Here's a band that I got into a few years ago, and just started listening to again recently - Fuck the Facts. They're a great deathgrind band - here's a video for you.

I think I'm in love with Mel, the lead singer.

kimya dawson
Kimya Dawson.
KIMYA DAWSON!

She did a large portion of the Juno soundtrack, and that is how I found her. And she is amazing. Her voice is less than perfect, but thats her charm. Her lyrics are intensely personal and powerful. I suggest the album Remember That I Love You. It's my favorite.

Seriously, check her out. You'll thank me (hopefully).
I sing anyway.

I don't know if they were well known or not, but Man... Or Astroman are a great band. They do surf rock, with Sci-Fi twists and assorted soundbytes. Really hard to put it in a genre.

If I say that this is left purposely blank, then the statement contradicts the reality, which is that the sig space was not left blank, but had the words 'This space left purposely blank' in it.

I don't know if they've been mentioned but maybe check out Hella. I don't think they are that well known and they are still pretty good. Umm, The Protomen are kick ass, especially for Megaman fans. Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer is a solid power pop/pop punk group. Ooh- my friends band Spacemen of the Planet Echo. Its weird talking about them because they actually sound like a band.

I'd like to mention Monoral. I'm not quite sure if they are unknown, but at least they haven't been mentioned on this forum according to the search function.

One song I like: tuesday

They also made the intro for the anime Ergo proxy, the song is called kiri

Another band that I've really gotten into lately would be Galneryus - a great power metal band from Japan. Here's a couple videos -

New Legend, by Galneryus
In the Cage, by Galneryus

and lastly, IOSYS.

The best. Ever (and a way too unknown/appreciated)
Mr. Doctor is the composer, and Devil Doll the bandname.

Strange voice, orchestra, wonderful instrumental, wonderful vocals (you've never heard anything like it). i don't really now how to label it, simply because it's so different from everything else.
The Metal Archieves says; "Theatrical / Symphonic / Progressive with Rock and Metal Elements", but, just listen.

Edit: It's not THAT unknown really, but... Amazing. Whenever I can spread som Devil Doll love, I'll do it.

Bogdan Raczynski

If you like Aphex Twin then this guy should be checked out. He toured with Aphex and is similar-but-different. Think baby voices over syncopated beats with complex movements. The album 'Samurai Math Beats' is a good place to start.

Well, reading over this thread, a lot of the bands I was going to say have ironically already been mentioned. XD;

Xiu Xiu was mentioned, coming out with a new album (!!!) saw them live in Minneapolis, second best concert ever
As was Of Montreal, also should be coming out with a new album, saw them live in Minneapolis, first best concert ever
And The Pillows, ALMOST went to a New Year's Eve concert where they did the countdown but COULDN'T GO. :C

Anyway...
Casiotone For the Painfully Alone is excellent, kind of emo, but good and quirky, kind like a more melodic Xiu Xiu
Venetian Snares for spastic hardcore
Pink Martini for kind of loungey, multi-lingual music
Super Furry Animals for calm rock
Rose Kemp for beautiful and sad vocals
Haggard for renaissance themed epic heavy metal
Akira Yamaoka for house/techno, did music for the video game Beatmania
The Avalanches for sound clips made into music
cLOUDDEAD for rap that's not really rap (i.e. good lyrical content and no heavy bass) I am in love with the song Dead Dogs Two
Better Than Ezra (do they count as obscure?) Late 90's band that no one seemed to listen to.
Glassjaw for kind of screamo
Head Automatica for Glassjaw (same singer) but without screamo
Loney, Dear for swedish upbeat acoustic music
The Dissociatives for calm almost haunting music

Sorry if I listed some non-obscure bands, I'm out of touch with the popular music world to be frank.

Lucky Boys Confusion!

Although they do have a song in a comercial now, I have yet to meet anyone who's heard of them. Concerts are interesting because the opening acts will be local bands that all have a somewhat cultish following, so the audience is broken up into which band they're there for. Only a small portion are actually there for LBC, which is different from other concerts where most people just tolerate the opening bands and are really there for the headliners.

I get to be the one to say this:

Gåte. Okay, so theyre well-known in Norway (and possibly Russia and Japan, who knows), but other than that I think they're fairly off the scene. Even moreso now that their amazing lead singer decided to go and be normal.

Also, i'm amazed at what you people call "obscure" Of Montreal? Animal Collective? I'd have to ask 100 people at my school to find one person who doesn't know both.

Caveat: I work at Newbury Comics in the Warehouse, so I have a near encyclopedic knowledge of band names. I most likely have not heard [insert band], but i can name you their albums.

- the keys project from germany. Great band. They call themselve "acoustic fusion". Sound's a bit like Chick Coreas Acoustic Band
- Panzerballett from Munich, veeery strange mixture of jazz, funk and metal with lots of distortion and saxophone on top ^^
- Psyopus, just stumbled over them a few days ago. Very strange stuff, sounds like pure chaos but extreeemly virtuos instrumental playing
