the most depressing song: help me find it!

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

I have no idea who performs it or if its been said yet ... but the song is called
"how to save a life"

also
"iris" - Goo Goo Dolls.

EDIT:

also .. although it doesn't sound it.... if you listen to the lyrics of the song "Almost Easy" by Avenged Sevenfold.... its really quite depressing.

"Is That All There Is" can be depressing, more in a "what's the point of it all", apathetic kind of way than a tragic, crying kind of way. Peggy Lee or PJ Harvey. Couldn't find a youtube video that wasn't stupid.

Heh.

On another note, I've been spending a lot of time listening to Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin per ParanoidAndroid's recommendation in this thread, and. . . damn. He even makes sex depressing.

Wow, he is good. I get a very strong Leonard Cohen vibe from him, and he's one of the better artists I've heard to pull off that sound.

I don't know if it's been said yet, but "Fish and Bird" by Tom Waits is gut-wrenchingly depressing.

That cover was incredible, like almost everything Bazan has done. He gets bonus points for actually covering the Leonard Cohen version of the song. Jeff Buckley omits a few verses that I really like.

Yeah, I'd never heard several of those verses until I listened to the Bazan cover. Apparently Cohen went through something like 15 verses over the lifetime of that song, so I suppose there's quite a bit of picking and choosing to be done by anybody who's going to perform it.

Arab Strap can be pretty depressing. Their subject matter mostly consists of failed relationships, meaningless and unfulfilling sex, and unfaithfulness. There's some hint of dark humor there, but it still comes off as brutally honest. Extremely rarely is there a glimmer of hope in an Arab Strap song, and when there is, it's still bittersweet. Try the album Philophobia.

I'm pretty well-filled with depressing music, so I'll probably be back here again.

I will reiterate what I last said:
Symphony No. 3 by Henryk Górecki. Believe me on this one.

I would almost say that they're the definition of depressing music, but that's always a matter of opinion

The Lighthouse's Tale by Nickel Creek.
youtube video. ignore the screaming fans

lyrics spoiled
Spoiler:
I am a lighthouse, worn by the weather and the waves.
I keep my lamp lit, to warn the sailors on their way.

I'll tell a story, paint you a picture from my past.
I was so happy, but joy in this life seldom lasts.

I had a keeper, he helped me warn the ships at sea.
We had grown closer, 'till his joy meant everything to me.

And he was to marry, a girl who shone with beauty and light.
And they loved each other, and with me watched the sunsets into night.

[Chorus:]
And the waves crashing around me, the sand slips out to sea.
And the winds that blow remind me, of what has been, and what can never be.

She'd had to leave us, my keeper he prayed for a safe return.
But when the night came, the weather to a raging storm had turned.

He watched her ship fight, but in vain against the wild and terrible wind.
In me so helpless, as dashed against the rock she met her end.

[Chorus]

Then on the next day, my keeper found her washed up on the shore.
He kissed her cold face, that they'd be together soon he swore.

I saw him crying, watched as he buried her in the sand.
And then he climbed my tower, and off of the edge of me he ran.

[Chorus]

I am a lighthouse, worn by the weather and the waves.
And though I am empty, I still warn the sailors on their way.

Love You More Than Life and Communist Daughter by Neutral Milk Hotel both feel so sad to me. I can hardly listen to the latter more than a few times in a row even though it is under two minutes, it just has this heavy, mournful essence.

Some other songs I find sad:

Styrofoam-Daniel Powter "I don't ever feel warm..."

Fireworks-Embrace "I wont need convincing, I've seen enough to want to try and change things, you fell in love, I fell in life..."

Pale Blue Eyes-The Velvet Underground "linger on, your pale blue eyes..."

Consequence-The Notwist "leave me hypnotized, love..."

She Wants To Play Hearts-Ryan Adams "she only comes to me when it's raining outside..."

I find "first day of my life" by Bright eyes really depressing personally.

It's just one of those songs that is meant to be happy but somewhere along the way becomes depressingly happy.

Carnival by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis does it for me. It's a (short) instrumental song from the soundtrack of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

That song never bothered me until my bf's dad died, and I never got to say goodbye or I love him. I can't listen to that song.

Most depressing song: You can let go now, Daddy....by Crystal Shawanda. My eyes started tearing up as I was copy+pasting. Lyrics:
Spoiler:
Wind blowin' on my face
Sidewalk flyin' beneath my bike
A five year-old's first taste
Of what freedom's really like
He was runnin' right beside me
His hand holdin' on the seat
I took a deep breath and hollered
As I headed for the street

Chorus
You can let go now, Daddy
You can let go
Oh, I think I'm ready
To do this on my own
It still feels a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I'll be okay now, Daddy
You can let go

I was standin' at the altar
Between the two loves of my life
To one I've been a daughter
To one I soon would be a wife
When the preacher asked,
'Who gives this woman?'
Daddy's eyes filled up with tears
He kept holdin' tightly to my arm
'Til I whispered in his ear

You can let go now, Daddy
You can let go
Oh, I think I'm ready
To do this on my own
It still feels a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I'll be okay now, Daddy
You can let go

It was killin' me to see
The strongest man I ever knew
Wastin' away to nothin'
In that hospital room
'You know he's only hangin' on for you'
That's what the night nurse said
My voice and heart were breakin'
As I crawled up in his bed, and said

You can let go now, Daddy
You can let go
Your little girl is ready
To do this on my own
It's gonna be a little bit scary
But I want you to know
I'll be okay now, Daddy
You can let go
You can let go

The worst part is when she sings the last chorus, you can almost hear her choking up. I wanted to die =[
Life is beautiful.

