It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Two acoustic guitars (Takamine and Fender), an electric guitar (Fender), bass (Ibanez), a craptastically short synthesizer, and one beautiful violin. (The kids' tambourines, recorders, maracas, and kiddie piano don't really count, but they still contribute to the general "ambient" noise).

I can now add a pair of ocarinas to my list! One is plastic and shitty, but the other is ceramic and sexy. And I am going to learn to play it *well*.

And I can sing.

I own a clarinet, which I haven't played in like 5 years, and an acoustic guitar. The guitar I'm still learning, but hopefully I'll actually be able to teach myself one of these days because I really want to be able to play.

Piano (not technically mine, my parents bought it, but nobody else can play it)
Classical Guitar "Admira Ronda"
Electric Guitar "Yamaha Pacifica 012" (this thing is a pile of crap :s, but it does me fine)

That's about it, I've had a combination of mouth organs over my time, but never really learned to play them, and can't find any of them now. Piano's my main instrument, I play mainly classical (predominantly Chopin at the moment), I really need to start learning some Jazz stuff.

P.S. I also have a guitar hero explorer, does that count? :-p

Every house should own one of these, one of these, one of these, and a variant of one of these.

As for me, I have combined my cheap left-handed Strat with a didgeridoo and an ocarina to produce a literally ear-shattering sound. It kinda looks like a machination from a Rube-Goldberg machine, and it sounds like a singing goddess in a clapped-out Škoda.

Piece-of-crap tenor trombone (with an always-breaking F-attachment)
Piece-of-crap bass trombone (it's from the late 40's/early 50's, so it doesn't even have a second trigger... it also has really fuzzy middle G's for whatever reason)
Piece-of-crap euphonium
Decent baritone horn
2 Decent keyboards
Decent family-owned baby grand piano
Decent electric bass
A weird electric accordion thing that seems to be permanently out of tune.

I'm really lucky my high school band program knows how to fundraise, and therefor has some seriously nice horns. Huzzah for tax credits, no?

And I have a Buffet Bb Clarinet.

And a didgeridoo. 8)

...Oh.
And a 1967 Gibson SG Junior. (I just found out tonight that it was a junior!)

I was a professional trumpet player in another life. Then I got TMJ and I can't play anymore. I can barely eat a bagel these days. So I just have four wonderful trumpets (some more expensive than I'd care to admit pubically) sitting in the closet. and I haven't played in years. I particularly long for a Schilke Bb true medium bore I bought during my college years that I barely got to play before calling it quits. It had such amazing tone and clarity. I of course had the standard Bach Strat Bb as well along with a C and a pic I didn't play enough to deserve owning.

I also have a Martin OOO-18 from the 80s around that I really aught to play more but I end up playing 10x more guitar hero than actual guitar. It's a gift from my mother who is a guitarist by trade (well, an elementary school music teacher really but whatever).

The house I grew up in though was jam packed with well more than an orchestra. I am the only member of my family (mom, dad, older sister) who DOESN'T have a bachelors in music. Father was keyboard/banjo, mom was guitar/voice/harpsichord/keyboard, sister was flute/drums(yeah, really. Full set.) and I played a pretty mean trumpet.

It pains me to talk about it. I was talented enough and worked a great deal all through my childhood and even college on trumpet but had to quit nearly cold turkey. The family almost feels guilty talking about music around me now. I was always the talented one and I think it saddens them as much as me.

Since my whole family is into music you can pick up almost any instrument on a whim at our house. We have a trumpet, cornet, french horn, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboard, tenor sax, baritone sax, clarinet, trombone, two flutes, various levels of recorders, and a bunch of flute-ish instruments (pan pipe, ocarina and such).

Two trumpets (Yamaha, King)
Two ukuleles (one's a junker, the other's the real deal)
French horn (my dad's, but I play it--I think it's from the 50's?)
Steel drums (just about one and a half octaves)
recorder (from fourth grade)
Native American flute (in A minor, I think? possibly Dm)
conch shell

I also play piano, sing, and play vibraphone.

Instruments otherwise owned by my family:

upright piano
keyboard
several trombones (both my parents' man instrument)
$10 cornet held together with electrical tape, pipe fittings, and pull-ties
double-belled euphonium
learner's accordion
various kazoos (including a nose kazoo)
guitar
flute
glass flute
several different ocarinas
fife
tin whistles
lap dulcimers (there's some special name I can't remember)
hammer dulcimer
bugle
maybe a 1930's brass sousaphone?
I'm pretty sure we have a few standard euphs/baris kicking around, too.

instruments my grandparents have:

2 marching tubas, possibly contras?
trombone
piano
violin

My dad also has a garage full of his alumni band's instruments, which we can use pretty much whenever, so:
three or four fiberglass sousas
several marching snares
several marching bass drums
a few marching tenors

We're pretty much a hugely musical family, I'm pretty sure I've missed something here or there. I got my first uke when my parents bought me a junky violin that was so bad it didn't work. I really want to learn to play violin, though, so I can play my grandpa's.

As for the tromboon thing: putting a trumpet mouthpiece in a tuba mouthpiece in a tuba produces hilarious results.
HEEEEAAAAATHUUUUUUUS

If you need to get a hold of me I'd recomment just PMing me, as I come and go in phases, it seems.

a cheapo "corsair" bass--i don't even know what the hell that is, but it's a fender P-bass ripoff.

also, on friday, getting a fender J-bass.

Edit: we also have a guitar and a 107-year old upright piano that is out of key by a half step.. but in tune with itself (unless you go on the lowest four or so notes) that actually sounds really great. Also a cello a violin, 2 acoustic guitars, a trumpet (i think), a flute or two, and perhaps an electric guitar or two.
People in my family will randomly pick up or drop lessons and randomly buy or sell an old instrument, so it's oddly fluid...
uhhhh fuck.

Three trumpets:
Schilke B1 (my baby)
Bach Strad (good horn, but it's seen better days)
Olds Ambassador

One cornet (can't identify the brand--it's pretty old, though)

Two flutes:
Muramatsu EX model
Yamaha

One piccolo (Emerson)

Four guitars:
Fender Strat
Acoustic (can't remember the brand--my mom gave it to me to learn on when I was a kid)
(2) Guitar Hero controllers

One set of bagpipes

A collection of minor instruments like kazoos, recorders, fifes, and the like. I'm not even going to try to inventory those.

---edited to add: one Yamaha keyboard

That's not that special.

I had a copy of a Stradivarius and I like my current violin much, much better. It has a richer, darker tone and the high notes aren't as squeaky sounding.

So really, like any instrument, it just depends on the quality (of the copy, in this case).

4 flutes (two awful ones, one pretty awful one, and my baby, a muramatsu)
2 piccolos (one god awful one, one okay one)
1 clarinet (I'm so bad at this instrument it doesn't matter the quality of the instrument)
1 violin (would be the same as the above, except this doesn't hold its tuning, so you can actually tell)
2 soprano recorders (both crap. Really want a good alto one)
1 outdated MIDI
1 very old bassoon sans bocal
set of vocal chords

No.

Perhaps if Stradivarius was the first violin maker, you could get away with that. At best, all you can claim is the violins made since Stradivarius started making them.

I know, and agree, but for all the hype about Stradivarius, you could easily think he did invent the violin.
