Musical Phones (Merged : Interesting Ringtones)

Postby Chevon » Fri Feb 29, 2008 6:14 am UTC

What's the best music you've heard come out of a phone? Well, not necessarily best, but most suited?

I would have to say hearing the old school Zelda theme on a hold line for EB Games made my day.

Earlier today, I heard a Zelda sound effect come out of somebody's cell phone. It was amusing.

I use the music of first level in Doom as my ringtone. I think I have never even heard that anyone else would have any game sound as a rintone or messagesound. I think the best ringtone would be 4 by Aphex Twin, that song always cheers me up.

I once did a shitty remix of the music from Dimitri's Nightclub from Sly 2: Band of Thieves. One of my friends thought it would sound cool on a phone, and for whatever reason it's infinitely better coming from a phone speaker.

I have a nokia 1100, so I can make my own monophonic ringtones. :D

I had the katamari theme as my ringtone for quite a white (the version at the menu screen of the first one - the guy singing by himself), and the 'you made a new star!' sting makes the BEST message notification music ever! (wooooosh....DUN DA DUN!) At the moment, I've got the "Fruity Oaty Bars" song from Serenity, and looking for something new. Not sure what yet..... :)

I was in an English class focusing on women's roles in literature and someone's phone rang "Superman that Ho". I gave it points for situational humor, but none for style.

If I knew how to do it, I'd have this bit from Wake the Dead by Praxis.

*edit* I should say that I've looked in to it, and while it's theoretically possible for my phone to use mp3 ringtones, it's not a feature out of the box, and I've yet to see a walkthrough that was as simple as "Do A. Do B. Do C. Copy the mp3 in question. Do D. Profit!" Too much grey area in the phone world and I'm not so sure I want to screw around with it.. but I might relent and do it some day.

What kind of phone? I know I went through a LOT of trouble to figure out how to do mp3 ringtones on my RAZR, and if you have a similar model, I'd love to have that trouble help someone else as well :D

My old phone used to have the Metal Gear "!" noise as a message alert. The ringtone was "Snake? Snake?! SNAAAAAKE! *music!*"

Now my phone is monophonic, and my ringtone is the Power Rangers communicator beep.

Well, if this goes much farther, probably best to split it to a "Help me hack my phone plz!" thread. But it's a motorola v325i. Part of the problem might also be that I don't technically have a Phone to Computer cable. It's got a MiniUSB jack on the bottom, I figure "What's the difference?" and about half the time bitpim and my phone can communicate fine. The other half they can't, and pkcommander (a program supposedly written to edit motorola phones and nothing else) doesn't do a damned thing other than crash itself.

Main point being, I'm not really that concerned and more or less just provided the mp3 loop in case anyone else wanted it. Also, I recommend tracking that song down, as it's a goddamn awesome instrumental.

Yeah, a split at this point is prolly a good idea: but to upload mp3's, I ended up having to get the Motorola Phone Tools program. A regular usb to mini-usb cord should work fine. Also, some providers lock out features on their phones to try to get people to pay extra for them. >P

Interesting ringtones

Postby Quasar » Sun Apr 06, 2008 6:37 pm UTC

So, ringtones in general are the most irritating form of "music" known to man. But every so often you come across a real gem - one that makes you smile, one that's unique and special to you, one that you start to describe in vaguely erotic ways. What are the best examples, and what are you using at the moment?

To start us off, mine's the short, looping version of 'still alive' that gets played on all the little radios in Portal. You can find it in the GCF file somewhere.
Originality is overrated.

I just recently heard a ringtone that came with the phone of the person waiting behind me in line for a restroom stall at Barnes & Noble. It didn't have a title, but it was, down to a note and with all scoring intact, THE THEME MUSIC FROM OVERDRAWN AT THE MEMORY BANK. You know. The one starring Raul Julia, produced for PBS and justly savaged by Mike/Deep 13-era MST3K?

I just stood there, trying not to laugh, as laughter would have made my bladder leak.

But seriously, hooray for whatever compu-person decided it would be cool to actually try a new song and not just stuff the phone with the same public-domain MIDIs all the other phones have.

My ringtone is Charles Ives's song "1,2,3".

"Why doesn't one, two, three seem to appeal to a Yankee as much as one, two!"

It's possibly the best song ever.

Are you my team leader? 'Cause he has that exact same ringtone (although his is very rarely on silent). At least it's a decent song, and much less annoying than the monophonic Nokia ringtone that the guy in the cubicle next to me has, and never answers because he has his earphones in and music up so loud that he can't hear it...

I have a very outdated (5 years old or more) mobile, something like a Nokia GZ72350iT, just when they brought in basic camera-phone functionality and ringtones that were any more than monotonic beeps. The ringtone of choice for me of the many downloads that were left on it when I inherited it is "All the small things" by Blink 182. However it just does a vague beeping/guitar riff of part of the refrain section. Someday I might get something proper and shove an mp3 of mine on it.

Though I do have special ringtones set up for people likely to call me - my brother's is a rock remix of the Pokemon GSC Rival battle music, and my roommate is "Ace of Spades".