Recently, I've found quite a bit of sadness in Brian McBride's When the Detail Lost Its Freedom. He's one half of the ambient band Stars of the Lid, who are pretty nice.

About the album, it is said:
When the Detail Lost its Freedom is a recording that sheds light on the notion of "picking up the pieces and moving on." It is a record of Brian McBride "getting it out" in the midst of some overwhelming situations, a recording made during a move from Chicago to Los Angeles. The strong emotions the recording sessions tried to channel do bring a sense of awkwardness here that made it through to the finished product. As McBride describes the recording process: "In retrospect, it probably has to do with some of my weaker moments. Which is all fancy code for: it was therapy during a divorce and a move to a city which thrives on sucking the life of out people¹s souls."

Knowing that much, a certain layer is added to the album that is impossible to escape. Then once you get around to songs like "Our Last Moment In Song," which features who I assume—possibly wrongfully so, though it makes sense—to be his ex-wife, it becomes kind of hard to listen to. But it is very good.
Hi, love!

Rockstar by Nickelback is one of the most depressing songs I've ever heard. It depresses me that unoriginal turgid bullshit like that can be mistaken for rock.

Aside from stuff that's already been mentioned, and the obligatory Leonard Cohen (my vote would be for Stranger Song as his greatest downer):

Man of the World - Fleetwood Mac (from the Peter Green days)
Old Compton Street Blues - Al Stewart

and then, if I delve into the Dark Side of my music collection (aka "the folk section"):

Molly Metcalfe - Jake Thackray
Vulcan & Lucifer/Steelos - John Tams
Old Man's Song - Noel Murphy

I remember first hearing that song (after having not slept for a while) and thinking, "Illuminate the nose on their vacancy signs? What the fuck does that mean?"

Gonna go ahead and nominate Parenthetical Girls - I Was the Dancer (or any other song from that album) for this thread. Don't bother looking it up on Youtube, all the videos are crap. But, wow. I get chills every time.

Um, not sure if anyone's mentioned this before (probably), but Porcupine Tree - My Ashes.

Lyrics:
Spoiler:
All the things that I needed
And wasted my chances
I have found myself wanting
When my mother and father
Gave me their problems
I accepted them all
Nothing ever expected
I was rejected
But I came back for more

And my ashes drift beneath the silver sky
Where a boy rides on a bike but never smiles
And my ashes fall on all the things we said
On a box of photographs under the bed

I will stay in my own world
Under the covers
I will feel safe inside
A kiss that will burn me
And cure me of dreaming
I was always returning

And my ashes find a way beyond the fog
And return to save the child that I forgot
And my ashes fade among the things unseen
And a dream plays in reverse on piano keys
And my ashes drop upon a park in Wales
Never ending clouds of rain and distant sails

If we're talking Death Cab, may I humbly suggest 'What Sarah Said'
Spoiler:
And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU that reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak on the LCD took you a little farther away from me
Away from me

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines in a place where we only say goodbye
It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds
But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the TV entertained itself

'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous pacers bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round and everyone will lift their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said that "Love is watching someone die"

So who's going to watch you die?..

Win. I had forgotten he stuck those two together, though I think I mentioned the latter in my first post on here. Eesh.

Also, I always thought "What Sarah Said" was a bit contrived and melodramatic. Just my thoughts.

:( Why did I have to click this topic...?

Anyway, a few good examples of horribly depressing music:

Porcupine Tree - Stop Swimming
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HFduDo-nvo
Basically about Steve Wilson's frustration with the music industry, and wishing just to give it all up.

Still, that's not the most depressing PT has to offer
A Smart Kid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lozHL7w27m4
What its about
Spoiler:
The last human left on earth after nuclear war...visited by aliens, and then left absolutely alone. I love the album, but it gets me down every time that song comes on.

Still, I have to say that "Heartattack in a Layby" is the most depressing PT song, and one of the most depressing I've ever heard

Spoiler:
She..waits...for...me... gets me choked up every time. Every damn time.

Also, kudos to whomever suggested My Ashes. Pretty much all of Fear of a Blank Planet is depressing in one way or another. Which reminds me, Opeth - Damnation is one of the most depressing albums I've heard. Its not the usual death metal they play (no harsh vocals whatsoever), but its one of my favorite albums. As mentioned before, Pearl Jam - Black is such a sad song. But everyone who mentioned Radiohead forgot their saddest song: Street Spirit.

The video doesn't seem to fit in my opinion, but there's such emotion in Yorke's voice when he sings it.

Yes, I know Staind isn't the greatest band out there, but they did have some extremely depressing music.
Home is an excellent example of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zpyE1pqzIQ

My personal favorite depressing song: Dream Theater - Space Dye Vest.
Its the last song their keyboardist, Kevin Moore, did with them. Although its not him on vocals, the emotion comes through.

However, in my opinion, the most depressing song is A Silver Mt Zion - God Bless Our Dead Marines. The beginning isn't really sad, but the end is incredibly moving. The last line is perfect.
