5 Songs/5 Emotions

Postby Cai » Sat Oct 20, 2007 2:29 am UTC

My recent psychology assignment was to pick five different songs that make you feel five different emotions or feelings. What would you guys do? My presentation/video for the class is here <-- link.

My emotions:
Lightning Bolt - Captain Caveman [Anxious]
Animal Collective - Peacebone [Happy]
Mastodon - Blood And Thunder [Angry]
Modest Mouse - Trucker's Atlas [Isolated]
Boards of Canada - An Eagle In Your Mind [Sleepy]
Dreamers never live, only dream of it.

Oooooh, fun. However I'm appallingly poor when it comes to identifying my emotions, and most of the songs that have a major effect on me tend to come under one general emotive heading, but I'll have a look through my library and try.

Heartbroken - PJ Harvey : Horses in my Dreams
Melancholic - All Angels Gone : The Silent Ballet
Sleepy - Slowdive : Avalyn I
Uplifted - Band of Horses : The Funeral
Lonely - Diane Cluck : Easy to be Around
Regretful - The National : Baby, We'll be Fine
Sensual - Alpha : A Perfect End
Unnerved - Massive Attack : Angel

I'm not sure if it's the songs themselves, though, or what they represent to me. Ah I shouldn't be in here....

These are the ones that spring to mind:

Kasabian - Club Foot [Badass]
Boards Of Canada - Peacock Tail [Peaceful/Relaxed]
Josh Ritter - Wings [Longing/Sadness]
The Cat Empire - Miserere [Uplifted/Inspired]
Everything is Alright - Four Tet [what the song title says]

Those are a few, but there are some I want to put down that don't have any singly identifiable emotion, but still touch me quite strongly. Songs like "The River" by Bruce Springsteen, and "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" by Gorillaz. I dunno, I think it's a cool idea, but there are limitations, and as CaraInFrames said, we each bring our personal viewpoint to the songs we choose. I guess that's why it was a psychology topic...
Go, said the bird, for the leaves were full of children,
Hidden excitedly, containing laughter.
Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind
Cannot bear very much reality.

I'm not sure if they are different emotions...

Godspeed - Antennas to heaven... (vaguely angry/sad)
Pavement - Strings of Nashville (sad/ nostalgic)
Breeders - Do you love me now? (horny)
Pixies - Debaser (summery- is that an emotion? also happy, I guess)
Mogwai - Cody (borderline suicidal)

oh, and I don't know how Radiohead - All I need makes me feel, but it is a good song.
I don't sing, I just shout. All. On. One. Note.

(Energetic/Happy) Symphony of Destruction- Megadeth

(Angry) Walk with me in Hell- Lamb of God

Post-apocalyptic hopefulness: Regina spektor - on the radio

Wait, that just makes me think of 'Dr Bloodmoney' by Philip K Dick (More for the atmosphere than the plot).

Mr E's point stands. Somebody loves me!

Anyway, I just now decided to go ahead and explain them all. For giggles.

[Rage] Gwar - Biledriver

Opening lyrics are
GWAR wrote:All creatures born are born to die but before then survive ; Some creatures born they never live but still they are alive
Upon a bony steed I sway, my scythe above the herd ; I want to murder everyone in the entire world
and then it continues on, throwing in a quick explanation as to how the old are weak and filthy, the young are stupid, and everyone else is obscene.

[Resignation] Fugazi - Waiting Room

This one's also easy. Lyrics aside, it's pretty much delivered by a guy who's .. given up isn't the right phrase.. more of come to terms with everything... resigned to whatever awaits ahead. Like a good sense of resignation, there's a sadness, sure, but there's an undercurrent of joy that he's come to terms with whatever.

[Regret] Kittie - What I've Always Wanted

Pretty much the whole line of "Hey, what's the worst thing that could happen to someone? That they get exactly what they want." in a song. Sometimes screamed, as it's a metal band.

[Anticipation] Placebo - Special K

Back in the day... well, I can't really say I've done my share of drugs, as compared to my peers I've not done much, but compared to lots of folks I've done quite a bit... so we'll just leave it that I'm experienced enough with a wide enough variety of chemical alterants and leave it at that. Point being, after you've taken something you've done before, I always got a sensation of anticipation right as it was starting to kick in. It's also really close to the same sensation I get when I and someone else are starting to get in to it romantically... both include a sensation of wanting to hurry up and get to it already while at the same time wanting to prolong the buildup as long as possible.... ie - anticipation. This song builds that sensation up and goes with it, luckily at the end there's enough of a release that it's a nice feeling, rather than a tease. And that's the best I can explain it. Snoogans.

[Peace]Eels - Somebody Loves You

Peace may not even be the right word.. transcendence? Unity with the World-Consciousness? Reassurance that everything's going to work out okay because a bearded guy with sunglasses is telling me it's going to and, hey, why not believe the dude? Something like that.

Adding to it...

