The Codetalkers are pretty great. They are a jazz-fusion band. Live stuff can be found http://www.archive.org/details/TheCodetalkers

The Odd Couple. Some friends of mine that play cool arrangements of odd tunes. Like The Simpsons Theme. And the wedding theme from The Godfather. Also, anyone in Ireland or the UK should recognise most of the Sporting Medley Tunes...

God, reading some of this made me realise how much of a music snob I am =D

Psyclon Nine = Awesome cool Industrial/Black Metal band, their new album, Crwn Thy Frnicatr, is probably their best so far.
Beyond The Grave = Balls out metal from my area, on the brink of making it. Real nice guys too!
Boltdown = See above. The Newcastle metal scene is, hopefully, gonna explode soon, there's some real good bands here.

I'll post some other bands later, Joe gotta sleep damnit.

Bands that didn't quite make the cut? There is plenty of AWESOME music out there that few have heard of. For instance:

Focus - Anyone who's heard of them will get a great big hug from me. And cake. No, I'm not lying why would I lie?
Seriously, they're funny as hell, but still awesome. The musics greats, especially Hocus Pocus. All on Youtube, of course.

Autograph - Granted, they're not a complete flop, but for songs like Nineteen and Nonstop, Crazy World, Turn Up The Radio, I'm surprised they didn't make it.

Oh. My. God. I was reading through this thread wondering if Gentle Giant would be posted. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE HEARD OF GENTLE GIANT IN ONE PLACE EVER. It also doesn't help that I'm 22, and there's not much of a prog rock following around here.

I love you all. I love you all so very very much.

Edit: Also, reading through, there are a bunch of obscure named I recognize, but I know I'll miss some if I try to list all the ones I catch....like the Pillows and the Seatbelts. Lots of anime fans will know those names! Ahhh, Liquid Tension Experiment and Electric Light Orchestra....good stuff, that! Porcupine Tree is also <3.

And also some of the smaller metal/rock bands...Nonpoint I'm pretty sure I've seen live, I know I have a demo cd of American Head Charge around here somewhere...

As for names I haven't seen mentioned:
The Scooters (please please someone have heard of this one...I'm trying to track down their other CD without having to import it!)
Mike Keneally and Beer for Dolphins
and a finalist for 'Best band name ever' in my music collection: Screaming Headless Torsos

Don't know if someone has already mentioned these guys (because some people have very limited time to read these entries ¬¬"); will give it a try and you can yell at me if indeed they have been mentioned:

The Polish Ambassador - electronica/experimental, pretty good, must say I was not expecting the beats to be so dancy
Architecture in Helsinki - I know they are known, but not by enough people; also electronica, very funny, and experimental to a certain degree
Cansei de Ser Sexy - also known, but not by enough people; brazilian band that turns out some seriously good tune which has been classified as electronica alternative (by http://www.last.fm - if you love music you should get to this website.)
The Knife - Swedish deliciouness - there's no other way to express my love for this not-too-well-known band.

I love The Knife. The video for 'We Share Our Mothers Health' is fantastic.

If anyone knows of these bands, please say so, as I have no-one to talk about them with!

White Rabbits - Pure sexellence. Catchy songs driven by a samba/tango-esque beats.

Tunng - I hate to use silly genre terms, but 'Folktronica' at it's best. Lovely, simple singing with some strange samples and mixing thrown in.

Psapp - Similar to the above but a lot more complicated in production. Also, they're obsessed with cats, which is always a good thing.

Modeselektor - Calculating, funky, electronic hip-hop? Yes please!

Fiery Furnaces - This is a bit of a bad example of a band no one has heard of, but if you know not of their stuff, I suggest a listen to 'Widow City'. Avant Garde yet melodic, which is a bit tricky to achieve. Except for The Books , who also buck this trend.

I'm sure I saw them at Reading in 2004. Brother and sister or something? Certainly a duo.

Two entirely different bands...

Laura Veirs and the Salt Breakers
Listed as alternative/indie/folk rock. I guess you could call her a modern hippie, constantly sings about nature without all the "mother earth" crap (pardon if that offends anyone). I saw a show of theirs recently, opened by a band called Lake. I think they (Lake) might have been mentioned earlier in this thread. Laura Veirs and the Salt Breakers is a much more polished, mature version of Lake. You can catch some of their newer songs on their myspace at http://www.myspace.com/lauraveirs

The Coffin Draggers
They call themselves goth rock/psychobilly/punk. Very good for those of you with a sense of humor who don't mind their songs featuring how to romance, steal, or seduce dead girls. Very awesome live show. You can catch a clip of them here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y_c8FQzrshg
I've been sent to give you a singing mammogram.

I've only met three people who had heard of Harry Nilsson before I told them about him... it makes me sad. He was amazing! I know there are probably a lot of people who know about him. But, alas, a lot of people only know him for the coconut song. It wasn't even his best.

Here's a band I almost guarentee that no-one has heard of:
Since I Was A Little Girl (MySpace page)

They're acoustic, slightly electronic, and very soothing yet very weird to listen to. It's such a shame that one half of the duo died in a car accident :(

GG FOR LYF YO. One of my favorite bands.
Also their official site is great.

Have you ever hear of Premiata Forneria Marconi? (PFM for short)
They're an italian prog band similar in some things to GG, but nothing like them (does that make sense?). I reccomend their first two albums. They're liquid umph.

Gangpol und Mit - Glitchy bubblegum electronic music for the ADD crowd
Parenthetical Girls - Sparse rhythms and unusual instrumentation back up some of the saddest songs I've ever heard
Major Organ & the Adding Machine - Experimental psychedelic musique-concrete pop music, supposedly featuring members of Neutral Milk Hotel & Of Montreal
Raccoo-oo-oon - Primitive psychedelic noise-rock jams
The Dudley Corporation - Indie rock notable for its wide dynamic variation and interesting rhythms
Magenta Skycode - New-new-wave from Finland, with touches of Sigur Ros, Interpol, & the Killers

So, where can I cash in my scenester points?

I'd like to add Gary Moore, as well. I doubt that he's really that unheard of (played with some of the greats like BB King, Albert King, Van Halen I believe, etc.), but never really got popular beyond Europe.

Actually, he's not so much a favorite of mine as much as an interest. Quite talented, but his originality/creativity is questionable at times. Metal gets typical sometimes, and his blues gets repetitive too. But when he's good, he's good.

Here are some great tunes:
- Over the Hills and Far Away
- Shapes of Things
- Story of the Blues
- The Supernatural
- Wild Frontier
- The Loner
- Only Fool in Town
- Empty Rooms

31knots

Image

That picture kind of sums them up well. They're an indie-prog-math group who play with the intensity of a metal band. Aggressive, articulate, instrumental-focused rock with fantastic vocal and instrumental melodies. -always- in a minor key. quizzical harmonies. sparse textures, tight-as-hell compositions. I'm obviously a huge fanboy and I'd be very happy if you checked them out and even reported back to us with reactions.
