Songs that define you today

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Songs that define you today

Postby Belgernon » Tue Oct 09, 2007 1:41 am UTC

From day to day, there seems to be a different song that really just hits home with how I'm feeling that day depending on what's going on. I thought it would be cool to see what other people are listening to and why they're listening to it at that time. So, if you want, tell what song that you identify with in the moment and put up some lyrics. For me right now, it's The Shins - New Slang. I've had some recent girl issues involving a girl that I dated earlier this year, but still kind of have feelings for.

Gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth.
Only, I don't know how they got out, dear.
Turn me back into the pet that i was when we met.
I was happier then with no mind-set.

And if you'd 'a took to me like
A gull takes to the wind.
Well, i'd 'a jumped from my tree
And i'd a danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries.
Hope it's right when you die, old and bony.
Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall,
Never should have called
But my head's to the wall and I'm lonely.

And if you'd 'a took to me like
A gull takes to the wind.
Well, i'd 'a jumped from my tree
And i'd a danced like the kind of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

God speed all the bakers at dawn may they all cut their thumbs,
And bleed into their buns 'till they melt away.

I'm looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find.
Without a trust or flaming fields am i too dumb to refine?
And if you'd 'a took to me like
Well i'd a danced like the queen of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well.

This is probably the best song to describe my life.

Minus the Bear- Drilling wrote:This is us on a western Atlantic coast
with no place to be
just taking in the sea

Tonight with a constant buzz
we're staring at the ocean crashing on
all the rocks below
in this foreign home

This old story
when we're gone I feel I'll never miss anyone
and you lay on the grass along the edge

"Is this a dream,"
you ask and I don't say anything
because this may be a dream

And we come to this place
like two convicts that have escaped
from the prison of everyday
and for the moment we'll have our stay

This old story
when we're gone I feel I'll never miss anyone
and you lay on the grass along the edge

You know that tomorrow comes like disease to us

From this cliff's edge the gulls fly below us
diving into the sea below us
and I'm not cold tonight beside you, beside you
and we're not cold tonight

This old story
when we're gone I feel I'll never miss anyone
this old story
expatriate, you're coming home

Mogwai - New Paths to Helicon (Pt. 1)

It just does.

wikikipedia wrote:The song begins with almost inaudible guitar, heavily delayed and reverberated, playing a descending three note melody. At (0:25), a bass riff (based around the chords of D major and B minor) enters. At (1:00), slightly distorted, heavily delayed and reverberated guitars begin playing along to the bass riff, swooping in and out. At (1:34), a relaxed, slow drum beat begins. At (2:50), all of the instruments pause for a brief second, then explode into loud guitar-driven noise, backed by a steady, heavy drumbeat (to which every snare drum beat is accompanied by a tambourine clash). At (4:28), the distorted guitars and drums end, leaving the soft bass riff to close the song, aided by the guitar melody heard at the start of song, all of which gradually fade out.

why did this get moved? Because it's music-related.

Oh, it varies from the song based on what's in my signature, "Heart we will forget him" (thoughtfully and sweetly written by Dickinson and composed by Copland) to probably "Dear March -- Come in!" (another Dickinson/Copland, more lively and bustling).

New Slang is an exceptional song, and it was what I was coming into this post to respond with.

I'll select "So Says I" by the Shins.

An address to the golden door
I was strumming on a stone again
Pulling teeth from the pimps of gore when hatched
A tragic opera in my mind...
And it told of a new design
In which every soul is duty bound
To uphold all the statues of boredom therein lies
The fatal flaw of the red age

Because it was nothing like we'd ever dremt
Our lust for life had gone away with the rent we hated
And because it made no money nobody saved no one's life.

So we burned all our uniforms
And let nature take its course again
And the big ones just eat all the little ones
That sent us back to the drawing board.

In our darkest hours
We have all asked for some
Angel to come
Sprinkle his dust all around
But all our crying voices they can't turn it around
And you've had some crazy conversations of your own.

We've got rules and maps and guns in our backs
But we still can't just behave ourselves
Even if to save our own lives so, says I, WE ARE A BRUTAL KIND.

Cuz this is nothing like we'd ever dremt
Tell Sir Thomas More we've got another failed attempt
Cuz if it makes them money they might just give you life this time.

Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know

I've given everything I need
I'd give you everything I own
I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone
I've given everything I could
To blow it to hell and gone
Burrow down in and
Blow up the outside world

Someone tried to tell me something
Dont let the world get you down
Nothing will do me in before I do myself
So save it for your own and the ones you can help

Want to make it understood
Wanting though I never would
Trying though I know its wrong
Blowing it to hell and gone
Wishing though I never could
Blow up the outside world

25 Hour Goddamned Telethon - Bomb The Music Industry!

No matter where you go to you can still sit on a couch.
You can still sleep 'til it's dark outside.
You can still just hang around.
You can still not make new friends.
You can ignore the ones you have.
You can always ostracize yourself.
You can forget how to laugh.

Problems are all I create.
I live in four month mistakes.

So can we leave today and start the next mistake or are we fucked this time? Can we not go away?

Upon my last trip back there I remembered why I left.
All their flakiness, my shakiness, the friends I've never met.
But I didn't feel relief.
In fact I just felt more regret.
With a higher wage and a Metrocard I could deal with loneliness.

And in four months when it finally gets warmer,
I'll have already planned more disorder.
When I'm comfortable and feel like I'm in my place,
I'll be on my next mistake.

Another boring story, another problem self-imposed.
So can we leave today and start the next mistake or are we fucked this time? Can we not go away?
Blah blah blah problems self-imposed blah blah blah problems self imposed
And I know I'm not dead because I just threw up in my own mouth, swallowed back, this hangover ain't that bad.