[???] Dead Milkmen - Tugena

What's that emotion for when you're 15-17 and you know that life's going to get better eventually and though you're pretty much alone right now you're wondering who you'll settle down with, if you'll settle down, and you're concerned about sex but not really and you're mostly concerned with being concerned about it because it seems everyone else is as well as seeing it in all kinds of television and songs and stuff but mostly you're just wondering what the hell kind of person you're going to be, and you know you're not a kid anymore by far; you know you're right smack in the middle of being a teenager but you really don't feel all that different than what you did when you were 10 and you remember that being 10 didn't feel that different from being 7, and you start to wonder if maybe you're fucked up in the head or something, but then you realize.. mostly by watching crap like the Wonder Years, that pretty much every person on the planet who's been 15-17 has gone through something similar enough to this and it's all part of growing up and being an adult and you'll figure it out eventually, but you're wondering why it hasn't started yet, or maybe it has and this is the gateway to it and the only way you can even describe it is with a massive run-on sentence?

Because that instrumental to this day still makes me feel like that. Probably because I listened to it first when I was 15, and fairly frequently over the next two years or so. Interestingly enough, no other Dead Milkmen song does that to me.

[Delirium]Lords of Acid - Lucy's Fucking Sky

Probably has a lot to do with the fact that the first time I heard this song I was on.. I think hour 60 or so of LAN gaming and software/music piracy, and I was pretty much having some auditory hallucinations at that point. Even though I know those sounds aren't there in the song, I still sometimes hear them when I listen to this song.

My god. I am going to find this track simply because of your description. I think that diatribe takes the word 'adolescent' and stretches it to its angsty, hormonal, evolutionary archetype. Well put, ST.

Also, I mispelled it.. as always.. it's Tugena. I don't know why I always want to put an extra N in there.

Christmassy: Sixpence None The Richer - It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
Wanting to Laugh: Steven Colbert - Singin' In Korean

Smashing Pumpkins - Today ?

I don't think killing all the flies is suicidal - by implication of the back cover, anyone listening to it should be happy!

Oh, and even if it is, Cody is way more suicidal.

no-genius, I don't mean suicidal in itself, but the effect the music has on me. I have plenty of songs that actually either directly reference ending one's own life, or make allusions to such, but if I were to pick one to score my own self made demise, I think it would be Killing All the Flies.

Yeah, I guess. Actually, 'Sleep' or '...Antennas to Heaven' could make me fairly suicidal. They are just such sad songs!

It's ok I wasn't using my civil liberties anyhow...

1. Still Fly (Cover) by The Devil Wears Prada - I can listen to this song at any time and enjoy it no matter how I feel.
2. Dressed For Friend Requests by Drop Dead Gorgeous - Sad/Suicidal/Depressed all at once.
3. Forever by As I Lay Dying - Heartbroken. Simple.
4. Loss Of Me from the Final Fantasy IX soundtrack - I know it sounds dorky, but this song is so powerful.

Anyways, Tired or Heartbroken (again)
5. Swing (Cover) by Miss May I - When I feel like I want to be in a band/scream the SHIT out of anything.
I hope someone knows what I'm talking about.
I probably sound crazy.
Life fears death, but lives only to die.
The only cure for this fear is total destruction.
In a world of nothing, fear does not exist.
This is the world that all life desires.

[Happiness] Swing Life Away by Rise Against
[Panic] Hospital by The Used
[Anger] Radio by Alkaline Trio (though it's rather passive anger)
[Love] Always by Blink-182
[Boredom] pretty much anything by Green Day

Heir Apparent - Opeth

Gives me a feeling that's kind of angry, but also this feeling of incredible awesomeness, and really energetic. The kind of mood that makes you say "FUCK YEAH".

Windowpane - Opeth

Calm, kind of removed, kind of sleepy, and content.

Rat Race - The Specials

Sarcastic, happy, energetic.

Red, Red Wine - Tony Tribe (cover)

Sort of sad, wishful.

Such Great Heights - Postal Service or Iron and Wine

Really nostalgic, reminds me of my first girlfriend.

Why the Dickens didn't I post in this thread earlier? And no, I can not keep to five emotions.

[Happiness Akin to a Toddler Hyper on Lemonade] Guillemots - Trains To Brazil
[Nostalgia] Pixies - Is She Weird?
[Pure Lustful, Fiery Passion] Death From Above 1979- Romantic Rights
[Sadness] Elliot Smith - Between The Bars
[In Love] Badly Drawn Boy - How?
[Alienated and Lost] TV On The Radio - Staring At The Sun
[Restless] Nina Simone - Sinnerman
[Angry] Modest Mouse - Bury Me With It
[Lonely] PJ Harvey - The Devil
[Heartbroken] Bjork - Play Dead

I was actually just going to list a bunch of TV On The Radio songs, but decided not to.
i dare you to take me on...

"Some people need a red carpet rolled out in front of them in order to walk forward into friendship. They can't see the tiny outstretched hands all around them, everywhere, like leaves on trees."

Hells yeah, we should. Although, I believe that our combined music tastes are so awesome, it would either make our listeners ears explode or bring them to orgasm. Or both simultaenously.

Sad: Miserable at Best by Mayday Parade... or Hymn to the Sea by James Horner
Angry: Indestructible by Disturbed

Gah... that's all I can think of at the moment. I'll come back and edit this when I think of more.
