I think I'd die from joy.

My favorite judge was Shawn, if only because we share a love of altos, but if they replace them all, I will still be just elated that it is back.

So I'll admit to profiling the hell out of you, having seen pictures of long-haired, eyeliner and trenchcoat-clad you in some picture here recently, and made the guess that you listened to metal. So I looked up The Human Equation and I am fucking confused. It goes from REPO-esque musical singing to some simple metal to operatic singing and what I don't even. This is like four genres in one and I don't know how to feel about it.

I should point out that the trenchcoat is a friends (sadly) and the eyeliner was unusual :P

Still, you are correct. I am very much at the folk/prog/power/symphonic end of the metal spectrum than those most people tend to associate with the label "metal". Anyway, to me, that Human Equation is prog metal seems fairly clear. The thing is of course that that sort of label inherently encompasses a wide range of styles. Human Equation in particular embraces this far more than most of Arjen's work because of its premise with the different emotions being used as characters as me's changing state of mind (and the style of music/singing varies to reflect this).

The thing is that Arjen certainly did not set out to write a prog metal album. He set out to write an opera and the genre he most readily expresses himself is prog metal. Human Equation necessitates some deviation from this (moreso than his other albums I think) and so is quite confusing when trying to classify it (it's not even always easy to place individual songs in a specific genre).

The Ayreon albums do vary quite a lot, but I think that 01011001 is more representative of the sound I think of when I think about Ayreon.

I do like the Repo! comparison (although I only saw it for the first time on Monday). Some of the songs are certainly very similar in style (Trauma and 21st Century Cure have a lot in common with the combination of relatively subdued expository passages punctuated with sudden power notes) and both are definitely modern operas in my mind (and good examples of such).

The Final Experiment, Into the Electric Castle and the two Universal Migrator albums are also definitely modern operas in my mind. 01011001 is less clearly one and I think only makes sense as an opera if considered as part of the overall Ayreon saga.

Anyway, yes. They are confusing from a genre point of view.

Me and a couple of friends were briefly talking about the idea of staging the Human Equation. We thought it would work pretty well (probably moreso than any of the other Ayreon albums) and the comparison to Repo! only makes me more confident in that. No idea if anything will ever happen from this, but it would be cool.

Anyway, more OT:

I've been listening to the Repo! soundtrack lately.

At the moment, Megalithic Symphony (in its entirety) by AWOLNATION.
First impressions? Not bad, not bad at all.

Recently, Pink Floyd - DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Obscured By Clouds, The Wall, Meddle, Animals, The Division Bell.
Atom Heart Mother and earlier are too crazy/psychedelic, The Final Cut just sounds too up itself, A Momentary Lapse of Reason is just a collection of songs. The Division Bell seems like "proper" Floyd again. The Wall is at least a side too long, too - although my favourite album is Wish You Were Here, so what do I know? :P

Before that, Daft Punk - Random Access Memories. Amazing album, also the first album I've ever pre-ordered. Marks a more mature direction for Daft Punk, but not an unwelcome change by any means.

Incubus - Surface to Air

I really, really, really wish the studio version of this track was on the normal edition of the album. Almost to the point of wanting to download the mp3 from iTunes or something. I bought the stupid Deluxe edition with the live version, which I guess I shouldn't complain too much about since I very well may not have ever known about it otherwise, but still, I'm not a huge fan of live tracks unless it's a particularly awesome one. Though currently, I'm seriously obsessed with this song due to it being an absolutely perfect articulation of how I'm feeling in life as of late... sigh.

BUT ALSO, in related news, my obsession has led me to this soundcheck of the song, during which Brandon claims that B4* is the highest note he's ever tried to sing. Somehow I suspect he's being at least slightly facetious, but HOLY SHATBRIX, does this mean that I have a similar vocal range to his?! Cause I can totally hit that note, and sometimes even successfully, though my voice usually cracks right at the end of it. And then I'm a little sad. I should really stop smoking, and practice projecting my falsetto a lot even moreso than I already do. You know, and stuff... or something. And junk. (Also, duck.)

* - Yes, I did have to check both on my keyboard and Google/Wikipedia just to make sure I'm accurate. Also, I could probably ramble on a lot longer, but I fear that if I begin a fourth paragraph then I may enter some sort of feedback loop and not be able to stop myself. Yes, I'm just being incredibly weird, now. Click the Submit button already, you fuck!

Queens of the Stone Age - Fairweather Friends

Man, I don't know what it is about this song, but the harmony they do at the beginning (and in the background throughout) has been stuck in my head all day. That and the whole tone of the song. The new album is full of songs that are supposed to be about feelings found at the bottom of the barrel, but this one is the only one that has a positive ring for me; like remembering a revelatory moment.

LCD Soundsystem - All I Want

I normally listen pretty much exclusively to guitar-driven rock, metal and prog, and dance music doesn't do much for me, but for some reason I absolutely love (most) LCD Soundsystem, and it always makes me want have to move. I can't listen to an LCD Soundsystem album and not dance.
